Tuesday TV Touchbase: Night Court and Ghosts (And Other Stuff)

Last week's season finale of Night Court pulled a Star Wars: The Force Awakens on us.

You know how SWTFA made a big deal of a quest for Luke Skywalker and we get to a craggy faced Mark Hammil standing on a craggy cliffside and... it ends!

So...

Last week's Night Court made a big deal that Melissa Rauch's Big Bang Theory co-star Simon Helberg would be a special guest star.  There was even a "special guest star Simon Helberg" opening credit.

The bulk of the episode concerns the reconcilation of Judge Abby Stone and her boyfriend Jay.  Jay is planning to surprise Abby by proposing to her.  By the end of the episode, Abby has gotten wind of Jay's plan and is excited about it. In her office, Abby turns to face who she expects is Jay about to propose and instead it's Simon Helberg.

There is literally less than a minute of episode to go.

Abby's face goes stern as she exclaims, "What the fuck are you doing here?"

This is on NBC so yes, Abby was censored.  "What the fuck are (BLEEP!) doing here?"

Oops! Let's try that again.

"What the (BEEP!) are you doing here?"

Simon's character steps forward, taking Abby's head in his hands and plants a big damn kiss.

Jay and Dan Fielding enter the judge's chambers and demand to know who is this guy.

Our visitor holds up a hand with a gold wedding band and says "I'm Spencer and I'm Abby's husband!"

And we get a "To Be Continued" graphic and we are out.

And the answers to our questions will have to wait until season 4.

Or as the case may be, never.

Three days after the season finale of Night Court, NBC announced the series would not be renewed for a season 4.

On one hand, I would say thank you NBC for putting us out of our misery. This incarnation of Night Court struck out more than it hit and as much as I hate to say it, the major weakness was the character at the core, Melissa Rauch's Abby Stone.  Yeah, her dad Harry Stone in the original series was a fount of positivity but that was laced with displays of occasional grim seriousness. Abby was unrelentingly light with few if any glimpses of any darkness. So NBC has spared us more of that.

However...

On the other hand, we will never know the answer to when was Abby Stone married to this guy?

Not cool, NBC! Not cool!

In a completely unexpected development, NBC did renew for 2nd season Brilliant Minds, the medical drama Andrea and I followed last year.

I'm glad to hear the show is coming back but I would've bet real money that NBC was going to cancel this series.

Ghosts ended it's 4th season with fore knowledge of it's renewal for season 5.  We got some changes to the status quo with ghosts Peter and Alberta sharing a big damn kiss.

And we got the return of Elias Woodstone.

Hetty's robber Baron husband is unleashed from Hell with the ability to attain human form and a mission to secure a soul to take his place in Hell.

And the soul is has obtained belongs to Jay, Sam's husband. And Hell is not willing to wait for Jay to die of natural causes to collect.

Sam and Jay are the current living owners of Woodstone Manor and Sam can see the ghosts who dwell there but Jay cannot. Which can be a source of frustration for the guy with his wife carrying on conversations and getting caught up in shenanigans with spirits he cannot see or hear.

And now an emissary from Hell has his soul and is actively trying to kill him to collect?

We've got a lot to resolve here but at least we know there will be a season 5 of Ghosts to explore what happens next.

A totally random choice but Andrea and I watched the Mark Twain Prize show that presented the award to Conan O'Brien.

I remember watching O'Brien take over the reins of Late Night from David Letterman back in 1992 and I was thinking, does this guy know what he's doing?

Apparently he did and here he is receiving very funny but also heartfelt tributes from a variety of comic performers from John Mulaney to Sarah Silverman to Stephen Colbert.

And Paul Rudd with that damn Mac & Me clip again!

The special ends with Conan making an impassioned speech about standing up to tyranny and bullies using the power of comedy and culminates with Conan surrounded by dancing Mark Twains.

Here is a clip of one of my favorite bits from Late Night With Conan O'Brien as Conan checks out "Old Timey Baseball",

That is that for this week's Touchbase.

Until next time, remember to be good to one another and try to keep it down in there, would ya? I'm trying to watch TV over here.
