Super Magic Fun Day!

This past Sunday saw Andrea and I venture forth from Fortress of Ineptitude to head back the Tanger Center in downtown Greensboro for the 2nd week in a row to take in an afternoon show called "Champions of Magic."

The  touring show featured illusionists Young & Strange, mind reader Alex McAleer, escapologist Fernando Velasco and close-up magician Kayla Drescher. The various performances are cranked up cool light effects and a kick ass soundtrack.

While Alex pulled off some incredible mind reading tricks, I found his patter to be overly verbose with a lot of elaborate explanations of what's happening.

Kayla did a trick where she "drank" a cup full of needles and then pulled them out of her mouth a connected string of needles.

Fernando did Houdini's water tank escape trick where he shows up sopping wet in the upper deck seats where Andrea and I were sitting.

Once again we are far away from the stage.

Young and Strange were consistently funny and closed the show with a kitschy tribute to the excesses of Zeigfried and Roy (sans an actual tiger but resorting to a sad dude in an ill fitting tiger suit.)

A couple of times, the cast would make some reference to the Super Bowl but as one performer wisely noted of the audience, "If they're here, the Super Bowl is not a priority."

Andrea bought these tickets months ago with no idea that the show was on Super Bowl Sunday.

The show started at 4:00 PM and we were home in time for the 2nd quarter.

As I noted on Tuesday, the game itself was actually interesting with lead changes through out the game. There was an amazing 75 yard touchdown run by the Bengals 12 seconds into the 2nd half which is way more sports detail than I usually pay attention to.

The half time show was an epic performance by hip hop and rap super stars which means it wasn't made for me. But I do know who Dr. Dre, Eminem and Snoop Dogg are.

This I imagine there were lots of old white guys staring in horror at the TV screenings wondering...

I think my favorite commercial of the night was the Rocket Mortgage ad featuring Anna Kendrick and what Barbie really has to do to get her dream house. And it features the first butch lesbian Barbie doll, House Flipper Skipper.

Worst spot? I'm going to say it was the GM ad with Mike Myers dusting off Dr. Evil again. Been there, done that, done that and done that again. Bringing back Dr. Evil over and over will never make us love you again, Mike Myers. Sorry.

OK, that was our Super Magic Fun Day Sunday!

And now for my magic trick to close this blog post, I am going to vanish before your very eyes.  Until next time, remember to be good to one another.
