Jackson Guice

Under the heading of "the wrong people keep dying", I learned last week of the passing of comic book artist Jackson "Butch" Guice at the age of 63.

Guice came to prominence as an artist during my peak comic book buying years in the 1980's and '90's.

I mostly followed Guice's work on Superman where he was the penciller for Action Comics.

Below is the cover of Action Comics#700 which was a super sized knock down drag out battle between Superman and Lex Luthor.

My first regular exposure to Guice's artwork was when he moved over from Marvel to DC to for the post-Crisis relaunch of The Flash.

Guice made his debut as an artist at Marvel pencilling a run of Micronauts by writer Bill Mantlo. He would also draw Iron Man, Doctor Strange and the X-Men title X-Factor.

His time at DC drawing Action Comics coincided with legendary storylines  Death of Superman, Funeral for a Friend and  Reign of the Supermen.

Guice produced what a lot of comic critics consider the best work of his career on the creator owned Ruse with Mark Waid, Mike Perkins, and Laura Martin, which earned Guice a nomination for an Eisner for Best Art Team.

For me, Jackson Guice produced a really great looking Superman, lithe but muscular and with a really cool cape.

Jackson Guice was a man of considerable talent and it's a shame that he died too soon at age 63.

Rest in peace.

Also a brief word to acknowledge the loss of Daffodil the cat who I wrote about here.

It turns out Daffodil or Daffy for short was a boy cat, not a girl and was a bit older than originally assumed.  And in poor health.

Sadly Daffy passed away. My condolences to our son Dean and his friend Janna who grew close to this cat who decided he wanted to live with them.

Daffy was part of the family for too short a time and will be missed.
