Yesterday was Mother's Day.
19 years ago, my wife Andrea spent 9 months gestating a human life form inside her body.
The human life form popped out in the form of a baby who suckled life giving fluid from her body.
Over the course of 18 plus years, Andrea has helped raise this human life form into a person, our daughter Randie.
To celebrate Andrea's role as a mother, we went to see
Pokémon Detective Pikachu.
Well, Andrea enjoyed it.
So did I.
But don't ask me to explain it.
Randie being way more versed in the lore of Pokémon got a lot more out of it but to be fair, just a cursory knowledge of the parameters of what Pokémon is all about is sufficient to grasp the fundamentals of this movie.
Tim Goodman is 21 years old, working for an insurance company, his dreams of Pokémon training given up long ago after the death of his mother and the long absence of his father, Harry. Tim learns that Harry has died while investigating a case in Ryme City, a metropolis that outlaws Pokémon fighting, seeking a utopia of union among humans and Pokémon alike.
Tim travels to Ryme City to settle his fathers affairs when he encounters Pikachu lurking in Harry's apartment. Piakchu can speak English but only Tim can understand him.
Then other stuff happens.
OK, there's more to it than that. But I'm into giving a rote recap of plot points.
I'm not looking to make light of this movie or act like it doesn't make sense. It's a fast pace rollicking story as Tim and Pikachu unravel the mysteries around Harry's "death".
Yes, having Ryan Reynolds' patented snarky banter for Pikachu is funny but if Pokémon Detective Pikachu had only that to rely on, this movie would get old real fast. This movie does not get old, providing an entertaining and fast paced adventure.
It's a fun movie.
Even one a mother could love.
