TV Update: Santa Clarita Diet, Killing Eve, Jeopardy and More!

Every year, I make the same resolution: to watch more television.

Whenever possible, I like to try and keep that resolution.

Although season 3 dropped almost a month ago, I was only just this weekend able to get to a couple of the new episodes of Santa Clarita Diet.  This series tracks the lives of Joel and Sheila Hammond, everyday suburban real estate agents in Santa Clarita, CA who are just trying to get by and live their best life even though Sheila is an undead being who must feast on human flesh.

Sheriff's deputy Ann has discovered that Sheila is an undead being. Ann thinks Sheila is on a mission from god to smite the wicked. Ann does not know that Sheila's smiting the wicked because she's hungry.

Also there is an ancient sect of knights from Serbia whose mission is to hunt down and destroy undead beings.

Oh, and the Nazi softball league that Sheila was using as her "lobster tank" has gotten wise that someone is picking off their members.

Joel is, as usual, under a lot of stress.

Heading into season 3, I'm still laughing out loud at the exploits of the Hammonds. This is an hilariously funny show. I still have to fast feed through Sheila's feeding frenzies because that is some gross and very disgusting shit.

I'm also following season 2 of Killing Eve. Eve is not quite herself after stabbing Villanelle in the finale of season 2.  After firing Eve last season, Carolyn has recruited Eve back into MI6 again. As of episode 2, Carolyn doesn't know about Eve stabbing Villanelle.

Meanwhile, Villanelle is not quite herself after being stabbed by Eve in the finale of season 2. Villanelle spends episode 1 in a hospital, recovering from her stabbing. After escaping from the hospital, she spends episode 2 with a strange man who is intent on keeping her a prisoner in his home with his creepy collection of dolls and his dementia afflicted mother.

Killing Eve is a spy series and a murder mystery but its off kilter style provides for a lot of humor.  Sandra Oh is remarkable as Eve, trying to hold herself together under bizarre circumstances. Jodie Comer is a virtual emotional chameleon, shifting gears as Villanelle plots, schemes and manipulates (and, oh yes, murders) her way back to her old life of plotting, scheming, manipulating and murdering but her on her own terms.

I have been keeping up with Jeopardy lately, following the explosive performances of contestant James Holzhauer; over a 12 day run, his winnings total $851,926! There's been a lot of focus on Holzhauer's ballsy style of starting with the larger dollar amounts at the bottom of the categories and make big bets when he frequently finds the Daily Doubles.  But what really blows my mind is he just knows so much stuff. When he buzzes in, he is almost inevitably right.

This weekend, Andrea, Randie and I caught a couple of colorized episodes of I Love Lucy.  Lucille Ball was brilliant at landing a punchline as well as physical comedy and these two episodes were a perfect showcase for her talents. Both episodes had themes around money and the quest to get more of it. In the first episode, it's a bit off putting how Ricky gets all snarky and threatening with Lucy about her getting overdrawn at the bank and he does this at dinner with guests. I suppose we're supposes to excuse this on "Well, it was the 1950's" or something but I felt a bit uncomfortable. Yes, Ricky, Lucy should mind her budget better and you two should have a conversation. Being snarky about it and in front of guests, that's just two kinds of wrong.

Saturday, we watched Avengers: Infinity War in preparation for next weekend's Avengers: Endgame. We resolved we would not pause the movie or get up from our chairs so that we could endurance train for next weekend's 182 minute Marvel marathon.
