Songs For Saturday: U2

SONGS FOR SATURDAY

With today being the anniversary of the September 11th attacks, I posting a couple of songs from U2 that have a certain relevance for the day.

First of all is a live performance of "Where the Streets Have No Name" with a hauntingly beautiful prologue of "Amazing Grace".

U2 paid tribute to the 9/11 victims during their performance of "Where the Streets Have No Name" at the Super Bowl XXXVI halftime show in February 2002. The performance featured the names of the September 11 victims projected onto a large white banner behind the band.

Bono says the song is about a world where without divisions of religion or income, "a place where the streets have no name....Maybe that's the dream of all art: to break down the barriers and the divisions between people and touch upon the things that matter the most to us all."

Next up from U2 is a song from the soundtrack of the movie by Martin Scorcese, The Gangs of New York.  Here is U2 with "The Hands That Built America".

"The Hands That Built America" is about the experience of nineteenth century Irish migrants to New York and their contributions to building America. But written within a year of the 2001 attacks, it can't help but to resonate with the thoughts, hopes and fears of America in the aftermath of that tragedy.

Well, that is that for today's Songs For Saturday.

On this day of remembrance, let us not only remember those we lost on that terrible day but also remember what we can gain from that loss, a unity of purpose and spirit. We must stand firm against all forces, both within and without, that threaten that unity.

Until next time, remember to be good to one another and to always keep the music alive.
