Songs For Saturday: ELO, Brooklyn Duo and Chicago

Sometimes music contains a surprise, an unexpected riff in the middle or a surprise bit at the end or a complete mash up of two different genres.

The play list for today's Songs For Saturday will present some of my favorite tunes with some of those unexpected flourishes.

Let's kick off with Jeff Lynne and the Electric Light Orchestra and their cover of the Chuck Berry classic, "Roll Over Beethoven". When the word "orchestra" appears in the band name, it would be a shame not to include a full symphony in the performance with some bars from Beethoven's 5th Symphony.

While we're in a classical frame of mind, let's give a listen to Brooklyn Duo's cover of "Take On Me" by a-ha. In the middle of a lush and powerful symphonic take on the 1980s classic pop tune, what should pop up but "Flight of the Bumblebee", an orchestral interlude written by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov in 1899.

Next up on today's play list is a power ballad by Chicago, "Hard To Say I'm Sorry". After four minutes of romantic yearning, the band goes into a coda called "Get Away", a hard driving rocker.

When "Hard To Say I'm Sorry" was in rotation back in the day, I always hated it when radio stations would cut off the coda.

And that is that for today's playlist.

Until next time, remember to be good to one another and to always keep the music alive.
