Outlander has finally returned for the 2nd half of it's 7th season.
Life is never NOT complicated for Claire and Jamie. After getting back to Scotland, they receive a letter from Lord John in Philadelphia that his cousin Henry, filled with a couple of musket balls from the field of battle, is in desperate need of Claire’s medical skills to stay alive.
Jamie’s got shit to do in Scotland so he can’t leave yet but he urges Claire to go and convinces young Ian to go as well to help Claire and also to confirm if Rachel loves him or not.
Look, I agree with Ian: Rachel agreed to take care of his dog Rollo so of course she loves him. But others (including the slowly dying Old Ian) think that Young Ian really kind of needs to lock that down.
Back in America, Claire uses her 20th century surgical mojo to retrieve the musket balls and it looks like Henry will live. While she’s in town, Claire agrees to get a letter to a drop point to relay information to General George Washington.
(There is a war on, you know!)
Then things start going downhill fast. Claire’s received word that the boat Jamie was on to follow her back to America sank in the Atlantic with all hands lost.
And the British army does not take kindly to her being a courier for George Washington and are looking to hang Claire as a spy.
Lord John makes his standard go to move to offer to marry a woman to protect her from harm. He’s done this 2 times before.
Point of order: Lord John is gay and the women he makes these offers to are safe. His heart belongs to Jamie.
(No, Jamie is NOT dead. First rule of death in drama: no body, no death. Second rule of death in drama: if the actor is in the opening credits, no death.)
Meanwhile, Claire’s son in law Roger McKenzie went through the stones to travel back in time to find his kidnapped son Jemmy. But instead of winding up in the year 1778, he arrived in 1739. Batshit crazy Geillis Duncan (another time traveller who Claire killed back in season 3) is still alive in 1739 which creates all sorts of wibbly wobbly timey wimey for Roger to navigate.
Back in 1778 in Philadelphia, Rollo is safe and still a good dog.
And Ian saves Rachel from batshit crazy Arch Bug who still wants revenge on Ian who accidentally killed his wife.
Ian and Rachel profess their love for each other.
Which I thought was obvious.
- Ian let Rachel take care of Rollo.
- Rachel agreed to take care of Rollo.
- Rollo is a good dog.
- Of course Ian and Rachel love each other.
So much stuff going on in Outlander and damn it, how I hate this show!
Andrea and I are still following the NBC medical drama Brilliant Minds.
Some TV pundits speculate that Brilliant Minds is not likely to be renewed for a season 2. The ratings for the show have been underwhelming. But so far, NBC has not pre-empted the show once since it debuted.
Zachary Quinto is Dr. Oliver Wolf, a neurologist at Bronx General Hospital who is deeply and passionately earnest about digging down deep to find out the cause and solution to a variety of neurological mysteries that come through his door.
Brilliants Minds is a network TV show with a gay man as it’s lead. At first Oliver's gayness was revealed through some subtle commentary. When asked if he played sports, Oliver noted that as a pale skinny gay kid, he didn’t get a lot of chances to engage in team sports.
Recent episodes have put his sexual orientation front and center as he enters a torrid affair with Dr. Josh Nichols, chair of neurosurgery at Bronx General.
They be kissing and stuff.
There is a supporting cast of interns who have been tasked with supporting Dr. Wolf’s unorthodox methodology. There are efforts to give them back stories and lives outside of work but I’m not completely invested in this crew.
If Brilliant Minds does get a 2nd season, I expect there will be a major cast shake up.
