Last week, Andrea and I caught the season premiere of Young Sheldon where it seems that George Cooper Sr. had a near brush with infidelity that was curtailed by a near brush with death.
George has another heart attack.
At a bar, George and newly single neighbor Brenda are having a good ol' time commiserating over their mutual love of the music of Lynyrd Skynyrd over too many chicken wings and too many beers.
Brenda suggests that since her ex has the kids, maybe they could continue to party at her place and George has all of five seconds to contemplate that invitation before the heart attack hits.
Spoiler: George lives and is recovering at home, feeling a bit guilty about how close he came to cheating on his wife.
George sits down to talk to Brenda at her kitchen table about what happened. They were two friends in a bar having a good time, nothing else happened, there's nothing to feel guilty about and yeah, it still feels weird.
I've seen some stuff on the internet that this episode undermine or contradicts Big Bang Theory regarding George Sr's behavior. BBT frequently painted Sheldon's dad as a drunken philanderer.
So far on Young Sheldon, George Sr has been a loving and supportive husband and father. But we are seeing that person being eroded away but countless deferred dreams and the lack of any support and understanding from his wife, Mary.
As I wrote in last week's Tuesday TV Touchbase, "Mary is a judgmental bitch who does not appreciate the man and no wonder if it drives him to drink more and cheat on her."
And Mary isn't doing much better by the rest of her family.
At the end of the last season, part of the blow up in the Cooper household was Missy's raw, emotional outbursts while in the throes of her first romantic break up.
With some support and advise from George Sr, Missy finds a way to make peace with what happened.
Mary who was just fervently praying to Jesus to keep her family safe does not have one damn clue what Missy is talking about.
Mary has her own head so far up her own evangelical ass, she has no clue what's going on with her own daughter.
Jesus: "Hey, Mary. Maybe it might help if you spend less time with your nose in the air looking up at me and for time looking across at your daughter who you may notice is a half a foot taller now!"
By the way, Jesus is right. The kids had a growth spurt over the summer. Iain Armitage and Raegan Revord are significantly taller than they were at the end of season 4. There must have been some magic dust in that old shed Missy was hiding in with Sheldon at the end of season 4 because they came out of it in season 5 at least a half foot taller.
As Young Sheldon ages into slightly less young Sheldon, it is the clear the semi-idyllic nature of the first four seasons is going to be a thing of the best as the Cooper family heads in a darker direction, one that we know will lead to the fall and ultimate death of George Cooper Sr.
Speaking of dark directions...
Stargirl continues with it's "Summer School" season.
Clearly this summer time season was shot in the fall and winter of whatever Canadian province is supposed to be doubling for Blue Valley, Nebraska so...
Real Life Writes the Plot: As a result of the deep, dark EVULZ of Eclipso, the weather in and around Blue Valley has been corrupted as well with cold weather and grey skies. Happy 4th of July! Don't forget your coat and scarf.
The deep, dark EVULZ of Eclipso have decimated Courtney's Justice Society. Yolanda has been mentally tormented and guilted in to giving up being Wildcat. Rick was tricked with illusions and mind games into nearly beating his uncle to death and is now in jail so that is that for Hourman.
Beth got a double whammy of the deep, dark EVULZ of Eclipso with a full attack combining misogyny and racism to take Doctor Midnite out of the game. Doesn't quite stick. Beth may be sweet and innocent but you don't spend your whole life as a black girl in 99% white Blue Valley without learning some defense.
It's Stargirl herself who is the latest target of the deep, dark EVULZ of Eclipso. But Eclipso doesn't come after Courtney directly. He whammies Barbara, Pat and Mike seperately, putting them through their own individual hells.
Pat's hell is the the dissolution of the original JSA after they defeated Eclipso the first time, by murdering his human host.
Pat feels compelled to confess this to Courtney which send her back on her heels.
1) Pat was keeping secrets after agreeing to not to do that anymore
2) It was a secret that completely undermines everything she thought the original JSA stood for.
Things are going to get worse before they get better.
Speaking of getting worse...
Supergirl is a muddled mess.
So 5th dimensional imp Nyxly is after some magical goober of power and to get it, she has to get these totems that come with a curse or a challenge or some damn thing.
Kara and her super friends are running around doing... I don't know... things, I guess... to find her and stop her or....
Oh and Lena Luthor is a witch now.
An actual spell casting witch and....
OK, I give up.
Andrea and I have been following Supergirl since season 1 episode 1 and we are determined to see this show to the end but...
Damn, it is so hard.
Next week, we catch up on the season finales of Only Murders in the Building, Star Trek: Lower Decks and What If..?
Until next time, remember to be good to one another and try to keep it down in there, would ya? I'm trying to watch TV over here.
