So, Superman is gay.
No, not Clark Kent. Clark is still hotly hetero for Lois Lane.
But Clark is off in space doing some space stuff and has left his son Jon to keep watch over the Earth as the new Superman.
THAT Superman is gay.
Jon Kent is coming out as bisexual in November's Superman: Son of Kal-El #5 by Tom Taylor and John Timms.
Here's what Tom had to say about it:
"I've always said everyone needs heroes and everyone deserves to see themselves in their heroes and I’m very grateful DC and Warner Bros. share this idea. Superman's symbol has always stood for hope, for truth and for justice. Today, that symbol represents something more. Today, more people can see themselves in the most powerful superhero in comics."
And here's the word from DC Publisher and Chief Creative Officer Jim Lee:
"We couldn’t be prouder to tell this important story from Tom Taylor and John Timms. We talk a lot about the power of the DC Multiverse in our storytelling and this is another incredible example. We can have Jon Kent exploring his identity in the comics as well as Jon Kent learning the secrets of his family on TV on Superman & Lois. They coexist in their own worlds and times, and our fans get to enjoy both simultaneously."
Dean Cain who used to be Man of Steel in Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman is not a fan.
No surprise there with Cain more than willing to sully his rep with every Trump glorifying appearance he can muster on Fox News.
How do I feel about this news?
Well, it's a little weird.
Because less than 4 years ago, Jon Kent was still a young boy, having goofy play dates with Damian Wayne.
Then Brian Michael Bendis aged him up to young adulthood through shenanigans that I didn't necessarily approve of and now Jon's gay.
I think I would be as gob smacked if you told me that Jon was super straight and knocked up Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld.
C'mon, guys! He was just a kid 4 years ago.
As we unfortunately covered in yesterday's post, it is still not always a safe and accepting world for the LGBTQ+ community.
Having a strong, positive role model is perhaps more important than ever. And as Tom Taylor said, "everyone deserves to see themselves in their heroes" and what better example to see that happen than in the person wearing the mantel of the world's greatest super hero.
