While discussing Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck, animator Chuck Jones summed up the differences between the two characters as such: "Bugs is who we want to be; Daffy is who we really are."
I'm fascinated by the variations between how the world sees us and how we see ourselves. Sometimes the gap between these perceptions is not that wide. The internal perception is in sync with the outside view. What they see is what you're giving them. This can be admirable quality if the person in question is a relatively well adjusted human being. This person displays a level of confidence in themselves that is inspiring to others.
Of course this can be a pain in the ass when the person is NOT a relatively well adjusted human being. Some of these people are perceived as assholes by the world around them and you know what? They know that! Part of their internal view of self is, "Yes, I am an asshole." They see no reason to change because they are being true to themselves, they're "keeping it real". Congratulations, you have an asshole for life.
Others have a negative perception inside and out. Writer Donald Westlake had a character in his Dortmunder novels called Arnie Albright who was a fence for stolen goods. Arnie was a smelly, gross, unpleasant person that nobody wanted to talk to or be around. And if you were unclear on your view of Arnie, he would be glad to clarify it for you: "Yes, I know I'm a smelly, gross, unpleasant person that nobody wants to talk to or be around."
Which didn't help matters any; such comments only wanted to make you want to be around him less. This did work to Arnie's advantage in that you were willing to accept whatever Arnie was willing to offer just so you didn't have to spend time around him haggling.
It's hard to redeem such a person because the reality within and the reality outside are in line with each other. The world thinks I suck? Well, that's OK, I think I suck too.
But one can argue that for good or ill, persons who perceive themselves the way the world perceives them are at an advantage. They have a true assessment of their strengths and weaknesses. They are not prone to self deception.
Then there are others for whom the gap between the real world view and the inside view is extensive.
We may not be as good looking as we think we are or, conversely, we are not quite as ugly as we think we are.
We may overestimate how much we really are a sinner or a saint while our actions to the rest of the world speak otherwise.
We see ourselves as put upon, as victims while the world wonders what the fuss is all about from people who are blessed. Or those who see themselves as blessed when they seem to have so little.
Sometimes the error in perception is from the outside. People don't always see correctly past our facades. We project confidence and joy while our insides are torn about doubt and sadness.
But you'll also encounter persons that others have pegged correctly but the persons themselves do not see the truth of themselves. Maybe they see themselves as doing good, of leading a just and righteous cause while their every action tells a different story.
And once in a while, you'll meet a person who does not see a good person inside but others perceive as decent and kind. And it's the outside view that is correct. Sometime, somewhere, the inner well was poisoned, a ill considered word, a lack of understanding, love or affection. This person leads a good life, is a good person. And everyone can see that except for that person.
Perception and reality are tricky things to navigate sometimes. Sometimes the two are in order, other times that are not aligned at all. But it is important to see both sides of that equation. Otherwise one side or the other may be trapped in delusion and the world may be missing out on a really great person. Or maybe the one missing out on that really great person is you.
Be good to one another.

This (Non) Sporting Life: Somebody's Going BACK To Cleveland?!?!
Hi there! Welcome to another installment of This (Non) Sporting Life, the blog post about sports from a guy who doesn't know much about sports.
There are certain stories that even a non sports oriented guy like me will pick up on because it's really A BIG DEAL! Such as the recent loss by Brazil to Germany during the World Cup. As a student of history, I'm always a bit concerned when I hear of any country getting beat by Germany in a global event beginning with the word "World". In this case, the second word being "Cup" and not "War", then the world should really be worried because soccer...excuse me, "futbol"...is A REALLY BIG DEAL!
Soccer is a really, really, REALLY BIG DEAL in Brazil. Love of soccer is even bigger than Brazil's insects.
So there was much crying and gnashing of teeth in Brazil which had already engraved the World Cup trophy and everything. This was a major blow to the Brazilian psyche, almost as painful as a Brazilian bikini wax.
And the thing is, the Germany-Brazil game wasn't the final. No, there were still more games of the World Cup to be played. And the World Cup was in Brazil.
OK, it's kind of like this: dude, you're about to get married to the girl of your dreams when the minister asks, "Is there anyone here who objects to this marriage?". And some guy actually stands up and says, "I object! I should be marrying this woman!" And your blushing bride exclaims, "Yes! Yes, I will marry you instead! And right now!" And now you have to stand there and watch while the two of THEM get married instead AND be there on their honeymoon!
So, Brazil, do I understand your pain?
Well, at least you got a shot at 3rd place in the World Cup, right?
--------------------------------------------------
On the exact and complete opposite of the emotional spectrum is Cleveland OH. Back in 2010, the Cleveland Cavaliers lost their absolute best chance at winning an NBA title when basketball superstar LeBron James decided to load up the truck and move to Miami with its swimming pools and movie stars where he figured he had a better chance of winning an NBA championship.
Well, that certainly seemed awfully self-centered and opportunistic.
It also proved to be correct as LeBron and the Miami Heat won two titles over the last four years.
Correct or not, Cleveland did not take the departure of Lebron James all that well.
There was much crying and gnashing of teeth inBrazil Cleveland as the radio airwaves were filled with angry rants and the skyline filled with the smoke of burning LeBron James Cleveland Cavalier jerseys.
This week LeBron announced he was returning to Cleveland and to the Cavaliers.
And there was much rejoicing in Cleveland.
After all, it's not everyday someone intentionally and voluntarily returns to Cleveland.
OK, before I move on, a bit about that image above. On the left is a still from an episode of The Fairly Oddparents where Cosmo wants to attend the wonderful, magical "Land of Cleve". There's a running gag about crime scenes in the city of Cleveland. For example, there's this particular exchange:
Police Officer: "Just stay out of the crime scene, OK?"
Wanda: "But the whole city is a crime scene!"
Ah, fun at Cleveland's expense! There's nothing more American, is there?*
*I'm willing to re-examine this viewpoint with an all expense paid trip to Cleveland.**
**I'm willing to re-examine my viewpoint of anywhere. I really need to get out of the house.
The second half is taken from the cover of Cleveland's Plain Dealer newspaper which heralds the coming of their messiah... I mean, LeBron James.
Sigh.
Fine, "messiah", then.
So it seems all is forgiven. The airwaves are filled with declarations of joy and of victories yet to be won. The truly faithful among the Cavalier fans retrieve the LeBron James jerseys they did not burn and weep tears of relief and happiness. The yellow crime scene tape glistens in the sunshine. All is right with Cleveland.
Meanwhile, Brazil considers plans for an insect invasion of Germany and the Netherlands.
Be good to one another.

Doctor Who Weekend: Bring Me the Head of Marcelo Carmago
Hi there, Whovians! And welcome to Doctor Who Weekend!
This past week saw the news that the scripts for the first five episodes of Doctor Who Series 8 had been released out into the wild. While Doctor Who fans were tantalized by the prospect of getting a sneak peak at the coming season, most message boards have had the same response on the subject: "No, I can wait."
No only is August 23rd not that far away (but it's far enough, mind you!) but it also undermines the very wonder of watching a Doctor Who episode for the first time. The whole deal of an TV show or movie or play or book or whatever is to enjoy that thing on its own terms. Writers, producers, artists, actors, directors, musicians, creators all put their heart and soul in a work of art and we should get to experience that work as it is. Do we really need to have our experiences deconstructed before we can even experienced them?
Yeah, I agree with my fellow Whovians: "I can wait."
No, I really can't!
OK, yes, I can!
Oh, this is SO hard!
Meanwhile, I'd really hate to be the poor son of a bitch whose watermarked name appears on the leaked scripts. Were the actions of this Marcelo Camargo deliberate or accidental? In any case, the consequences can't be good. There's no telling how this might turn out.
Amended, July 13th, 5:37 AM:
Marcelo Carmago has struck again! "Episodes" 1 and 2 made it online. I put "episodes" in quotes because reports are these are rough edits, in black and white, without CGI effects, without final music tracks and with watermarks all over the footage including watermarks of that now most infamous name, Marcelo Carmago. In short, nothing really worth watching other than for the sole purpose of spoiling the actual episodes in question.
Which we don't want to do!
Stay true blue, Whovians! And stay strong! August 23rd will be here before long!

While my time as a Doctor Who fan goes back over 30 years, my position here in the El family Fortress of Ineptitude as the biggest Doctor Who is frequently challenged by my wife Andrea.
Recently this cartoon was posted on Twitter and it kind of encapsulates just how this came about.
Andrea is on Twitter and has like 2,000 followers which isn't fair because I only have 120 followers and I'm way funnier than she is. Among those followers are Doctor Who Magazine editor Tom Spurgeon and Big Finish producer/Dalek voice guy Nicholas Briggs. And they talk to her! Amazing! She finds out stuff in the Whoverse before I do. There's no doubt who the Whovian Supremo is around here these days.

Last week I teased (or maybe it was more like "threatened") that a new fan fiction was coming here on the blog. Well, next week, it arrives.
It features the 12th Doctor (which is a neat trick to pull off without having him say "kidneys" all the time). The Doctor has a new face but an old foe is causing trouble with time itself. And Clara Oswald and the denizens of Coal Hill School are caught in the middle of time gone mad.
Be here in one week for Episode One of...

It Came Thru Bruce Wayne's Window #7
Hi there! Dave-El here and welcome to I'm So Glad My Suffering Amuses You, the blog that is to the internet what Ariana
Grande is to oil refineries.
I really have NO idea what that means.
Today is Thursday and that means it's time for another installment of It Came Thru Bruce Wayne's Window, a look at multiple variations on how Bruce Wayne came to confront his destiny as a crimefighter while sitting by a window in stately Wayne Manor.
OK, to be blunt, this feature has been, how can I put this? Stupid? Yeah, stupid. Making fun of this seminal moment in such an important heroic mythology. I should be ashamed of myself.
Really, I should.
So what's up today, then?
OK, why not a jellyfish? I mean, think about it! It has vicious stings and nobody but nobody would be expecting to be attacked by one in downtown Gotham. Consider the element of surprise!
Fine. FINE!
Next week in It Came Thru Bruce Wayne's Window, we will see the true sign of Bruce Wayne's destiny come to light as (at last!) a BAT comes through Bruce's window.
Seriously, a bat. I'm not lying to you.
Until then, be good to one another.

Comics Blah Blah Comics: The Man of Steel One Year Post Mortem
Last summer 2013 saw the release of Man of Steel, a massive relaunch of Superman as a film franchise. You can read here and here what I had to say about this movie. Overall, my view of this film was for the most part positive. A year later, have I changed my opinion about Man of Steel?
I will stand by my earlier compliments of Man of Steel which quite effusively espoused that this was the best Superman movie ever.
Likewise, I still stand by my misgivings of the movie, specifically the wide spread loss of life and a lack of what I saw as a proper acknowledgement of that carnage by the title character.
I'm still OK with the decision to have Superman kill General Zod at the end, despite the howls of outrage by Superman purists who insisted that Superman does not kill. Guys and gals, that's a comic book conceit but it doesn't work in a movie context. No, Superman should not be the Super-Punisher who starts zapping bad guys into ash or smashing them to powder. Superman should have a code against killing but if that code and his adherence to it are never challenged, what is the value of that code? In the context of the movie, Superman was pressed to do the unthinkable and now has the weight of that action on his shoulders.
There are fans and comic bloggers who continue to mine this meme for more outrage and snarkery. I've seen fan art strips of Superman solving the most mundane problems via neck snapping. Jimmy Olsen won't leave him the hell alone because of that damn signal watch? Snap Jimmy's neck! Problem solved!
As I said then and I still believe now, Man of Steel is the best Superman movie so far. But that is the proverbial damning with faint praise. There were things I did not care for.
But there was stuff I liked a lot.
So another Superman movie is in the works and here is a publicity still from it.

It looks like gloom and doom will still be players in the next film. But the main thing that has piqued everyone's interest is that Superman will not be the only super hero in the sequel.
Batman is coming! And boy are the feelings mixed about that! On one hand, fan boys are giddy at the prospect of the Man of Steel and the Dark Knight going mano e mano, maybe riffing on Frank Miller's ground breaking work.
On the other hand, Batman is going to portrayed by Ben Affleck. If you want, click here about what I thought about THAT but the short version is, I think he's going to be OK.
But then other stuff keeps piling on the movie. Wonder Woman's in it! Maybe Aquaman? Cyborg! And how many villians? Three!
Now all of THAT is what I'm worried about. Take a look at the successful super hero film franchises and where do the wheels go off the wagon? When there's too much stuff going on!
Sam Raimi's 3rd Spider-Man film is a textbook case of too much stuff overwhelming a movie.
X-Men: The Last Stand suffered from way too many things happening AND Brett Ratner as director.
Batman and Robin (and to a slight lesser extent, Batman Forever) sinks under the weight of excess.
Now I know Warner Bros. is anxious to build a movie empire around the characters they own via DC Comics...excuse me, DC Entertainment. And Warner execs are just salivating like crazy to get a hold of some of the Disney/Avengers money.
But shoehorning a Justice League movie into their next Superman film has the makings of a disaster written all over it. Marvel let the pot simmer with Iron Man, Thor and Captain America before unleashing The Avengers. But Warner Bros. may not be as patient. I imagine a lot of execs over there thought they would already be to their Justice League movie by now after the launch of the Green Lantern film.
Whoops.
Well, the future is not ours to see and maybe Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice (the title is not instilling me with confidence) will be better than expected. And with expectations so low, that may just happen.
Be good to one another.

As I said then and I still believe now, Man of Steel is the best Superman movie so far. But that is the proverbial damning with faint praise. There were things I did not care for.
- I wish there more lighter moments instead of what felt like a constant heavy blanket of dark foreboding over everything.
- I wish Superman had made his own decision to become a super hero instead of being forced into the open by the circumstances of an alien incursion.
- I wish Superman had expressed the same level of outrage over the deaths of civilians as he did at the death of Zod.
But there was stuff I liked a lot.
- I admired the messy political and cultural landscape of a doomed Krypton.
- I was moved by the flashbacks to a young Clark terrified as his powers begin to develop.
- I liked that Lois Lane was portrayed as smart enough to track down Superman to a farm in Kansas and her role as a partner to Clark Kent.
- While the carnage was too over the top, there is no denying this was a Superman who did super things.
- And oh yeah: the cape! I am a sucker for dramatic cape action and damned this movie delivered.
So another Superman movie is in the works and here is a publicity still from it.

It looks like gloom and doom will still be players in the next film. But the main thing that has piqued everyone's interest is that Superman will not be the only super hero in the sequel.

Random Stupidity
Hi there! Dave-El here and welcome to I'm So Glad My Suffering Amuses You, the blog that asks the question, "Have you ever been mellow? Well, have you, punk?!"
Ah, nothing like mixing the mellow gold of Olivia Newton-John with Clint Eastwood's Dirty Harry, huh?
Today's post is some random stupidity from various Tweets from my Twitter feed (which can be found here).
I'm not sure what brought this on but I had this random bad pun that I just had to get out of my system.
What do you call a funny Star Trek villain made out of sand?
Silly Kahn!
*beat*
Get it? Silly... *beat* Kahn?
*beat*
Hello,is this thing on?
As is my want, I tried to turn this bad pun/joke thingy into a franchise of other bad jokes based on sci-fi stuff.
Did you hear an old enemy on Doctor Who is opening up a fishing supply business?
It's called Master Bait!
*beat*
C'mon, that's.. funny...ish
What do you call a show about cloning experiments at a women's prison?
Orange Is The New Orphan Black!
*beat*
C'mon, that..
*beat*
...bugger!
What do you get when you cross a frog with a Jedi?
Star Warts!
*beat*
You see, you add a "t" to Star Wars and... *beat*
...never mind.
Now that last one, that may have a shot at getting into Highlights For Children, right?
Even more out of left field were a series of Tweets I posted on the subject of secret body parts. The first one, "goozle", was a word I heard used by mom and other grown ups when I was a child in southeastern North Carolina. Most commonly used in the following sentences:
Occasionally, I'll let the word "goozle" slip into my vernacular but nobody seems to know what I'm talking about. Apparently the goozle is a secret body part and only a few pockets of humanity (such as in southeastern North Carolina) knows about it.
So under a hashtag of #SecretBodyParts, I began to post a list of 9 other heretofore unknown parts of the human body.

- "That warmed my goozle." A good kind of warming brought on by soup or hot chocolate.
- "That burned my goozle." A bad side effect of something being too hot or too spicy.
Occasionally, I'll let the word "goozle" slip into my vernacular but nobody seems to know what I'm talking about. Apparently the goozle is a secret body part and only a few pockets of humanity (such as in southeastern North Carolina) knows about it.

Top Ten List of #SecretBodyParts
- Goozle
- Riggler
- Upper Gwernk and Lower Gwernk (connects the Goozle to the Riggler)
- Schnark (men only)
- Schleckendoint
- Schleckendoink (similar to the Schleckendoint but only occurs in 17% of the population)
- Floobie (women only)
- Woobie (women only, secretes mucous that lubricates the Floobie)
- Farkenlarken (inert until adolescence)
- The Brain (optional)
Oh, that last one, ain't I the clever and/or snarky guy.
I tend to use "schleckendoink" mostly in the winter; for example, "It's cold enough out here to freeze my schleckendoink off."
Unlike the goozle (which I assume is somewhere in the chestular area) and the brain (it could be anywhere but for guys, it's somewhere in our pants), all the other terms are less specifically defined. Why? Because I am not a trained specialist in human biology, that's why.
