Panem Et Circenses

The topic today is panem et circenses.  I'm dropping some Latin, y'all.

Panem et circenses is Latin for "bread and circuses". 

The phrase "bread and circuses" refers to getting the public on your side not through anything substantive or actually helpful but by means of diversion or distraction.  

You think I'm on your side because I appear to be busy as hell but truth be told, I ain't doing shit to be of any actual assistance to you or your needs.  

Which brings us to the modern Republican Party and the downward spiral of the House of Representatives they ostensibly control. 

Last week, Matt Gaetz delivered on his promise of retribution for Kevin McCarthy's sin of actually working with Democrats to keep the government open by working with the Democrats to vote McCarthy out of his job as Speaker of the House. 

None of this paves one road, reinforces one bridge, trains one soldier, builds one school, secures one border....  nothing associated with the actual functions of government and how the government may actually be of benefit to you was accomplished. 

Gaetz's priority was a power move to show McCarthy who's boss. It makes for great political theater. 

It doesn't do one damn bit of a good for any damn body.

Then interim Speaker of the House Patrick McHenry decides a priority action he just had to take RIGHT NOW was to order Nancy Pelosi to vacate her office. While she was out of town attending Diane Feinstein's funeral.  

Where the hell Pelosi has her office does not do one god damn thing to help a family to pay for medical costs, to cope with inflation, to protect them from harm. Pelosi's office space doesn't do shit to preserve my rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. 

But it'll play well with the folks back home when McHenry can brag he's the one who kicked that liberal loving, America hating woke Pelosi bitch out of her office.

Republicans in the House of Representatives are holding hearings into impeaching President Joe Biden for... reasons? They'll think of something. Possibly something to do with Hunter Biden maybe? 

On the first day of hearings, the Republicans first witness to testify said there is nothing going on that is impeachable. 

These impeachment hearings do fuck all to protect Americans here at home or promote our interests abroad. 

By god damn it, if Donald Trump got impeached, they will fucking impeach Biden too for... something?

The modern Republican Party does not have a political agenda that is popular with most Americans.  Their base of support is a dwindling demographic that is outnumbered by the growing demographic of voters who want something different.  

Lacking substance, Republicans lean towards theater, making boisterous shows of histrionic outrage to get time on camera to promote an atmosphere of hysteria and fear. They're engaged only in the illusion of working hard but not for anything Americans really need or want.
