Tuesday TV Touchbase: Jeopardy, The Orville, Scorpion and Shark Trek

Jeopardy

Dr. Sanjay Gupta finished up his run as Jeopardy guest host last week. My wife Andrea liked him as host; she's long been a fan of his medical expertise combined with his personable charm, qualities that were much appreciated during his CNN appearances during the pandemic.

Objectively, I concur with Andrea's assessment of Dr. Sanjay Gupta and I found his time behind the Jeopardy lectern to be quite satisfactory.  Subjectively, I don't see Dr. Gupta as the right fit as an ongoing host.

Despite strong and compelling turns by Mayim Bialik and Buzzy Cohen and what I hope will be a strong performance by Levar Burton, I'm still rooting for Ken Jennings to get the regular gig.

The Orville

I've started my watch of the second season of The Orville. I'm only a couple of episodes into the 2nd season but I can sense a higher level of.... I'm not sure, maturity, maybe?

The show is still having fun with some of the tropes of the Star Trek universe.  You know how on Next Generation, there was always some damn Klingon ritual for Worf to perform? On the opening episode of season 2, The Orville leans into that concept when crew travels to Moclus for Bortus's Ja'loja.  Apparently, the people on Moclus only urinate once a year, it's Bortus' time and there is a ceremony for that, attended by family and close friends.

Ever wonder if people in Star Trek use the holodecks for porn? Episode 2 answers that question and the answer is "Yes, they do."

But homages to Star Trek aside, The Orville seems to be on a course to show it is it's own thing, not a mere parody of something else.

My intention after finishing season 2 of The Orville is to jump back to Justified, picking up with season 4.  There is word that Timothy Olyphant may be coming back as Raylan Givens in a new project based on Elmore Leonard's work.

And oh hell, like I need more television to watch. Channel surfing recently, I came across some reruns of a show called Scorpion that ran on CBS for 4 seasons a few years back.  The episode I saw featured a guest star turn by Lea Thompson so I was hooked for that episode. But the premise of the series is intriguing.  Scorpion is an elite crew of super geniuses who band together to fight crime.  It's CSI crossed with Big Bang Theory .

Now I think I might need to seek out more episodes of this thing.

Damn it!

Andrea and I watched the pilot episode of Scorpion and I think we now both have something to watch other than Big Bang Theory reruns.

Last night Andrea and I watched a Shark Week special on the Discovery channel called Shark Trek where this dude named Josh Gates and various shark experts go diving with sharks with William Shatner!

It's a fun and engaging special as Shatner interacts with various sharks in their natural underwater habitat. And the fact that Shatner is 90 frickin' years old and he's diving with sharks, man? Wow!

And the sharks are magnificent, beautiful creatures. One shark expert was able to induce reef sharks to calmly float in the water while their heads were being petted.  Those reef sharks reminded me of our dog Rosie when she's enjoying a good belly rub.

Andrea and I finally wrapped up The Flight Attendant. More on that in next week's Tuesday TV Touchbase.

Until next time, remember to be good to one another and try to keep it down in there, would ya? I'm trying to watch TV over here.
