Tuesday TV Touchbase: Leverage, A.P. Bio and House

Today's Touchbase catches us up on catching up on old TV shows.

Having caught some random episodes in syndication, Andrea and I are now following the series Leverage.

Leverage is about a team of thieves and con artists led by a former insurance investigator who use their skills to seek justice for ordinary people who have screwed over by corporations and the government.

"The rich and powerful, they take what they want.

We steal it back for you.

And sometimes, bad guys make the best good guys.

We provide... leverage."

---Nathan Ford (Timothy Hutton)

Basically the Leverage team sets up a long con to lead their targets to expose their own nefarious activities and yes, the team gets their mark to pony up money for the team and their clients.

On the team is Eliot Spencer played by Christian Kane who was Jacob Stone on The Librarians.

OK, that's weird: three series in a row that Andrea and I are playing catch up on all begin with the letter "L": Lucifer, Librarians and now Leverage.

I've resumed my catch up on A. P. Bio.  After season 1, ousted philosophy professor Jack Griffin is still NOT teaching biology to his A.P.Bio class but he is still employing them in petty schemes for revenge and doing research for whatever get rich quick scheme Jack is working on this week.

Jack is a bit more sympathetic with his students by season 2 even as he still refuses to teach them biology.

But they are learning more important lessons about life 'n' stuff.

Son Dean and friend Jan are catching up on House and I've been joining them on their journey.

(What Dean and Jan are doing here in the Fortress of Ineptitude is it's own story for perhaps another time.)

I've followed them through seasons 5 and 6 and we're up to season 7 now.  We've seen Dr. Gregory House descend into an hallucinatory Vicodin fueled mental breakdown, spend time in rehab and so far has remained clear of Vicodin but not without being tempted to return to his pain killer of choice.

So far into season 7, House and Cuddy have finally given into to their years long denied attraction into a sexually charged relationship. House keeps anticipating this thing with Cuddy is going to eventually blow up. (Spoiler: it will.)

When watching episodes of House, one becomes keenly aware of thie show's standard tropes.

  • Patient experiences weird dibilitating medical problem.
  • House and his team diagnose it's condition A and prescribe treatment 1.
  • Treatment 1 nearly kills the patient and House and the team figures it must be condition B and prescribe treatment 2.
  • Treatment 2 nearly kills the patient and so on and so on.
  • While in a conversation with someone (usually Wilson) about some damn thing or another that has nothing to do with the patient, House has an epiphany about what the fuck is really wrong and the patient is saved.

To be fair, there are some variations on the formula.

Such as the gut wrenching and heart breaking season 6 finale where House is on a site where a giant crashed into a building.

That is that for this week's Touchbase.

Next week: the return of The Sandman.

Until next time, remember to be good to one another and try to keep it down in there, would ya? I'm trying to watch TV over here.
