Tuesday TV Touchbase: Superman & Lois

Last week, Andrea and I sat down here in the Fortress of Ineptitude to bring the 2nd season of Superman & Lois in a for a landing.

And now that's over with.

And if that indicates a less than enthusiastic response to the end of the 2nd season of Superman & Lois, well, good, that's what I was going for.

Despite the big bad for the season presenting a cosmic calamity that involved merging Earth with Bizarro Earth, the whole shenanigans of that threat were decidedly underwhelming.

Cult leader Ally Allston managed to brainwash  bunch of people including Lois' sister Lucy into believing some kind of self improvement bushwa called "the Inverse Method" which will merge the people of Earth with their other selves in another dimension (on a cube shaped Earth where people speak and spell backwards) to become.... something or another.

Basically, it's some bullshit for Ally to gain power like unto a god and yadda yadda yadda everyone dies.

Despite the threat to life and reality, the menace seems under developed. Ally herself seems unclear on what she's wanting to get out of any this.

Superman & Lois is strongest when dealing with relationships of the core cast with Clark and Lois dealing with the struggles of raising twin teenage boys which might be tough enough for normal folks but when one is super powered and doesn't know how to cope with that and the other isn't but damn well knows what he would do if he had powers, well, things get complicated.

And there's Lana Lang's family which is a mess of confusion. The sign on her desk in the Smallville Mayor's office says Lana Lang but everyone keeps calling her Mrs. Cushing (even though she's separated from her husband Kyle Cushing) while her daughter Sarah goes by the last name Cortez as part of embracing her Hispanic roots or something.  And Sarah has a younger sister Sophie who the writers keep forgetting about except for an occasional reference to "Sophie's in dance class" or something.

Despite these shenanigans, watching Lana's family navigate their various dysfunctions is far more engaging that whatever... thing Ally Allston was up to.

Some secrets get revealed this season which is a good thing. It never made sense that Clark's "best friend" Lana had no idea he was Superman so Clark finally made that right.

And Sarah knows Jordan has powers which NOW she gets why he's been acting so squirrely.

And tired of lying to her all the time, Lois Lane loops in Smallville Gazette editor Chrissy Beppo on the big secret of Clark/Superman.

I would like an explanation of why Chrissy's last name is the same as Beppo the Super Monkey from the comics.

One point of frustration with Superman & Lois was why it wasn't interacting with or even acknowledging the larger Arrowverse continuity.  Not even Superman's cousin Kara Zor-El, Supergirl, even so much as gets a mention.

In the season 2 finale, Gen. Sam Lane tells his grandsons there is a larger multiverse out there but on this world, this Earth, Superman is the only super hero.

As much as that is annoying and frustrating, since the Arrowverse seems to be sputtering towards irrelevance with the abrupt cancellations of Batwoman and Legends of Tomorrow and the forth coming final season of The Flash (and not to mention the possible demise of the CW itself), perhaps it is best that Superman & Lois is it's own thing.

The season finale teases trouble coming next year in the form of gang boss Bruno Mannheim. In the comics, Mannheim is the ruler of Intergang which is an instrument of violence and chaos in service to Darkseid.  So that bodes badly for Superman and family to enjoy any kind of peace and happiness.

Coming up on future Tuesday TV Touchbase posts?  More super hero stuff with The Boys and Umbrella Academy.  And speaking of comic book adaptations, I'm catching up on Lucifer. And we'll catch up on Star Trek: Brave New Worlds.  And apropos of nothing of that, I'm also watching the HBO Max comedy Hacks starring Jean Smart. So I'll have a few words to share about that.

And if I get Hulu back, we'll see about what's up with Only Murders in the Building and The Orville.

So much TV, so little time.

Until next time, remember to be good to one another and try to keep it down in there, would ya? I'm trying to watch TV over here.
