Tuesday TV Touchbase: Jeopardy

Some thoughts on Jeopardy:

No one changed my mind among the guest hosts that the show got it right from the very start. Ken Jennings totally nailed his stint as guest host.

The only person who made me waiver from that was Mayim Bialik.

Sorry, Levar Burton. Everyone was rooting for you but you didn't impress me much.

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed Joe Buck's turn behind the podium.  Having a professional sportscaster calling Jeopardy was a fun approach to the show.

The selection of Mike Richards as host of the syndicated show is safe, boring and as much as I am loathed to admit it, makes perfect sense.  He's the only one in the guest host bunch with prior game show host experience.

Still, there is this whole sense that the fix was in when the executive producer of the show gets the hosting gig. Mike insists the final decision was never his but the execs at Sony.

And giving the hosting duties for prime time specials to Mayim Bialik seems like a cop out consolation prize to mitigate picking the most generic white guy on the planet for the main gig.

Except there is word that Mayim tested through the roof with focus groups and she couldn't take the main host job due to being too busy.

Damn you, Fox, for renewing Call Me Kat. Really?!?

Of course that's assuming this story is true. It may just be Sony in damage control mode for picking Mike Richards, the safe bet that nobody was really wanting.

And maybe not that safe a bet if the stories regarding multiple discrimination lawsuits from Mike's time as producer of The Price Is Right are on the level.

Well, the deed is done and likely, Mike will quickly get into a groove as the new host of Jeopardy and all this drama will soon be behind us.

As Alex Trebek said, the host is not the star of Jeopardy, the contestants are.

And for the last few weeks and going into the new season, we have quite a doozy of a star in Matt Amodio.

Supernaturally focused during game play, Matt has some quirks like starting all questions with "What" even if the clue is for a person. Or never saying "let's make it a true daily double" whenever he makes a double bet.

As the season ended, Matt's still in the champion's seat with just over half a million dollars in winnings, 3rd behind James Holzhauzer and Ken Jennings.

This is what Jeopardy is really all about.

And that is that for this week's Tuesday TV Touchbase.  Until next time, remember to be good to one another and try to keep it down in there, would ya? I'm trying to watch TV over here.
