Whazzup With Doctor Who?

New Doctor Who stuff is not quite done. There is the forthcoming UNIT spin off, the 5 episode The War Between Land and Sea.

But...

As of this writing, there is not a release date and one source I recently read said the project may not be released until 2026.

As far as I know, the show is done and in the can, ready to go. Why wait until 2026?

Particularly if Disney+ wants out of it's Doctor Who deal.

Maybe the forthcoming San Diego Comic Con will have more definitive news.

Despite all the gloom and doom swirling around the franchise, Doctor Who will have a presence at this year's Comic Con.

From July 24th to 27th, Whovians in San Diego will gain access to UNIT's top-secret Black Archive– a classified facility where the most dangerous alien artifacts and forbidden knowledge are stored – through a fully immersive pop-up experience including props and artifacts from the last sixty years of the show.

This is obviously more an appeal to nostalgia than any kind of look to the future.

Still, it does seem like a lot of time, effort and expense to put into a franchise that is for the moment dead in the water with no definitive plans for the future.

And to make matters gloomier...

Meanwhile, Doctor Who is leaving HBO Max.

The modern series (2005 to 2022) will be gone from the platform by July 31st.  Along with spin off series Torchwood and Sarah Jane Adventures.

No, there is NO news about where these episodes may be going next.

Now I have a thought and it might well belong under the heading of "wishful thinking" but here we go.

What if Disney+ is not as done with Doctor Who as the current rumor mill would suggest?

What if Disney+ doubles down by bringing the modern era back catalogue to build a bigger Doctor Who presence on the site?

What if Disney+ is putting off the UNIT series to 2026 to spread out some new content until production on new episodes of Doctor Who can resume?

All this is wild speculation on my part and I'm too cynical to believe it much. I fear that post the UNIT series, Doctor Who will be homeless, lost in limbo.

Or maybe....

Comic Con will have some unexpected good news after all.
