Last week I wrote how in defiance of intelligence, wisdom and just plain friggin' common sense, Donald Trump was out polling Joe Biden in several key swing states where Biden won in 2020.
One of those states was Ohio.
Ohio's state legislature is currently under the control of the Republican Party which like most GOP led state governments has been working double time to pass laws denying women autonomy over their own bodies.
Yes, I'm talking about abortion.
Last week, the people of Ohio (in the same damn state that told pollsters they would prefer to vote for Trump over Biden) voted for a measure to enshrine a woman's right to choose in the state constitution.
In the aftermath of the Ohio election, Republicans across the country came to the sane realization that adding more and more restrictions to a woman's access to abortion is perhaps not a good thing and they should rethink---
I'm kidding!
Republicans across the country fretted about how they can now add more and more restrictions to a woman's access to abortion even in the face of opposition from the very people they allegedly represent.
Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives are still contemplating a national abortion ban.
Remember when the Republicans objection to Roe V. Wade was that abortion was a matter best left to the states? Well, they apparently don't remember that.
Why are Republicans so determined to go down this road of self-destruction with extreme strategies of opposing abortion that are against the will of most of the American population?
There lord and master, der Fuerher himself, Li'l Donnie Trump himself wills it.
After the pro-choice amendment measure passed in Ohio, Trump was on the offensive: “Well, everybody thought Roe v. Wade wouldn’t ever happen, and now it did. And we were able to stop a very radical agenda. The Democrats were killing babies after birth, killing babies in the ninth month, you know, etc., etc... The radicals are really the Democrats because they’ll kill babies in their eighth and ninth month, and they’ll kill babies after birth.”
Trump has cast himself as the enemy of Democrats who are out to kill your babies.
Trump has cast himself as the hero who got Roe V. Wade overturned by appointing conservative pro-life judges to the Supreme Court.
Since the Republican Party is in thrall to Trump, they will continue to push the big red panic button to eradicate any and all choice for women over their bodies, their very lives.
And since Republicans have jerrymandered the shit out of voting districts across the nation, they can hold on to power by appealing to their very narrow constituencies in defiance of the will of the majority.
And hence you get a state like Ohio where Trump leads in the polls where most people do not want the shit he's selling and that is quite the paradox.
No, I said "paradox", not "pair of ducks".
