By the time this posts today (September 18th), the federal government will be consumed by chaos.
Once again, the US Government needs to pay the bills and it’s up to Congress to cut the check as it were by passing a budget.
Once again, hard right Republicans (the so called “Freedom Caucus” and others) don’t want to do that.
Not without massive cuts in spending.
Let’s get this point out of the way: I tend to agree government spending is out of control. And government debt is out of control.
But it’s funny how these issues only become issues when Republicans are in control of the House but not the White House.
Anyway, the GOP’s hard right are forcing a possible government shutdown to make their point and get their way.
The fiscal equivalent of holding your breath until you turn blue.
Government shut downs have been tried. They never work.
Trump tried it to get funding for his border wall. In his case “holding your breath until you turn blue” may have been literal and not metaphorical.
Ted Cruz instigated a government shut down to defund Obamacare.
Having invoked the name of Ted Cruz, we must now recite the I'm So Glad My Suffering Amuses You Ted Cruz Pledge.
Repeat after me:
Ted Cruz is a lying fuck bastard!
Ted Cruz is a lying fuck bastard!
Amen!
Amen!
Thank you.
Now to continue....
The right wing nut cases known as the Freedom Caucus have tried this before for those precious deep cuts in government spending.
Here’s the problem with those deep cuts in spending: no one wants to make ‘em when they’re hurting their own districts and constituents.
The Freedom Caucus might rant and rave about out of control food stamp spending but most of the people in this country who rely on food stamps are the working poor in mostly rural areas which means mostly Republican districts.
A government shutdown isn’t meant to be effective at accomplishing anything.
A government shutdown is a show of force designed to make it look like Republicans are accomplishing something.
If it hurts the Democrat in the White House, well, that's just gravy.
Meanwhile, as the Republicans in Congress can’t agree on a budget deal in order to do the work of government, their trigger fingers are itchy for impeaching President Joe Biden for… reasons. The actual reasons for impeachment are still as tenuous and specious as they were when I posted about this last week.
By the way there is footage of Kevin McCarthy complaining about Congress not getting any actual business of government done while focused on impeachment. That was from 2019 when Trump was being impeached for trying to extort Ukraine.
Now as Speaker of the House, McCarthy is overseeing a Congress not getting any actual business of government done while focused on impeachment.
Let's be honest, for the modern Republican Party, chaos is their business.
