In 2020, I along with millions of Americans had to face something we had not known in our lifetimes: a pandemic.
The coronavirus, COVID 19, was sweeping the globe and leaving a trail of death wherever it went.
There were common sense options to resist the spread of this incidious disease such as keeping our distance from one another and wearing masks when we could not do so.
Sadly there was a lack of consensus on these common sense steps, mostly from the political right.
- COVID 19 is not that bad.
- COVID 19 is that bad but people dying is a small price to pay to keep the economy running.
- COVID 19 is China's fault. Why should it affect us?
- COVID 19 is a fallacy created to make Donald Trump look bad.
- You can't tell me what to do: if I don't wanna wear a mask and still go to church, then you can't stop me.
A lot of stupid people said a lot of stupid things and did a lot of stupid things and despite a lot of them getting sick and dying, they still persisted in their stupidity.
Some of those incredibly stupid people are in charge of crucial government functions in Donald Trump's government.
Such as Robert F Kennedy Jr in charge of the Department of Health and Human Services.
RFK Jr is a notorious vaccine sceptic and he's in charge of the department that regulates vaccine use in the United States.
Last week, Kennedy announced that the Food and Drug Administration had approved an updated version of the coronavirus vaccine — but only for a narrow group of people that included older adults and those with certain preexisting conditions.
I've gotten the vaccine on the regular since they were first rolled out in 2021. I no longer qualify.
This decision shuts out millions of people, including healthy adults and children, from protecting themselves from severe illness.
Which by the way is still a thing. People still get sick from COVID and die from COVID. It's not as bad as it was because of coronavirus vaccines but it's happening at all owes a lot to ignorant sceptics who deny the efficacy of vaccines.
And this fucker wants to make it harder to protect ourselves.
Back in June, Kennedy fired the entire Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, the committee that recommends vaccines for the broader population.
He replaced them with vaccine skeptics.
RFK Jr has a documented history of vaccine skepticism including advocating the myth that vaccines cause autism.
Just like week while at the airport, RFK Jr went on a nonsensical ramble about how he can just look at kids and tell they're sick from mitochondrial dysfunction, a condition that has largely been discredited.
Last week, Dr. Susan Monarez, the head of the CDC, was fired because she wouldn't capitulate to Kennedy's fuckery.
The White House issued a statement that Dr, Monarez was fired because she was “not aligned with the President’s agenda.”
In a sign of protest, several other high-ranking officials also left their jobs, citing concerns about the anti-science direction the agency was taking.
Well, good for them to stand up and not roll over for the inane stupidity of Kennedy and Trump.
BUT now their positions are empty and waiting to be filled with ass kissing sycophants who will roll over for the inane stupidity of Kennedy and Trump.
Over the past several months, RFK Jr has decimated the staffing at the DHHS,the FDA and the CDC.
Which means the stage is set for a new medical emergency that we will know by the trail of it's dead.
