Comics Blah Blah Comics: Justice League of America #112

Here is the cover of the first Justice League of America comic book I ever bought: 


I don't know how much this issue is worth in mint condition but that doesn't matter because this issue wasn't anywhere near mint within days of being retrieved from the spinner rack at Dameron Drug

I read the hell out of this thing! This book got rolled up in my back pocket and taken out on bike rides. Over time, this comic had the consistency of warm pudding. The cover hangs on barely as an act of defiance against entropy. And one more thing to kill any collectible value of this book. 

I drew capes on everybody. 

What can I say, I was very young, very stupid but what can I say, I like capes. So if you didn't have a cape, I took my little stub of a #2 pencil and gave you one. 

The Flash got a cape. 
Green Lantern got a cape. 
Black Canary got a cape. 
Green Arrow got a cape. (Pulling arrows out of a quiver with a cape in the way? I didn't care. Green Arrow got a cape!)

I was like Oprah Winfrey, giving out capes instead of cars. Even Amazo got a cape!

I may be in the minority here but I liked Red Tornado. Why? He had a cape! And he had the balls to wear it near his tornado twirling torso.*

*Yes, technically, Red Tornado does not have balls in that sense. But I'm sure he has ball bearings. 

The story was a continuation of a story from the previous issue (which I had never seen until a few years ago) where the Justice League lost half their powers and in this issue, worked out a crazy scheme to get them back by activating their android nemesis Amazo to somehow collect their missing powers which would then be transferred back to the heroes. 

What could go wrong? 

Among the heroes who lost half of their powers was Batman. Now as I read this issue, I am very, very new to the comics game but I'd seen the Batman TV show and I knew Batman didn't have any super powers other than being awesome. Well, apparently being half awesome is not enough for our Caped Crusader as he's moping about so the other Leaguers opt to let Batman, er, keep an eye on things back on their satellite HQ.**

**Now THAT tripped me out! The JLA meet up...in SPACE?! Cool! 

So our intrepid super heroes head down to Earth to fight Amazo because that's what it's gonna take to make Amazo re-absorb those missing powers and...you know what? It's comics! Just move on. 


Back on the satellite, the assembled heroes plug Amazon into a doohickey tube thing to get the powers out of it and back into them. Except...BUGGER!...Amazo's ready for them and zaps them all unconscious. He had figured out their plan! 


But Batman was ready for him. The android with the powers of the Justice League gets taken down by our Gotham Gangbuster! Hell yeah! 


So what's the deal? Batman realized that Amazo would absorb half of Batman's detective prowess (which apparently is a super power after all?) and figure out the plan so Batman booby trapped the doohickey to immediately drain Amazo's powers, leaving only enough to zap the Justice Leaguers unconscious.  Except for Batman who took the time to insulate his boots.  


Man, working only on half of his cylinders, Batman out awesomed everybody! 


As for the rest of the book, the Seven Soldiers of Victory were an odd bunch but kind of cool. I also enjoyed the Starman short. (Green cape?! Sweet!!) And the Justice League back up by Gardner Fox and Mike Sekowsky? I enjoyed that adventure as well (I added capes to Wonder Woman and Aquaman!) but I did not care for Sekowsky's penchant for boxy physiques and pointy boots. 


But this was my first exposure to super heroes operating as a team. And I was enamored with the concept. As a young person who was something of an outsider, I gravitated towards super heroes and specifically the idea that in their civilian identities, they possessed powers and abilities unknown to others around them. But in the Justice League, I discovered the idea that people who are different can still find a connection with others and form a special bond.  

The Justice League of America wasn't just a cool comic book but it gave me hope for MY own future.

Tips For Newborns


Hi there! Welcome to my blog, I'm So Glad My Suffering Amuses You. I'm Dave-El and I'm glad you decided to pop by, especially if you're first time reader. 

I mean, a really first time reader. Like you've just been born and you're already trolling the internet? Wow! And I know it may not look like you've gotten off to a great start, little infant, because...well, you wound up here. 

But you're in luck! Just the other day on Twitter, this topic was trending: 


So naturally I had a few comments on that topic, not that anyone asked me. (No one ever asks me.) Anyway, here are few things that may be of help to you, my new infant reader.  

  • Be sure to stare at the ceiling really hard! There could be ghosts up there! 
  • Enjoy the worry free pooping while you can 
  • Invest in a varied financial portfolio. 
  • Or you just drool a lot, your call, really 
  • Know this: we are not saving enough for college so a job with a paper hat is in your future. 
  • It's really cute when you lay on your back, kick and goo...now! Trust me, no one wants to see you do that when you're 50! 
  • There is no such thing as a money back guarantee on babies no matter what your daddy tells you.

And here is one more comment on the topic. 

 should run about 15% of the bill; bump it up to 20% when they become toddlers.

You Know Him, You Love Him But Can We Live Without Him?


Two weeks ago, late night talk show host David Letterman announced his retirement and that he would be stepping down as the host of The Late Show on CBS in 2015. You know how something can be expected but still be a blow when it comes? Letterman had recently signed an extension of his contract with CBS for only 1 more year. And the landscape of the late night TV talk shows has fundamentally changed in recent weeks with the ascendancy of Jimmy Fallon as host of the Tonight Show on NBC.  And Dave, God bless him, is not getting any younger. 


David Letterman was in the impossible position of doing a job that he was exceedingly good at but clearly no longer had his heart in it as much anymore. But what else was he to do? Hosting a late night talk show is in his DNA. But sooner or later, Dave was going to have to move on.  The question became less of when but how.


If nothing else, Letterman and CBS only need look at their brethren over at NBC for a detailed diagram of how to NOT handle a talk show transition. Going back to Johnny Carson stepping down as the host of the Tonight Show, NBC seems to have a knack for making things worse.  


The whole Leno vs. Letterman debacle was poorly handled. Jay Leno was already doing the job as Johnny’s permanent guest host and NBC liked what they saw. The numbers were good and Jay was a congenial, affable host. But there were equally strong voices that David Letterman was Johnny’s heir apparent and he had done his time as the host of Late Nite at 12:30; it was time for Dave to play in the big leagues.


Now I will state my bias as being a Letterman guy over Jay Leno. That being said, NBC needed to step up and make a choice and stick by the choice. While the Tonight Show job went to Leno, NBC  offered Letterman deals like if he agreed to stay with the network, he could have the Tonight Show 18 months later. Hardly a ringing endorsement for Leno OR Letterman. “Jay, you’ve got the job. But before you start, here’s your 18 month notice.” “Dave, you deserve to host to the Tonight Show…but not right now.” Once NBC picked Leno to replace Carson, they needed to show confidence in their decision and their anointed star. As for Letterman, “well, we wish you would stay on at 12:30 but if you need to go, we understand.”


Of course NBC didn’t want Dave bolting over to CBS, ABC or Fox to put any dings in the shiny new Tonight Show With Jay Leno but other than giving David Letterman 11:30, there was no way in hell NBC was going to hold to Dave. And loyal company man he may be but Leno had his case for being the Tonight Show host: he was already doing the job and doing it well. If NBC gave the Tonight Show to Dave, Jay would’ve walked. NBC tried desperately to hold on to both men when it was pretty much an assured impossibility that whoever did not get the 11:30 slot was going to move on.


Years later it was time for Jay Leno to move on. Except it wasn’t Jay’s idea. NBC once again faced an issue of not wanting to lose someone, in this case Conan O’Brien. So they made a deal with Conan: you can have the Tonight Show in 5 years. Well, after 5 years, why there’s Conan at 11:30 but Jay Leno isn’t really gone; he’s got a talk show on at 10:00 PM.  Some will blame to failure of Conan’s Tonight Show on the 10 PM Jay Leno Show lead in that was getting clobbered in the ratings. Well, that didn’t help but Conan’s numbers weren’t that great before the Jay’s 10 o’clock show debuted.  Now, I was rooting for Conan to succeed at 11:30 but he never seemed to find his groove in the role. It wasn't until the writing was on the wall and Conan was on his way out that Conan really took off as host of the Tonight Show. But by then it was too late and Jay Leno was back in his old digs.


The most recent transition from Leno to Jimmy Fallon has gone a lot more smoothly. But still there was the air of NBC forcing Jay out before he was ready to go. After all, Jay Leno’s Tonight Show regularly dominated in the ratings. And Jay seemed to be genuinely enjoying his time as host.


Meanwhile, Letterman’s looking  grumpier and the ratings are anemic compared to Leno’s. Letterman had a lot of good will at CBS. After all, before David Letterman, CBS had NO presence at 11:30.  Old movies, crime dramas and one earlier attempt at a talk show hosted by Pat Sajak.  If well past his peak, Letterman delivered a stronger audience for CBS at 11:30 than anything before.  But all things have their time and CBS did not want to pull an NBC and be seen pushing their late night icon out the doors of the Ed Sullivan Theater.  But would Dave, doing the only thing he knows how to do, walk away on his own?


The interesting thing in all this that it doesn’t seem like it’s been three + decades since David Letterman began his career as a late night TV show host. David was the standard bearer of the new order, an edgier, snarkier comic sensibility that mocked the celebrity culture even as it was celebrated.  I was in college when Letterman started Late Night on NBC and a lot of us collegiate types stayed up late to watch David Letterman deconstruct everything we understood about television and talk shows and comedy.


Now it’s over 30 years later and Letterman bears the flag of the old order. Damn, how did that happen? And David Letterman retiring? Do you know what that means?


It means I am old. 


Well, that can’t be right. 


So I’ve got a year to make peace with a  world that doesn’t have David Letterman hosting a late night talk show. It’s going to be an interesting year as a I watch a part of my pop culture heritage do victory laps before driving off into the sunset with Stephen Colbert settling in the desk chair as the new host.  Ah, the perils of an old man watching parts of the world he knew spin away as an uncertain tomorrow moves into place.

This (Non) Sporting Life #13: Bad Board Games


Hi there! Dave-El here and welcome to I'm So Glad My Suffering Amuses You, the Jenga of blogs in that it's irritating, nerve wracking and makes a big mess. 

Today is when I post This (Non) Sporting Life, the blog post about sports by a guy who does not know much about sports. 

Well, college basketball season has come to an end. Kudos UConn's men and women basketball teams for winning their respective NCAA tournaments. 

To be fair, for the women, I was rooting for Notre Dame, newly ensconced in the Atlantic Coast Conference, as a sort of defacto home team. After all, the women of UConn keep coming to this dance and winning this dance year after year.  I think the trophy for the women's tournament is pre-engraved with UConn's name. 

I wonder if we should invoke some kind of John Laroquette Rule for the women of UConn.  Years ago, actor John Laroquette played attorney Dan Fielding on the sitcom Night Court. Every year, John would get nominated and every year John would win. Eventually it got embarrassing and John had to take himself out of the running to give somebody else a shot. C'mon, women of UConn, isn't a teensy bit embarrassing to win this thing year after year? Wouldn't you like to take some time off? Just something to think about. 

The UConn men beat Duke one year at the title game. I'm not pissed at UConn about that but I am still ticked off at a local sportscaster named Mike Hogewood who in a pre-game show said, "We'll see you back here after Duke's victory!" Dude, that jinxed us! Really, you had to go and say that? Geez! 

So that's a wrap on another year of NCAA basketball. The pros of the NBA are still playing until their season ends sometime in 2019. Damn, NBA seasons are LONG! The pro game hasn't interested me since the heyday of Michael Jordan. Why? Because I'm old! 

Baseball's started up but since that's outside where the pollen is, I think I'll stay in and play some board games. Which is a not terribly subtle transition to this bit. 

Several months ago, #BadBoardGames was trending on Twitter.  So I went to work on that and came up with these ideas for really bad board games.

Doctor Who Weekend: The Ultimate Love Story


Hi! Dave-El here and after being back at the blog thing only a week, I'm already up against the dreaded deadline doom so not a lot to cover for today's Doctor Who Weekend installment. 

I did want to share the drawing that I found on Twitter. It is a beautifully illustrated rendition of the Idris, the female form of the TARDIS from "The Doctor's Wife", running away with the First Doctor

This illustration is masterful at capturing the essence of Idris' comments. Notice that it's Idris guiding a somewhat startled Doctor as they head forth to...everywhere. 

Whether the Doctor stole a TARDIS or the TARDIS stole him, ultimately the two are the ultimate companions to each other. There's a reason the 11th Doctor episode featuring Idris is called "The Doctor's WIFE". More so than River Song or Rose Tyler or any woman of mere flesh and blood, the Doctor cares for the TARDIS and the TARDIS takes care of the Doctor. The ultimate love story, a man and his machine.

Alan Alda played the character of Dr. Benjamin Franklin "Hawkeye" Pearce on the acclaimed CBS program M*A*S*H. Hawkeye was a doctor in the Korean War who saved lives using his skills as a surgeon AND an expert archer. (Wait, I might be confusing this Hawkeye with the Hawkeye at Marvel Comics.) Anyway, Hawkeye was there for every damn day of the Korean War which according to the history books was 3 years but somebody forgot to tell Hawkeye cause he stayed there 11 years!

Dave-El's Poetry Corner


Poetry. 

Poetry is an art form that gets very little respect. It's short, maybe it rhymes or maybe it doesn't and it doesn't really have to mean anything. How hard is it to write a short thing that many not even rhyme and doesn't have to mean anything? 

Yet those who write poetry well engage in the use of language at a level of skill and talent that those who write prose can only aspire. 

Poetry is easy to make fun of.  For example take this segment from the classic animated TV show Animaniacs, a bit called Dot's Poetry Corner





The problem is that most people are compelled to poetry at the most extreme of human emotions. 

Take this work of emotional dreck written by yours truly during one of my emotional downturns. (Kids, if you're supposed to take your crazy meds every day, take your crazy meds every day.)  


There’s a man in my head 
that screams every day.
Every day he screams, 
he screams in my head.
Let me out, he screams, 
he screams every day.
Let me out, let me out, let me out!
He screams and he claws, 
he claws at the walls.
He claws at the walls of the shuttered halls 
in my head.
The doors are locked 
and the windows blocked
In the shuttered halls in my head.
The air is stale with regret, 
hot with rage
In the shuttered halls in my head.
There the man screams, 
he screams every day.
Let me out, let me out, let me out!
He screams so loud, 
there’s blood in my ears.
But the man in my head is going to stay.
I can’t get out; why should he? 


I mean, really, what the hell? Was I wearing all black with a beret and dark glasses while pondering soulfully into a grey wind swept vista of a cold winter's day? No, of course not. I do not own a beret.  


But yeah, that was in a very dark place. However, right now, with the brain chemicals sloshing about in a fairly tranquil and even balance, I am absolutely stuck to come up with even a naughty limerick.  


In March, I reached deep into my inner Suess to come up with this little poetic gem for my 1 year anniversary blog post


Today is the birthday of a blog. 

No, not of a frog
No, not of a shknog
Most certainly not of a woo-wog. 
But of a blog. 
A blog? A blog? 
What is this thing, a blog?
A blog is a log
No, not that kind of a log
Not one of wood
But one of wood of would be good
If I need a place to sit 
When I no longer stood
But this log is not of a tree 
A tree that is brown with leaves of green 
But a log is a place where I write 
On the light of a screen
A blog is a log of the thoughts 
That run 'round in my nog
Thoughts that are smart 
And thoughts that are stupid 
Thoughts from my heart 
And thoughts that are fahloopid
So happy birthday to you my blog
You are the bloggiest blog
You track the thoughts from my noggiest nog
And I haven't the foggiest fog
On how to end this rhyme
So I will just end it at this time 
With a last note to each mother and brother 
To each kuhnother and blutrother
To just be good to one another. 


Nothing like channeling non-sensical vibes of Dr. Seuss to come up with a light and perky little work of poetry, eh? 


Ultimately the pinnacle poetic achievement
for me has always been Robert Frost. I copied this poem in a post about 8 or 9 months ago. I don't feel like looking for it to set up a link so I'll just post it here. My favorite Frost poem, Once By The Pacific.


The shattered water made a misty din.

Great waves looked over others coming in,
And thought of doing something to the shore
That water never did to land before.
The clouds were low and hairy in the skies,
Like locks blown forward 
in the gleam of eyes.
You could not tell, and yet it looked as if
The shore was lucky in being backed by cliff,
The cliff in being backed by continent;
It looked as if a night of dark intent
Was coming, and not only a night, an age.
Someone had better be prepared for rage.

Powerful stuff yet not overwrought. There's a clear sense of imagery and a strong urgency in the text. Stuff like that, I wish I could do. 

Much of what I've done on this blog has been an exercise in developing the discipline of writing and one place I really want to put that to the test is in poetry. I want to see if I can cultivate the skill set needed to write poems and not just when I'm in a deep dark pit of depression or flitting about stupidly in the fields of Dr. Seuss. 

So I'm putting on my lab coat and firing up the Bunsen burners 'cause I'm going to start experimenting with poetry. 

May God have mercy on us all.
