Tuesday TV Touchbase: Resident Alien and Other Things

For this week's Tuesday TV Touchbase, I'm bringing us up to date on where Andrea and I are up for Resident Alien.

We finished season 1 on Netflix and have started on season 2.

The people in Patience CO who know Harry Vanderspeigle is actually an alien is now up to four:

  • Max, the boy who has the genetic ability to see past Harry's human form and can only see his alien persona.
  • His friend Sahar, a devout Muslim with a solid grasp of American snark and can hold on her own with most adults
  • Asta Twelvetrees
  • Dan, Asta's dad
Oh and there is an octopus (voiced by Nathan Fillion) that Harry rescued from a seafood restaurant's aquarium, he knows too.

After grappling with his mission to Earth (Mission: KILL ALL HUMANS!) and deciding not to do that (Killing ALL humans would kill Asta and he doesn't want to do that), the octopus reminds Harry that his home planet is still on mission (Mission: KILL ALL HUMANS!) and will send someone else to finish the job.

Harry tries to thread that needle by building an underground bunker where he and Asta can survive while all the rest of the humans are killed.

Asta understandably does not like this plan.

Well, as Harry is fond of saying,

And that is not the only bullshit going on in Patience CO.

The arrow of suspicion on who murdered Sam Hodges, the previous town doctor, is now pointing at Harry Vanderspeigle. It seems that before alien Harry took over the identity of human Harry, the original human Harry Vanderspeigle was both a doctor AND an assassin.

Sheriff Mike and Deputy Liv knows there some weird going on with Harry Vanderspeigle but what?

By and by, Mike has stopped being a total dick to Liv and is working with her as a partner and not treating her as a subordinate. Mike has some dark dramatic secrets from his old pre-Colorado life that still haunt him.

Everyone in Patience CO has a sad, tragic backstory and it's amazing how much is going on in this series that does not involve the alien from outer space living in their midst.

But it's these stories that start to intrude on alien Harry's thoughts, that these humans with their sad pathetic little lives still strive for... more. Purpose. Happiness. Love.

It's enough to make an alien question is mission. (Which is... let me check my notes... Yes! KILL ALL HUMANS!)

Well, this is some bullshit!

OTHER THINGS!

Night Court had it's season 2 finale last week. Roz from the original series returns to get married to her wife in Abby Stone' courtroom. The episode was mildly funny, mostly coming from Marsha Warfield's stone cold snark that made Roz so endearing on the classic series.

We also get a bit of drama as Dan confronts what happened between him and Christine Sullivan from the original series. Markie Post who died a few years ago and sadly, Christine is also dead. Dan has an awkward encounter with Christine's sister who is mad at Dan for not going to Christine's funeral.

Night Court is on the bubble for renewal by NBC for a 3rd season. The series slightly upped it's game in the last few episodes but I hate to say it, we will not miss it if NBC opts not to renew the show.

I'm not one for watching reality TV shows but there is a series we are following called Quiet On the Set, following the ordeal of child actors who worked on shows for Nickelodeon and particularly in programs produced by Dan Schneider.

The insights about Schneider are not a surprise to me but just how much the young kids under his charge felt oppressed, abused and humiliated is just horrifying.

I'll post more in a future Touchbase after Andrea and I finish the series.

Jeopardy is in the middle of one more damn tournament, the Invitational Tournament. Various former champions have been invited back from different eras. There was one player who was a champion back in 1986. Another player who once played against Ken Jennings in a Tournament of Champions game.

We are about a week or two away from the first regular games since last June.

Meanwhile, Wheel of Fortune toddles along to Pat Sajak's retirement. Not much to report about the show itself which has done little to acknowledge this is his last season as host. And from a recent story I read, the mood behind the scenes is that Pat can't leave fast enough.

Apparently Pat Sajak is not well liked by the staff.  I understand the story may just be from some disgruntled bone picking axe grinders but for some reason I am not surprised to hear that Pat Sajak may be an asshole behind the scenes.

So what's coming up next on the Touchbase?

After a 2 week break for the NCAA Men's Basketball tournament, we're back with new episodes of Ghosts and Young Sheldon.

We've also got the return of Star Trek Discovery for it's 5th and final season.

And I've got the back half of season 2 of Invincible to catch up on.

Until next time, remember to be good to one another and try to keep it down in there, would ya? I'm trying to watch TV over here.
