Robert Mueller

Robert Mueller passed away on Friday at age 81.

Mueller was a decorated American war hero and a  director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.  Over the course of his career, Mueller took on the brutal autocratic Panamanian leader Manuel Noriega, the Gambino crime family boss John Gotti, and the terrorists behind the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland.

Regarding Robert Mueller's military service in Vietnam, he had a knee problem that would've kept him out of the war but he chose to serve anyway.

Generally regarded as a professional and dedicated public servant, Robert Mueller was nearly universally regarded as a good and honorable man.

Why only "nearly"?

Well, there is that matter of Mueller being the point man for the investigation into possible collusion between Russia and Donald Trump's campaign.

So, gee, how did Li'l Donnie Trump handle news of the passing of Robert Mueller?

Like this:

“Robert Mueller just died. Good, I’m glad he’s dead. He can no longer hurt innocent people!”

No, I am not paraphrasing.  The man who currently holds the title of President of the United States said of an American citizen, "I'm glad he's dead."

Regarding the investigation into reported shenanigans between Trump's team and the Russians:

  • Robert Mueller did not ask for or start this investigation. It was assigned to him.
  • Mueller never said anything bad about Donald Trump. In fact, he said nothing during the course of the nearly 2 year investigation with no leaks and no public comments. Mueller ran a tight ship and just hunkered down to follow the facts wherever they would lead.
  • While the investigation did lead to some people in Trump's orbit facing criminal charges and doing some jail time, Donald himself remain untouched.

Click here and here  for my humble and admiittedly limited understanding of Mueller's probe.

Long story made short:

  • Robert Mueller looked around.
  • Robert Mueller found nothing.
  • Robert Mueller got on with his life.

A few years ago, Mueller was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease which he had to struggle with until he died on Friday.

Meanwhile, widdle Commander Bone Spurs is not one to let  a petty grievance slide.

I think it bears repeating what Trump said.

“Robert Mueller just died. Good, I’m glad he’s dead. He can no longer hurt innocent people!”

Oddly enough, I think I owe Donald Trump a debt of gratitude.

I've wondered how exactly I will articulate my response when this goddam motherfucker finally dies and Li' Donnie his own damn self has given me the words to express myself.

So on that blessed day when that last McDonald's cheeseburger tightens it's grip on his calcified heart and the Devil finally calls in on his deal, I know just what I will say:

“Donald Trump just died. Good, I’m glad he’s dead. He can no longer hurt innocent people!”

Thank you, Donald, for the gift of your words.

When you die, I will just cut 'n' paste that into a blog post and get on with my life.

Après La Coloscopie

The title of today's post is "Après La Coloscopie".

Which is my report after I had my colonoscopy on what that procedure was like for me.

I put the title in French to make the topic more enticing.

The journey to my appointment with the endocronologist on Friday, January 9th, began the week before.

Normally I take my weekly injection of my Tirzepatide (for A1C and weight loss) on Friday night.  Part of my instructions was to not take that shot within 7 days of the colonoscopy.

When I took my first Tirzepatide shot back in March, it felt so weird. Now after several months of taking the shot every Friday, it felt weird NOT doing it.

Starting on January 4th, I had been instructed to cut out certain foods from my diet, especially corn and peanuts.  So I had to forego my favorite healthy snack, my trail mix of nuts and raisins.

I also had to take a drug called Lisness which is a kind of laxative.

On January 8th, the day before the procedure, I had to cut out all solid foods in the 24 hours before the procedure.  Since the colonoscopy was scheduled for 10 AM on Friday, my window for solid food ended at 10 AM Thursday.  My farewell to solid food was a sausage and egg McMuffin from McDonald's.

Hey, I like what I like and it was what I wanted.

Starting at 10 AM, it was all green jello, lemon ice cups, apple juice and Sprite.

At 6 PM on Thursday is when the real fun began.

I had to drink a concoction called GoLytely.

OK, that's Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly from Breakfast At Tiffany's.

It is NOT the same thing.

GoLytely is a bitter, salty liquid that I had drink in 8 oz. amounts every 15 minutes for 2 hours. The purpose of this rancid concoction is to clear out my colon of everything.

Repeatedly.

I passed the time working crossword puzzles and catching up on comic book reading. It was actually not  a bad way to while away the evening hours except for the frequent horror that was exploding from my posterior like a goddam Old Faithful of crap!

I was physically and mentally exhausted but there was no sleep to come that night.

At 4 AM, I had to get up and finish consuming the GoLytely until the solution was finished and what was coming out of me was pale yellow or clear.

Andrea drove me to the appointment for my 9 AM check in. God bless my wife for getting up to drive me to and from this appointment. I love her and appreciate her efforts to help me but...

Dear Lord, her driving frightens me!

The moment I've been preparing for arrives as I am led inside the facility where the procedure will take place.

I have to undress completely except for my socks. Then I put on one of those god awful hospital gowns that open in the back, lay on the bed and awaited my fate.

I tried to relax but all I could think about was how much I wanted to go to the bathroom even though I just went before I undressed and got on the table. I was told this was normal.

I was introduced to my anathesiologist.  I asked if I needed to call her Dr. Thesiologist or can I just call her Anna?

She said her name was Stacey.

She either didn't get the joke or I was the 500th person to make the same joke that week alone.

My bed was wheeled into the room where the procedure would take place. I was rolled over on my side like a sack of potatoes.

Drugs oozed through the IV into my arm and I have no idea when I went to sleep and no idea of the endoscope being inserted into my backside.

I do know when I woke up.

Just before the endoscope was removed from out of my backside. Yikes! I woke up too early. But it was all good. I was chill and copacetic, no pain, no discomfort.

I hope the aliens got what they needed from my anal probing.

I for one welcome our anal probing alien overlords.

Ooh boy! Here's photographic evidence of my colon!

Yikes!

I promise to never post that again on my blog.

Eventually I gathered my wits about me which is an unusual occurrence for me as my wits are frequently ungathered on the best of days.

I carefully got dressed again and joined my wife in a recovery room to await a report from my doctor.

They did find a single small polyp and removed it. As I write this, I am awaiting results of the biopsy.*

Andrea who is normally hyper paranoid about this sort of thing was remarkably level headed about this. I fully expected her to go to worst case scenario and cry,"OH MY GOD! YOU HAVE A TUMOR AND YOU'RE GONNA DIE!!!"

Then Andea drove us home where I crashed hard into a coma-like nap for a few hours.

And this is where I am après la coloscopie.

*AMENDED: Tuesday afternoon my doctor called with the news that the polyp was benign and not cancerous.

And I will need to do this again in 7 years.

So I've got that to live for.

Someone Stole My McDonald's

Sunday was the first pool day of the summer for the Dave-El family.

Despite my fervent hopes for a thunderstorm or that the "heat dome" settling over the United States would make things TOO hot!

I don't like going to the pool.

There's too much work to get ready to go to the pool and too many risks once we get there.

  • Will there be somewhere to park?
  • Will there be a line?
  • How long will it take to get through the line?
  • Will I apply insufficient sun screen and get roasted like a rotissierie chicken?
  • Will there be too many frickin' kids?

And so on and so on and...

Yeah, I'm grumpy. It's part of my character.

No, being grumpy IS my character.

Wife Andrea, son Dean and friend Jan were happy to be there.'

I... tolerated the existence of the pool.

My mood for going to the pool was not helped by the events before we left the Fortress of Ineptitude.

Where someone stole my McDonald's order.

So here's how that went down.

I put in an order for the 4 of us through the McDonald's app.

I completed the order and got a confirmation code: AJ74.

I left to pick up the order with Dean and Jan as my wingmennuts. I drove up and a worker asked me if I was using the McDonald's app today and said yes and gave my code, AJ74.

McD worker: "What?"

Me: "The code is AJ74."

McD worker: "Are you sure it's for this location?"

Checked my app.

Me: "Yes, it is."

McD worker: "What name is the order under?"

Me: "David."

McD worker: "..."

2nd McD worker: "Could you drive around to the first window please?"

So this guy (a manager person I presume) explains that someone named David had claimed my order 2 minutes prior.

Now I get that there are millions of people in this world named "David" but how did he get my food without my AJ74 code.

Manager guy said they acted like they didn't know it.

No, I don't get that either.

Look, there are other ways to confirm an order through the app if someone "acts like they don't know it". Like confirming "What did you order?"

There are holes in this plot.

Anyway, the manager took down the order again, on paper since he couldn't put it in the system without charging us again. And he told us to pull up to the 2nd window.

One of the 4 orders was for 10 piece chicken nuggets.

At the 2nd window, a worker hands us a single bag of 10 piece chicken McNuggets:  "Here's your order."

I noted my order was more food than that.

This was greeted by this guy and everyone else with multiple utterance of "What?"

We were instructed to move up to the one of the waiting spaces where we... waited for our order to be completed.

Which included another order of 10 piece child McNuggets.

McDonald's was having an existential crisis.

Later we finally made it to the pool and my nose got sunburned.

And I'm so glad my suffering amuses you.

Melania's Hat

Of all the things to be worried about from Donald Trump's return to the White House as (Shudder!) "President", I've decided to focus on Melania's Hat.

It seemed... familiar somehow.

Oh yeah! I get it now!

The McDonald's Hamburglar!

It seemed an odd sartorial choice but then....

The hat served a practical function of deflecting unwanted attention from a certain convicted felon.

Which explains Melania's hat.

As for Li'l Donnie, well, that's a whole other thing and well...

It's not good.

We all may need to start wearing Melania's Hat.

More on dour, divisive Donnie tomorrow.

Snowfall In Greensboro

Snow came to the Fortress of Ineptitude and the surrounding environs of Greensboro this past weekend.

Big thick snow flakes began swirling in Friday afternoon and by the end of the day, our car and front lawn was covered in snow up to 2 or 3 inches deep.

I have photographic evidence of snow here at the Fortress but I will not be sharing it here on the blog. My phone underwent a software upgrade to make my phone "better" and my life "easier" but now I can't figure out how to frickin' email my photos to my computer.

It's a case of OPEDC.  Old Person Electronic Device Confusion.

So I googled "Greensboro Snow 2025" and got this photo.

Per the breathless proclamations of the local news media, I did not venture anywhere in my car.  Normally the weekend is when Andrea and I dine out or I get take out. Instead I wound up cooking our meals for Friday and Saturday.

Friday was supposed to be our monthly Cracker Barrel Fish Fry.  We were really looking forward to that.

Saturday morning, I went all out with a full breakfast, frying up sausage, scrambling eggs as well as cooking grits and French toast sticks. My personal assessment: it was... tolerable.

By Sunday, I couldn't take it anymore and had to get out of the house, venturing out to Cook Out and McDonald's.

Andrea had a cold or sinus problems on Sunday so dining out was not an option.

While googling photos of the local snowfall, I came across this picture.

Some dude proposing to his girlfriend in the snow.

Which I suppose is romantic as all get out.  Like the climatic scene from a Hallmark Christmas movie or something.

Hey guy, thanks for setting the bar so high and making life hard for the rest of us.  Women all getting squishy at the thought of a proposal in the falling snow and men thinking "Ah jeez! We gotta do what now for a big romantic gesture?"

Well, we had our big snowfall and I hope by the time this posts, it's mostly gone away.

And stays away.

This Friday is supposed to be our monthly Cracker Barrel Fish Fry.  We are really looking forward to that.

President Elon Musk

In Doctor Who, you know someone is possessed by the deadly Vashta Narata if that person gets a second shadow.

Donald Trump has a 2nd shadow but it's not the Vashta Narata.

It's worse.

It's Elon Musk.

Well, who can blame the guy for hanging around? Elon spent a quarter of a billion dollars to get Li'l Donnie re-elected and damn it, he wants to be sure he gets a return on that investment.

Which has seen Elon Musk getting out ahead of Donald Trump on a variety of policy issues.

For example, the US government was facing one of those ubiquitous moments where the government was going to run out of money unless Congress passes a budget.  Just ahead of the Friday December 20th deadline, Congress had hammered out a bipartisan deal that would keep the government running.

Then Elon Musk tweeted that the bill was a bad idea and Republicans should not take that deal.

After that, Donald Trump awoke from his KFC/McDonald's induced stupor to make a demand that Republicans should do a a different deal or just let the government shut down.

Donald Trump is NOT President yet and Elon Musk is just a persistent stooge who will not get the fuck out of Mar O Lago.

But Republicans are so immediately hardwired to do whatever their beloved der Führer says, they began running around like heads with their chickens cut off, confused as to what to do.

Even if there is some confusion on which man is der Führer: Donald Trump and Elon Musk.

Both men were cajoling and threatening members of Congress to torpedo the bipartisan budget deal. An allegedly more Trump/Musk friendly budget was cobbled together but it couldn't get full Republican support and the Democrats were sure as hell not going to vote for it.

Congress did finally pass a budget bill mere hours before the government faced a shut down.

A resounding defeat for Donald Trump. Or Elon Musk?

I'm sorry, which one of these guys is going to be President again?

Oh shit! We've got 4 more years of this!

Doing Time At McDonald's

Way back in the day when I was a much younger Dave-El, I did my time working for McDonald’s.

It was admittedly not a long time.  I worked about 2 weeks.

A presumed gig working at a local radio station did not pan out while I was on break from college one summer.

I had to find something somewhere to earn some pocket money before the fall semester and that quest led me to a McDonald’s.

It wasn’t near my home, almost an hour’s drive.

Really? I couldn’t find a McDonald’s closer than that?

It’s been more than a few years and my memory’s a little fuzzy on the details.

It was hard, hot, sweaty work but I might’ve endured it longer than I did except for that stupidly long commute.

Current Democratic candidate for President Kamala Harris did her own time working at McDonald’s while she was in college.

And current Republican candidate for President Donald Trump refuses to believe Harris ever worked at McDonald’s.

But now he has worked at McDonald’s.

Kind of.

Sort of.

Not really.

OK, sparky, here’s the deal.

A McDonald’s in Pennsylvania shut down for the day.

Trump supporters were brought in to play the part of customers going through the drive through.

There was a rehearsal for those supporters going through the drive through before Li’l Donnie showed up.

Then Donald Trump shows up in his usual suit and tie.  He says he wants to work the “fry counter”.

He puts some fries in the fryer, he boxes up some fries and then distributes food to the “customers”.

This takes about fifteen minutes.

Donald brags that he worked at McDonald’s 15 minutes longer than Kamala ever did.

As a person who worked in a  McDonald’s 2 weeks (less 15 minutes) more than you, I’m not sure I would call what you did as work, Donnie.

  • Try working that damn French Fry deep fryer for longer stretches of time.
  • During a lunch rush.
  • With a bunch of customers who have not been pre-vetted wanting different things.

I'm not sure what the McDonald's photo op was supposed to do.  It doesn't prove that Kamala Harris did NOT work at McDonald's.

I suppose it bolsters Li'l Donnie's appeal to the little people he is supposed to be the champion of.

Except when someone asked if he supported increasing the minimum wage, he did what he does with all questions relating to policy that might actually help people: he didn't answer it.

I mean, he said stuff that had nothing to do with wages, minimum or otherwise.

Standard operating procedure when it comes to Donald Trump.

Wearing a McDonald's apron for 15 minutes changes nothing.

Tuesday TV Touchbase: Ahsoka, Quantum Leap and Loki

Before we kick off this week's Tuesday TV Touchbase, I was completely bummed out hear that Suzanne Somers died on Sunday at the age of 76.

Somers hit the big time in Three’s Company in the late ’70s and later starred in the blended family sit com Step By Step in the ’90s.

Well, this sucks!

(The wrong people keep dying.)

Today's Tuesday TV Touchbase takes on adventures in SPACE and TIME!

Let's start off with... SPACE!!!

So Andrea and I finished the (first? last?) season of the Star Wars series Ahsoka.  We had muddled through the season without the wisdom and knowledge provided by the animated series Star Wars Rebels and Star Wars: The Clone Wars that came before.

Look, we were here for David Tennant who provides the voice of the droid Huyang. Tennant is perfectly adorable as the cantankerous old droid who has been building light sabers and training Jedi for centuries.

Backstory? Ha! I scoff in your general direction! Who needs backstory?

Well...

A whole bunch of shit went down in the 8th episode that was targeted to the Star Wars fan base faithful.

In the galaxy farther, farther away....

Morgan Elsbeth is gifted Mother Talzin's sword by the Great Mothers. It's not a light saber but a regular sword that crackles with a green fiery energy. It's kind of sinister and looks cool.

While Huyang hangs back to fix Ahsoka's ship, Ahsoka, Sabine and Ezra Bridger book it back to the Grand Admiral Thrawn's ship to keep him from returning to their home galaxy. (The one that is far, far away and not farther, farther away.)

Thrawn's goons have spent 3 episodes loading his ship with... well, something important. I'm not sure what. Maybe the Rebels and Clone Wars fans have a clue.

Our trio fights against Night Troopers who are storm troopers who have been killed but keep fighting anyway. Yep, zombie troopers!

Ahsoka goes one on one against Elsbeth and after a heated battle of light sabers vs. fiery green magic sword, Elsbeth gets killed.

Sabine stays behind to help Ahsoka while Ezra Bridger makes it on to Thrawn's ship just before it makes the super duper jump to hyperspace back home and Ahsoka has fuck all in the way of trying to follow the bastard.

The one mission made clear repeatedly since episode one was to make sure Thrawn does NOT escape his exile from the galaxy farther, farther away.  Well, that did not work out at all as planned.

Thrawn and the Great Mothers park themselves over the planet Dathomir which I gather is a big deal.

Ezra Bridger reunites with General Syndulla and her droid Chopper and this seems to be a really big deal.

I DON'T GET IT!

Back in the galaxy farther, farther away, Ahosoka, Sabine and Huyang are stuck on a planet with these alien dudes I call "turtle bugs".

While Anakin Skywalker's force ghosts stands watch over them and...

What the hell? THIS is where we end this?!?

What kind of Empire Strikes Back bullshit is this?!?! The bad guys win and the good guys are stuck? Really?!?!

Lesson learned: we can't just follow David Tennant to anything he's in without doing the homework first.

Next up is an adventure in TIME with the 2nd season return of Quantum Leap.

How exactly are we getting new episodes of this show when every other scripted program is dead in the water? NBC made a quick renewal of the show early on which gave the cast and crew to put away about a half dozen episodes before the writer and actor strikes began.

Anyway, season two of Quantum Leap begins with a change to the status quo. While for Ben a mere matter of hours has elapsed from his last leap to his next, in his future, things progressed differently. It seems Project Quantum Leap lost track of Ben Song and the government shut down the project, declaring Ben dead.

It's been THREE years before Ian finally finds Ben again.  Ian swears they found Ben through dumb luck from a computer program they left running at the project. But it appears Ian may be up to sketchy shit.  Mason Alexander Park is still endearingly adorkable as every and I don't want to see Ian get in trouble over this.

Meanwhile Addison has found love with some new guy named Tony who seems like a really nice guy and everything but damn it, she was just engaged to Ben a few minutes ago although for her it's been 3 years but still...  DAMN IT!!!

Meanwhile, Ben is still leaping across time, life to life, putting right whatever went wrong. And like Sam Beckett before him, perhaps with no end in sight.

Meanwhile, we play around with TIME in the 2nd season premiere of Loki.

You know I was complaining earlier about how some stuff with Ahsoka didn't quite make sense because I wasn't there for the backstory.

So I was there for the backstory for Loki and so far. what the hell is going on with season 2? Has my brain gotten too old to keep track of a classic "time has fractured" plot?

Take a deep breath, Dave-El. You can do this.

Plot summary for Loki Season 2: Time is fucked.

Well, my work here is done!

OK, one more thing: a big old shout out to Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All At Once) who joins the cast as TVA technician Ouroboros ("O.B."), a wonderfully eccentric science dude enhanced by Quan's perfect comedic timing.

By the way, Loki is looking for Sylvie and finds her working for a McDonald's in 1982.

Side note: I worked for a McDonald's for a few weeks in the summer of 1982. Seeing Sylvia in that god awful brown polyester uniform brought back some PTSD.

To be honest, the bloom is a bit off the rose for me in terms of the Marvel Cinematic Universe but Loki is enough of it's own strange thing to keep me interested. For now.

Next week, Our Flag Means Death.

Until next time, remember to be good to one another and try to keep it down in there, would ya? I'm trying to watch TV over here.

Throwback Thursday: The Free McDonald's Mystery Pie

OK, I'm tired, frazzled and unable to string....

...words....

....together.

Re-run time! Let's go back to a classic post from

Saturday, January 24, 2015 called...

The Free McDonald's Mystery Pie

On Monday, January 19th, my daughter and I made a quick run to McDonald's to get some lunch. There was a sign on the drive thru menu that said "Free Holiday Pie with each order of a McCafe drink." I was getting my wife a McSmoothie (made with McPineapple and McMango) so what the hell, we got a free pie.

But what KIND of pie was it?

Well, that was kind of a mystery. Or a McMystery, if you will.

David: Look what we got at McDonald's!
Andrea: What is it?
Randie: It's a free pie!

Andrea: What kind of pie is it?
Randie: It's a baked pie!
Andrea: I mean, what type of pie?
David: It's a baked pie. It's right there on the box!
Andrea: I mean, what's IN the pie?
Randie: Er, flavor?
Andrea: What kind of flavor?
David: Flavor...flavored?
Randie: Whatever it is, it's bursting with it.
David: Also baked with love.
Andrea: But what KIND of pie is it?
Randie and David: BAKED PIE!
Andrea (sigh): I just wanted to know what's in the pie!
Randie: Flavor and love, Mom.
Andrea: I give up.

In case you're wondering what was really inside the pie, it was custard.

What kind of custard?

Er, custard flavored custard?

You all be good to one another. And may your days be filled with flavor and baked with love.

A Winter's Tale: The Aftermath

As I wrote in last week's post, "we're looking at another winter weather system moving in this weekend that, as I write this, is expected to produce some mild flurries or will bury our corpses until the spring thaw."

Well, winter weather did hit us this past weekend and here is a look at it outside our front door at the Fortress of Ineptitude.

We got about 4 inches of snow early Sunday morning followed by a continual glaze of sleet and ice to hold that snow in place.

And a lot of wind though nowhere near as forceful as we endured a few weeks back.

Three hours to our east, daughter Randie dealt with brutal cold temperatures but no snow, just freezing rain.

Here at the Fortress,  we had more than sufficient supplies of food to sustain Andrea and I here at the Fortress and also the power stayed on so that was most fortunate as well.

Also always the case when I'm snowed in, even with sufficient amounts and diversity of things to eat, I had an incredible craving for a double pound cheeseburger from McDonald's.

Working from home means no longer having the luxury of a snow day. Hazardous driving conditions don't mean squat when you don't have to drive to your job.

I did have Monday off but that was due to it being MLK Day. My wife's job does not take time off for MLK Day.

I spent my day off watching The Librarians and some Gilmore Girls (alas, no Law & Order) and reading one of the books that Andrea got me for Christmas. (The Stan Lee biography called True Believer of which there will be a blog post about sometime in the future.)

Tuesday saw all our snow still frozen under an icy glaze but it was time for me to get back to work. With 2 hours of overtime no less.)

With temperatures not expected to get much above freezing for the rest of this week,  our snow frozen under an icy glaze isn't going away for awhile.

Which is a damn shame.

'Cause I'm ready to kill for a double pound cheeseburger from McDonald's.

And I'm so glad my suffering amuses you.

Enemies Of America

As you know, whenever I write a post about Donald Trump, there is a sacred screed that I include in virtually every one of these posts.   A...
