Tuesday TV Touchbase: Supergirl, Stargirl and Gilmore Girls

Today on the Tuesday TV Touchbase, it's all about girl power with Supergirl, Stargirl and Gilmore Girl....s.

Supergirl is back with some degree of normalcy with Kara Dancers back working at Catco, juggling duo identity woes with her work as a journalist and Supergirl's duty as a protector of National City.

Kara's time in the Phantom Zone is still an issue with Kara having flashbacks to her trauma while trapped in the zone and finding out that people in National City were tormented by Phantoms that escaped from the Zones when her friends tried to rescue her.  Trauma AND guilt. Sounds about right for Kara on this show.

Going into the Phantom Zone to rescue Kara has left all sorts of scars on her friends.  Kelly Olsen took a hit to her psyche has the Zone messed with her fears and doubts. In her new job as a social worker, Kelly has a new mission in life and renewed sense of self confidence. And it looks like she'll be taking up the mantle of her brother's alter ego, Guardian.

I really don't think anyone has been demanding the return of Guardian.

Nyxly, the female 5th dimensial imp Supergirl met in the Phantom Zone, is poised to finally cause trouble in the real world.  Invading the dreams of Nia Nal (Dreamer), Nyxly tempts Nia with the one thing she wants more than anything else in the world, one more chance to be with her mother, to talk to her, to gain more guidance in the use of her powers.

There's a lot of Supergirl's patented "reasons why you're awesome" speeches that each person in the cast has to give to another person.  Alex has to give Kelly two of them. I know these speeches are supposed to be positive, uplifting and life affirming but they happen so often in this series, it almost borders on self-parody.

There's no clear trajectory of where the Supergirl series is going as these episodes wind down to the series finale. Intergang appears to be a threat and we know Nyxly is going cause trouble but where exactly is Kara going? What is going to be her likely endgame?

I hope she gets a happy ending. After all the crap Kara has been through, she deserves one. I hope that doesn't mean forcing her into some kind of romantic relationship with William. Yeah, he's handsome, good hearted and he has that British accent but I hope the show avoids the cliche of Kara flying off into the sunset happy because she has a man in her life.

Meanwhile on Stargirl, the Shade has become the enigmatic force for....   well, not good or evil but a force for his own agenda, whatever that might be.  We know Eclipso represents true evil, a real and deadly sinister threat to Blue Valley and the world.

But everybody else who Courtney would consign to the villain column---Shade, Sportsmaster, Tigress---defy such easy categorization.

The worst thing we knew about the Shade was during the ISA's deadly assault on the Justice Society, the Shade killed Dr. Midnight.

Except maybe he didn't?

And Dr. Midnight isn't actually dead?

More, as they say, to come.

My exploration of the world of Gilmore Girls continues.  I recently caught the series finale and the looped around to see the pilot. Rory gets accepted in the prestigious private school Chilton which requires a check for an amount that is not in Lorelai's checking account.

With hat in hand, Lorelai does what she very, very, very much does NOT want to do and approaches her parents for help in funding Rory's education.  Richard is ready to go get his checkbook but Emily extracts a price first. Lorelai and Rory must come over for dinner every Friday.

Lorelai has a contentious relationship with her parents (primarily her mother) and very, very, very much does NOT want to make that deal. But Lorelai is determined Rory is going to succeed where her mother didn't and so a deal is reached.

Which is why Lorelai and Rory are stuck having Friday dinner with Richard and Emily in subsequent episodes.

Meanwhile, as much as Rory is looking to escape public high school hell, things take a turn when she meets Dean Forester,  the new kid from Chicago totally charms Rory and makes her question her desire to go to Chilton.

Rory better watch herself; there's something supernatural about this Dean person. (Perhaps because he's played by future Supernatural star Jared Padalecki?)

Lorelai is not happy with this development.  She had to suck up all her pride to ask her parents for financial help to get Rory into Chilton which she very, very, very much did NOT want to do.  And at age 16, Rory is at the same age Lorelai was when she got caught up with some boy and got pregnant.

In the pilot episode, Stars Hollow seems a less magical place. Perhaps because the episode was shot in the real town of Unionville, Ontario near Toronto; for the rest of the series, a more idealized Stars Hollow is re-created on the Warner Bros. lot in beautifully sunny Burbank, California.

Picking this show up from the beginning, I guess I'm on board for the Gilmore Girls now.

And that is that for this week's Tuesday TV Touchbase.

Next week, we look at the wrap up for Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

And at some point, I will have something on Only Murders in the Building.

And some other point beyond that: Season 2 of The Orville Vs. Season 2 of Star Trek: Discovery.

Until next time, remember to be good to one another and try to keep it down in there, would ya? I'm trying to watch TV over here.
