Not Well Wednesday

WARNING: the following post will make references to vomit, poop and Donald Trump. We're sorry.
______________________________________

Hi there. Dave-El here reporting mostly live from the deep dark inner recesses of the Fortress of Ineptitude.

I'm home with my stomach.

Which is a stupid thing to say. I'm home with all my internal organs. I tend to take them wherever I go.

I'm home because my stomach is sick and decided to ruin the party for everybody else in my body. My esophagus is particularly pissed off. "Hey buddy! When I send stuff down, you don't send it back up! Got me? This ain't no 5 star restaurant where you can send something back if you don't like it! Hey, don't gurgle at me!"

Yes, I've been throwing up and yes, I know, I know, it's gross and disgusting and you don't want to hear about it. You can tell people about almost anything related to body functions.

"I just took a shit so big, I'm able to pull my belt in another notch!"

"Damn! That's awesome! Hey, I had to vomit so much last night I..."

"Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! We don't wanna hear about that!"

Yeah, you mention throw up, vomit, hurl, upchuck, spew or whatever, people will wince. They will hear you and feel your pain about almost anything else but you mention throwing up, they're putting their hand up and protesting, "Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! We don't wanna hear about that!"

I don't wanna really want to talk about that.

So let's move on.

Yesterday's post about how Donald Trump is only the President of the parts of the USA that voted for him was rather insightful. Not that original. I'm sure others have written about this same topic.

Including me. A reader pointed out that I dealt with this same perspective back on March 20th, He's Just Not That In To You. I honestly did not mean cheat off myself; I'd forgotten I wrote it.

So look for a new post in September, Donald Trump & His Nation of Only Stupid White People.

OK, there are people out there who are PAID to do this. After being on vacation for a week, both Stephen Colbert and Seth Meyers were back with material on Trump that is really funny with lacerating honesty. One of the best written bits on what the hell is going on is Seth's A Closer Look segment.  Click here for Monday's segment on Trump pissing off the rest of the world.

It's easy to make fun of Trump.

1) Write down what he says.
2) Repeat it

Bonus if you can go to step 3.

3) Show video clip of Trump contradicting what he said.

You can also do this with Sean Spicer, KelleyAnn Conway and My Pants---DAMMIT! Mike Pence. The opportunities for hilarity basically write themselves.

OK, that's that for me. On the plus side, my tummy is starting to feel better. I may even have a sandwich.

Until next time, remember to be good to one another.

Donald Trump Is Not The President of the United States of America

Donald Trump Is Not The President of the United States of America.

Oh boo hoo. Who cares about the whining of another liberal snowflake who refuses to accept reality that Trump won the Electoral College to be President. OK, I’m not liberal nor a snowflake. As for reality, reality is a crutch for people who can’t handle drugs. But reality is what it is.

Donald Trump Is Not The President of the United States of America is not a statement of denial on my part. It is a perspective given evidential weight by Trump himself.

Meaning…?

Last week, I wrote about Trump’s two-step process for making decisions.

Step one: Ask W. W. O. D.? “WHAT WOULD Obama do?”

Step two: do the exact opposite.

As I noted at the time, the upshot of such a strategy is to appease his base, the supporters who stuck with him through the primaries and delivered the election in November. Nearly every single action and decision Li’l Donnie has made is towards this group. So to repeat:

Donald Trump Is Not The President of the United States of America.

Donald Trump Is The President of the Part of the United States of America That Voted For Him.

Li’l Donnie has taken no action that would appeal to Democrats, moderate Republicans or anyone who didn’t vote for him. This is no surprise. Li’l Donnie is a spoiled petulant man-child; if you didn’t give him any candy, why should he do anything for you?

Trump pulls out of the Paris climate accords. People in virually every demographic polled were against this action. Except one: Trump’s base. “Yeah! Trump stuck up to them furriners!”

It bears mentioning that the Paris climate accords that Obama signed on for (along with 195 other countries) are voluntary. There was nothing in the accords that made America do anything. But Trump called the accords “draconian” (Ooh! Li’l Donnie used a BIG word!) and an undue burden on our economy. Something voluntary cannot be “draconian” or “a burden” if you don’t have to do it. Pulling out of the agreement only cedes leadership to China, undermines the trust the rest of the world has in America and keeps us out of the loop of a global renewable energy economy which is where all the money and jobs are. There is literally no good reason for Trump to withdraw from this climate agreement: Donald Trump Is The President of the Part of the United States of America That Voted For Him. And that part of the USA have been suckered into thinking stuff like the climate accord is why coal mining and manufacturing jobs have gone away. Pulling out of the Paris deal is nothing more than a giant “fuck you” to the rest of America and the world and to the future. But to the Part of the United States of America That Voted For Him? “You’re welcome.”

All that matters to Li’l Donnie is holding on right now to the power that makes him The President of the Part of the United States of America That Voted For Him.

As Trump noted last week when he made his big announcement that he was elected to serve the people of Pittsburgh, not Paris. Does Li’l Donnie really think the Paris climate agreement is designed to just make the weather over the Eiffel Tower nicer? By the way, Pittsburgh took exception to Trump’s name check. “Uh, keep us out of this, OK? Don’t use our name; people might think we’re together or something. Ugh.”

But look at everything else Trump has done which underscores that Donald Trump Is Not The President of the United States of America.

  • Travel ban on Muslims? Nobody likes it except for one group: the Part of the United States of America That Voted For Him.
  • The Obamacare repeal? Nobody likes it except for one group: the Part of the United States of America That Voted For Him. Even though this group is going to be hit the hardest by an Obamacare repeal. But these morons have been indoctrinated that Obamacare is evil and by God, trump said he would repeal it. Yep, the replacement bill is a poor shadow of Trump’s health care promises but that’s just liberals and the “fake news” of the mainstream media. So if the new deal dies on the vine in the Senate, Trump can still point to a victory of getting a bill through the House. Not his fault if others didn’t carry the ball.
  • Trump’s budget proposal? Nobody likes it except for one group: the Part of the United States of America That Voted For Him. Even though this group is going to be hit the hardest by his proposed budget cuts. But dammit, the government is too big and by gum, Trump said he would cut it down to size.

And I could keep going on and on and on but my fingers are getting tired. But Trump has been consistent in this:if it helps him to look good to the Part of the United States of America That Voted For Him, he could give fuck all about everyone else. From Li’l Donnie’s selfish perspective, he has no motivation to be President of the United States of America. Donald Trump is only interested in being the President of the Part of the United States of America That Voted For Him.

Wonder Woman

Yesterday, we went forth from the Fortress of Ineptitude to go see Wonder Woman. We actually ran into a problem we rarely run into: the showing when went to see was sold out. In this age of multiple movie theaters with multiple screens, that almost never happens. The next showing was in a theater with recliners for seats; yep, those recliner seats cost extra but damn their comfy. Lean back and pull up the foot rest, you’re good to go!

I even sprung for sodas and popcorn. I never do that!

Ensconced in recliners with theater snacks at the ready, we were ready to be wowed by Wonder Woman.

And boy, did this movie deliver! It was so many levels of freakin’ awesome. The beautiful paradise of Themysciria to the grey smoke covered buildings of London, from the all too human casualties of war on the ground to the pyrotechnics of an Amazon warriors in battle against the god of war, this film was visually magnificent. But no matter how good a movie looks, it still needs characters you believe in and react emotionally to. And Wonder Woman delivers on that too.

At the core of Wonder Woman’s success is the phenomenally perfect casting of Gal Gadot as Diana, an Amazon princess of Themysciria, an island hidden away from men, populated by near immortal women, trained as warriors, proponents of peace. The world of men and World War I come crashing on Themysciria’s shores. Diana rescues Steve Trevor from his downed aircraft while Diana’s fellow Amazons engage in battle the German soldiers who are in pursuit of Trevor.

The Germans threaten to slaughter the Amazons with their machine guns vs. bow and arrows. But the Amazons are superior fighters and defeat the invaders. Steve Trevor tells the Amazons of the world wide war that’s raging beyond their shores and a looming threat to prolong that war. Diana is convinced this is the work of Ares, the God of War. In defiance of her mother, Diana leaves the island with Steve as they journey back to his world.

Gadot strongly demonstrates the unique appeal and power of Wonder Woman, a woman trained as a warrior but still in touch with her sense of compassion for others. Gal Gadot’s Diana is fierce and feminine and it’s not a contradiction as she effortlessly moves from a woman heartsick over the civilian casualties of war to a raging warrior who plows into a German machine gun nest.  Diana is not perfect. She’s impatient with navigating the mores of man’s world and the machinations of Steve Trevor’s strategy. And she is naïve enough to think that when Ares is defeated, mankind will war no more. She has to learn that humanity is way too messy for such a neat tidy solution. They are capable of doing bad things without outside interference; but they are able to aspire and achieve nobler goals.

And no one better represents that status than Steve Trevor. Chris Pine embues Trevor with an easygoing charm but a deeper conviction that he can make a difference in bringing this war to an end. He and other men are not perfect but when they reach beyond themselves, they are admirable.  Trevor is all swagger and confidence on a mission but out of mission mode, he’s less certain and adorably awkward as he navigates around this strange woman from an exotic lost island.  Steve Trevor’s ultimate fate breaks Diana’s heart but also restores her faith that mankind Is worth fighting for.

And an Amazonian high five to director Patty Jenkins who put this together so wonderfully. Wonder Woman is a film of spectacle, of super powered derring do but it is also a movie with heart, with humor and drama in a perfect balance. This is not the grim washed out palate of Batman Vs. Superman. There are times of grief and grimness; it is after all a time of war, a war where science and technology first advanced the capability of mass death and destruction. But those times are balanced by hope, compassion, yes, wonder.  Even in the face of grief and loss, in the face of depravity and death, the story of Diana, Amazon princess of Themysciria, is an inspiration to stand up to darkness and despair and refute them.

Nowhere in Wonder Woman is Diana called Wonder Woman, not even a cheesy self-referential, “Wow! That woman! What a wonder she is!” or something like that.  But Gal Gadot’s Diana is a woman of many wonders and Wonder Woman is a strong, distinctive, well made entry in the pantheon of super hero movies. It is no less than what a Wonder Woman deserves.

Until next time, remember to be good to one another, just like Diana would want us to do.

It's Sunday. Whazzup?

Hi! Dave-El here, poking his head out to see what's going on.

I have a code in my node. I mean, a cold in my nose. I suppose it was only a matter of time. Here in the Fortress of Ineptitude, daughter Randie and wife Andrea are taking their turns with this cold so I guess I was due.

Andrea's birthday was yesterday, marred by her ongoing cold battle. We did NOT get to see Wonder Woman yesterday; I'm hoping we can get that done today.

We did get to see Doctor Who at Geeksboro last night. I'll write about that and post it on Saturday which is the new schedule for this sort of thing. But spoiler! The Doctor did regenerate last night and the new Doctor is (and NO ONE saw this coming) actress Errin Hayes. Oh, so that's why she was fired from Kevin Can Wait.

Kevin Can Wait is a perfectly unremarkable, middling sitcom starring Kevin James (AKA Paul Blart, Mall Cop!) that debuted on CBS last year. Apparently producers wanted to go in a different direction (perhaps funny?) and decided that Errin Hayes' wife and mother character had to go.

Yes, this person...

...has to go because producers think this person...

...can do better?

Only in Hollywood.

So that means Mrs. Kevin Can Wait has to die (that'll be good for laughs!) or run off with another man or another woman (hilarity will ensue right from every orifice!).

No, the Doctor did not regenerate (of come ON! It was a fake out just as everyone expected. Except for Andrea and her Twitter followers who really thought something big might happen!). More on that in the Doctor Who Is NEW! post in 6 days.

Before Doctor Who time, we enjoyed our regularly scheduled steak for birthday dinner. When it's my birthday or Andrea's, we go out for steak. We really can't seem to come up with a better idea.

During dinner, my daughter and I got into a conversation about the various people in comics called Blue Beetle. The phrase "and then he fell into a hole" came up a lot. No, I don't know how we got on the topic of Blue Beetle. Andrea thought we were talking about the Tick who is a different blue hued bug themed character.

While at dinner, I noticed on a TV set near the bar there was breaking news of "incidents" in London. Seven people died and nearly 50 were injured when a vehicle barreled into pedestrians on London Bridge and then three attackers embarked on a stabbing rampage at a nearby market.

The U.K. has been taking a lot of punches lately. Manchester is still in shock from the bombing after the Arianna Grande concert two weeks ago. Now this.

Leaders from around the world provided words of support and offers to help. Yes, even Donald Trump. Oh his SECOND Tweet. His first tweet was why it's important for his travel ban to be put into effect. Then Ivanka poked him with a stick and he later tweeted, "U.K., sorry for your loss. We're here for you buddy. #TravelBan"  (OK, I am paraphrasing a bit.)

So that's that for today's post. I'm going to medicate and chill for a bit, then drag our butts out of the Fortress to see Wonder Woman win World War I.

Until next time, try to stay well, turn down your lights where appropriate and remember to be good to one another.

Doctor Who Is NEW!: The Pyramid At The End Of The World

Hey there! Hi there! Ho there! Happy Wonder Woman Day!

The new Wonder Woman movie is out this weekend and today has been designated as Wonder Woman Day to celebrate! We're looking to go see the movie this afternoon by way of celebrating...

Andrea's Birthday! Today is my lovely wife's birthday and in addition to seeing Wonder Woman, we'll be heading over to Geeksboro to see this week's new Doctor Who episode.

And speaking of Doctor Who episodes, when am I going to write about last week's new episode?

Well, that brings us to today's post.

In the past, I have posted about any given Saturday's new Doctor Who the next day. So far for Series 10, that's proven to be difficult. So here on in for the rest of Series 10, I will be posting about any given Saturday's new Doctor Who the next Saturday.

So before going to see tonight's new Doctor Who episode (9 PM Eastern Time on BBC America), here's a look back at what happened last week.

Warning: spoilers, sweetie.

After the break.

The Pyramid At The End Of The World
by Peter Harness and Steven Moffatt

So it's Bill Potts and Penny together again for the first time. This time is not a simulation. This time the date is real. And this time, the interruption of that date by a high ranking person is also real. The Secretary General of the United Nations is looking for the President. Bill is confused; she doesn't know the President and wouldn't have voted for him if she could. ("He's... orange." Great! The world of Doctor Who did not escape Trump either.)

But no, the President the UN guy is looking for is... The Doctor. As in "The President of Earth" in times of global crisis.

The same Doctor who is still blind after the events in Oxygen two weeks prior and is still determined to keep that a secret from everybody, even Bill.

The Doctor is found and brought up to speed on why he's needed as "The President of Earth" once more: between the assembled armies of the United States, China and Russia is a 5,000 year old pyramid.

That wasn't there the day before.

OK, that's weird.

So the Doctor, Bill and Nardole (providing exposition to fill in what the Doctor can't "see" through his sonic sunglasses) join the head of the UN and the generals of the three armies to check out this pyramid.

Uh oh. It's the Monks from Extremis. Apparently simulations are over and they're ready to lower the boom on Earth for realsies. But the Monks conquest of Earth can only take place if humans consent. Out of love.

OK, the Monks are ugly and creepy as all hell. Very hard to love is what I'm saying.

A show of force from the generals is easily stopped by the Monks. There's no question of their power and what they are capable of. But still, why would humans consent for the Monks to take over?

The Monks show our assembled team the future 1 year out: the Earth is devastated and all the humans are dead. The Monks say they can stop this but the humans must consent to be conquered.

To add to the tension, the Monks have reset all the clocks in the world to 11:57 PM. Or 3 minutes to midnight. Every clock in the world is a doomsday clock.

The UN leader steps up to offer his consent to the Monks to save the human race. The Doctor disagrees with this but no matter. The Monks sense the Secretary General is acting out of fear, not love and he disintegrates into dust.

Uh oh.

The army generals figure that the end of life on earth is precipitated by war breaking out between their assembled armies. They shake on it, agreeing to give peace a chance.

The doomsday clocks instead click a minute closer to midnight.

Well that sucks.

The Doctor thinks that the Monks are engaging in some serious misdirection, plopping a big hard to miss pyramid in a war zone when the true threat is something else, some small but nonetheless lethal.

Maybe I should mention the sub-plot?

A scientist named Erica on her way to work breaks her glasses. Douglas, her partner in the lab is nursing the mother of all hangovers after a night of excessive drinking. Erica can't see so Douglas needs to punch in numbers and stuff. A bit wobbly from all the drinking, he plugs in 111.8 instead of 11.18 which sends some science doohickey into overdrive and creates an extremely lethal biochemical agent that turns Douglas into goo.

Back to the Doctor who faces the indomitable task of finding the one biochemical lab that now has the world down to...Holey freaking cow! One minute to midnight! Doing a clever thing, the Doctor and Nardole get the Monks to point them to the right lab.  The Doctor and Nardole are off while Bill stays with the generals to make sure they don't do something stupid like...

Give their consent to the Monks? Really, guys! But their consent is born of strategy and not love and they get zapped to dust, leaving Bill alone with the Monks.

The Doctor and Nardole arrive in the lab with Erica. Even though Nardole is not human, the doctor says he's human enough (The Doctor got Nardole's lungs "real cheap") and sends him back to the TARDIS. But whoops! Nardole's been infected and falls unconscious inside the TARDIS.

In the lab, the doctor is playing beat the clock to stop the contagion before an automatic lab protocol vents the nasty stuff into air. The Doctor's solution? Sterilization.

Or "blow stuff up" works too. The Doctor rigs up an explosive and plants it in the section where the contagion is. The blast will be contained in this area and will destroy the bio-killer. With a two minute delay, all the Doctor has to do is get past the airlock and to safety.

Hey, the plan's working! Doomsday clocks are moving back from midnight? Yay!

Or maybe not so "yay." To get past the airlock and to safety, the doctor has to enter a code to unlock the door. But he can't see to enter the code, Nardole is unable to help and Erica can't see the panel to guide him.

The Doctor, in contact with Bill, finally confesses that he's blind and has been for some time. The explosion will finish off the Doctor as well as the bio-killer. The Earth will be saved.

Then Bill asks the Monks, if she consents, will they restore the Doctor's eyesight? They say they can do this. Bill gives her consent and does not crumble into dust because she's acting out of love for the Doctor. The Monks accept her consent.

With seconds to spare, the Doctor's vision is restored, he enters the code and escapes just ahead of the contagion killing explosion. Then Bill gives the Doctor an order: he better get her planet back.

And....  we're out.

And whew!

Doctor Who Series 10 has been on quite a roll with each episode and The Pyramid At The End Of The World keeps up that quality trend. In fact, I might go as far as to say this episode is the best one so far.

There is so much humor, drama and action that packs every minute of a taut and tense episode.

The Monks have moved from simulations to the real thing and they are scarily effective. I've read some theories that the Monks are precursors to the Cybermen of Mondas. I see the connection, the Monks with their round open unmoving mouths echoes the design of the original Cybermen.

Nothing with the vault this week but there was no time. I see that will not be the case next episode.

Nardole better be OK!! He provides a twist on the usual role of the companion who is usually there for the Doctor to explain things to bring the audience up to date. Nardole's job is to describe what the audience knows already.

Nardole better be OK!!

Bill is put an unenviable position with the Monks. She can save the Doctor and all it will cost is the whole world. And yes, if the circumstances were reversed, the Doctor would've done the same thing to save Bill.  First save Bill; next, save the planet. The difference is the human makes the decision but it's still based on the same criteria: the Doctor will make this better.

Or will he?

NEXT TIME...

The Monks rule the world.
The Monks have always ruled the world.
The Monks will always rule the world.

But Bill Potts is the only human who knows that isn't true. But what can she do? Where is the Doctor? Has the Doctor joined the side of the Monks?

Whu....?

We'll find out tonight with "The Lie of the Land".

Until next time, remember to be good to one another.

Trump's Two Step Decision Making Process

Yesterday, to the surprise of no one, Donald Trump pulled the United States out of the Paris climate change accord.

Yeah, I know we were supposed to pretend there was some doubt about Trump’s intentions, that forces in favor of remaining a part of the accords, several large businesses including oil and chemical producers and his own daughter Ivanka, might carry the day. Even the friggin’ Pope had no sway as appeals to logic and emotion fell on deaf ears. This is because Trump’s decisions as President are based on a two part process.

Step one: Answer the question “W.W.O.D?” “What would Obama do?”

Step two:  Whatever the answer, do the exact opposite.

Now this maybe shouldn’t be much of a surprise as Trump is allegedly a Republican and Obama was not. One might expect a certain split from the actions of the previous President.

But I don’t think Li’l Donnie is that ideologically driven. I think it all boils down to a personal vendetta: Trump is out to roll back everything Obama did or wanted not based on ideology but because taking on Obama and his legacy is to Trump's view "good for business".

That "business" is keeping the base that put Trump in the White House happy.

Whether Trump truly feels any deep, personal animus towards Obama is beside the point. But the Republican Party, Fox News and the alt-right spent years stroking up the anger of people who felt disenfranchised and were told repeatedly that their problems were all Obama’s fault. And Trump tapped that market of rage and frustration in his campaign and sees no reason to stop now that he’s President and Obama no longer is.

Punching holes in Obama’s legacy is a great way to throw red meat at that base and keep them in his corner.

At some point, even the dumbest Trump supporter should realize, “Hey, my life still sucks and Obama’s no longer president. Hey, Trump, stop fucking with Obama and actually do something helpful!”

But for now Trump thinks running against a former President still works and he’s probably right about that.

Pulling out of the Paris climate has all sorts of downsides.

  • Withdrawal from the Agreement jeopardizes our relationship with multiple strategic allies at a time when diplomatic relationships are already weak.
  • The U.S. departure from the Paris Agreement also abandons a role of leadership on the world stage while China uis more than willing to step up.
  • Renewable energy is on track to being a $6 trillion dollar industry. Instead of being at the forefront of that largesse, America will take a back seat to China.
  • Withdrawing from the Paris Agreement does nothing to create new jobs for Trump’s loyal supporters. But it does diminish America's competiveness in the renewable energy market.

Notice these reasons do not address the Earth’s climate at all. Even if Trump wants to foolishly disavow climate change, the stakes here go the core of subjects that Trump would be expected to care about, economic and political power. Withdrawal from the Paris agreement weakens America’s standing in the world as we forfeit our place at the table, forfeits our hold or gains in power.

So why would Trump walk away from that?

W.W.O.D? Stay with the Paris climate accord.

Trump’s response: do the opposite.

Going Too Far

In case it hasn’t been clear from prior posts, let me state for the record the official position of I’m So Glad My Suffering Amuses You:

Donald Trump is a moron.

Donald Trump is a liar, a dishonest person of questionable character and suspect ethics. Donald Trump is a babbling man-baby who probably should not be allowed to be a school crossing guard, let alone President of the United States.

Donald Trump is incompetent and vastly unsuited to occupy the White House and the Oval Office.

To summarize: Donald Trump is a moron.

If you can't figure it out, I don't like Donald Trump.

And it's a sentiment shared by many others.

But....

In our collective appalled state that Donald Trump is the President and our expressions of disgust in response, there is the concept of going too far.

Like Kathy Griffin did.

Griffin is a comedian with a rep for pushing boundaries of good taste and good sense. Just ask Anderson Cooper, the CNN anchor who has been on the receiving end of Kathy's shenanigans on CNN's New Year's Eve broadcasts for a decade now. But when pushing boundaries is what you do and part of your image, there is a need to push farther, the find out how far is too far.

Kathy Griffin found it.. in the form of her holding a bloody decapitated head that looks like Donald Trump's head.

Yes, Donald Trump is a moron but really?  A bloody decapitated head that looks like Donald Trump's head? Really, Kathy? Come on!

Yes, Donald Trump is a reprehensible life form who is a disgrace to the office of President, an embarrassment to this nation and completely repugnant to the rest of the planet! We must stand up and give voice to our resistance! We must shine bright with the light of our dreams and aspirations and our better nature.

A bloody decapitated head that looks like Donald Trump's head? That is the weapon of our enemy, a weapon of fear and hate. Their weapons should not be our weapons. We can be better than that. We MUST be better than that.

Kathy Griffin has apologized; it was a joke that went too far and wasn't really funny. But it's already cost her; CNN has cut ties with the comedian; she will no longer co-host CNN's New Year's Eve show.

And she's given ammunition to Trump and his enablers. The next time Trump does something stupid and disrespectful, we will be reminded, "Hey, what about that time Kathy Griffin held up a bloody decapitated head that looked like Donald Trump's head?"

Going too far. As Trump tramples on the American dream with each passing day, it may seem wrong to say there is such a thing as going too far. But in any war, there are limits, there have to be.

What good is it to obtain victory at the loss of our souls.

Everyone, be good to one another.

Comic Book Retro 50:July 1976

Welcome to another edition of Comic Book Retro 50 where I look back at comics I bought 50 years ago., This month takes us back to July 1976....
