Cinema Sunday: The Band Wagon

Welcome to Cinema Sunday and today is New Year's Eve and what a perfect day for a classic movie musical.  And we're looking at a classic regarded as one of the best MGM movie musicals.

And with a pedigree of Fred Astaire and director Vincente Minnelli, well, it's to be expected.

From 1953, it's The Band Wagon.

Fred Astaire is Tony Hunter, a famous star of musical comedies on stage and on screen but that star has dimmed a bit after 3 years off.

He returns to New York City to hear a pitch from his good friends, Lester and Lily Marton, who have written a stage show, a light musical comedy, that they think will be a perfect comeback for Tony.

Their script has caught the attention of Jeffrey Cordova, actor/writer/director/producer.  At the moment, he's starring in (AND directing) a new adaptation of Oedipus Rex that he wrote based on the original Greek story.

Cordova establishes his bonavides as a producer but securing the beautiful and talented ballerina Gabrielle "Gaby" Gerard (Cyd Charisse) to join the production.

Cyd Charisses has legs that, as the saying goes, go all the way up.

But can the dramatic Cordova really put on a comedy. Cordova makes the point it's all entertainment, be it comedy or tragedy, song and dance or romance. This leads to a big production number with Tony, Lester and Lily Morton as well as Jeff Cordova, "That's Entertainment!"

(Which is used A LOT in the compilation films That's Entertainment I, II and III which we covered here.)

But getting Gaby for the show is the only thing he gets right. Otherwise, Cordova is a clueless about how musical comedies work.

Cordova thinks the Marton's play is a brilliant adaption of the legend of Faust. He swears to Tony and the Marton he gets what they're doing but he still pitches the play to financial backers as "a brilliant adaption of the legend of Faust".

And during rehearsals Cordova decimates the production with dark and sinister turns that totally eviscerates the whole "light musical comedy" concept the Martons pitched.

Everyone is miserable.

Especially Tony who is stuck in a play that's not the one he signed up for. And he's got problems with Gaby.

And Gaby is bugged by Tony. But their animosity is not driven by ego but by insecurity. Because Gaby is a classically trained ballerina, Tony feels his self taught hoofing will make him look bad next to her. And because Tony has such an easy free spirited style, Gaby feels her structured dancing training will make her look bad next to him.

Eventually these two crazy "kids" will finally sit down and talk and find they have more in common than they thought and they will fall in love.

("Kids" as in Fred Astaire was 54 years old and Cyd Charrise was 23 years his junior.)

While Tony and Gaby make their relationship work, the play is not working.

Cordova just keeps piling on with more dark turns of the plot and has, of course, cast himself as the Devil. (Can't do a story about Faust without a Devil to bargain with.)

And the play makes its debut.

And it BOMBS!

It's not the light musical comedy the Martons envisioned but it gets laughs but for all the wrong reasons.

Tony takes control of the production and oversees making the show the light hearted musical comedy it was supposed to be.

The show makes it's Broadway debut (sans Faust) and it's a smash success! Gaby and Tony kiss in front of everybody as we get a reprise of "That's Entertainment!"

The "It's That Person Who Was In That Thing" Department

  • One of the play investors Jeff Cordova meets with is Aunt Harriet from Batman. Yep, that's Madge Blake.
  • Oscar Levant as Lester Marton co-starred with Gene Kelly in An American In Paris.
  • And speaking of Kelly, Cyd Charisse appeared in Singin' in the Rain (1952) as the long-legged woman in the green sequined dress and Louise Brooks hair who vamps Gene Kelly in the "Broadway Melody" sequence

And on the subject of Gene Kelly, the"The Girl Hunt Ballet" is very evocative of Gene Kelly's more surreal dance sequences that tend to culminate his movies but he had nothing to do with this one.

The role of Tony Hunter reflected Fred Astaire's real life status at the time. Astaire saw himself as moving away from the prolific schedule of his younger years and certain moving away from being a song and dance man. He had to be talked into starring in The Band Wagon.

Over all, The Band Wagon deserves it's acclaim and is quite an enjoyable film. It has all the hallmarks of a classic musical but with a knowing awareness of the absurdities of the format.

Songs For Saturday: The Finale - Rachael Price and 10,000 Maniacs with Clannad, Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova

And today is the day, the last installment of Songs For Saturday.

Yeah, I stopped Songs For Saturday once before only to bring it back 2 months later.

But I mean it this time.

Kicking off our last playlist, here is Rachael Price with her cover of  Blind Faith's "Can't Find My Way Home".

Next up is a favorite song of mine that I don't think I've ever posted to a Songs For Saturday.

From the movie Once, here are Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova  with "Falling Slowly".

Here's another song that is a long time favorite of mine that for some reason or another I don't believe I've ever shared on this forum. From Clannad, here is a haunting and somber melody called "The Theme to Harry's Game".

We'll finish off this post with a song that has made a lot of appearances on Songs For Saturday, "More Than This". Originally performed by Roxy Music, this is a live cover by 10,000 Maniacs.

And that is a wrap on Songs For Saturday.

Music is still very important to me and perhaps I will launch some new semi-regular feature on the blog to share my favorite music.

But the weekly forum known as Songs For Saturday is at an end.

Next week, the blog will present not one but two weekend posts about movies with the beginning of Cinema Saturday joining up with Cinema Sunday.

Always remember to be good to one another and to always keep the music alive.

Your Friday Video Link: Andy Huggins' Drinking Game

I've recently discovered a comedian named Andy Huggins.

Andy is 73 years old and recently launched a comedy special called "Early Bird Special".

Because he's old, you see.

It's OK, he knows he's old.

Tik Tok started feeding me clips of this guy and I think he's funny as hell.

Your Friday Video Link is a half minute clip from that special where Andy describes his favorite drinking game called "Leave Me the Fuck Alone".

That's a game I can get behind.

Still Waiting

Perhaps you've heard that election workers Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss are suing Rudy Giuliani for defamation in the wake of spreading lies they were involved in fraud to steal the 2020 election away from Donald Trump in favor of Joe Biden.

And you might think, Gee, Dave-El, that's OLD news! It was ruled weeks ago that Giuliani was guilty of defamation in his untrue statements about the 2 Georgia election workers and on top of that, a jury decided that he was on the hook for $148 million in damages.

Well, you're right. THAT is old news.

But to borrow a phrase from comedian Ron White, Rudy Giuliani has the right to remain silent... but not the ability.

Even as a jury was holding his financial fate in his hands, Rudy Giuliani was still telling anyone who would listen that everything he said about Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss was true.

Everything that already been ruled as a lie and therefore was defamation, ALL of that Rudy still was saying out loud it was true.

Which constitutes a whole fresh round of defamation.

If anyone thought  Rudy Giuliani would straighten the fuck up after paying the legal price in a court of law for his lying and overall fuckery in service to Donald Trump...

Well...

Rudy's lord and master Donald Trump did the same god damn thing earlier this year when he was found guilty of defaming E. Jean Carroll who accused of him sexually assaulting her.

He was found guilty, incurred a large financial penalty and was on TV the same damn fucking day still talking shit about E. Jean Carroll.

Guess who's taking Li'l Donnie's fat ass back to court?

If you thought facing judgement in a court of law would do anything to change Donald Trump's behavior, well....

We're still on the cusp of a judgement in the Trump fraud case.

Remember, Trump and his organization has already been found guilty of fraud. The most recent proceedings were to determine the penalties to be levied as punishment for that fraud.

The finale of that proceeding is forthcoming at the start of the year and if anyone thinks this will change Donald Trump's behavior or actually effectively punish him any way, I think we're gonna be...

Then there are the 4 indictments and the 91 federal criminal charges to come.

Trump is doing everything possible to delay, delay, delay.

He hopes he can get elected President again and can pardon himself from all this shit if he can put it off long enough.

He wants to make sure as far as these trials are going, we are...

And even if they all go off as planned and as scheduled, will it really change anything? Never mind with Li'l Donnie himself but with the electorate that is so mind-numbingly devoted to his cult like status.  Every set back Trump or his sniveling sycophants experiences seems to embolden and strengthen their devotion.

If we still think that even a conviction in a criminal court will stop either Trump or his brainwashed cult, I fear we will be...

Yeah, still waiting.

Doctor Who Is NEW! - The Church On Ruby Road

Well, fans of Doctor Who, the moment has arrived.

After months and months of anticipation, Ncuti Gatwa takes over in the TARDIS as the Doctor.

And we meet our next new companion, Millie Gibson as Ruby Sunday.

Enough with the nostalgia tour of the 60th Anniversary specials. It's time to move forward for real.

Are we ready?

This edition of Doctor Who Is NEW! takes a look at...

"The Church on Ruby Road"

by Russel T Davies

No post regenerative problems for this installment. Ncuti Gatwa is up and running as the Doctor as he investigates a web of weirdness surrounding a young woman named Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson).

Ruby has a bit of an origin mystery.  Left as a newborn baby at on the steps of a church on Ruby Road, she has no idea about her parentage. Her adoptive mother (who took her in as a foster parent) provides a loving and supportive home for Ruby and the other children takes in temporarily as a foster parent.

Including her latest charge, an infant named Lulubelle.

Meanwhile, that "web of weirdness" is an incredible series of bad luck that's affecting Ruby and those around her. The "bad luck" is the result of the sneaky machinations of goblins.

The goblins abduct Lulubelle up a long ladder into the clouds.

Ruby goes in pursuit of the baby up the ladder.

And the Doctor joins the pursuit.

Up in the clouds is the goblin ship where we learn the intentions of the goblins for the baby.

In a song.

About eating a baby. Or specifically feeding the baby to the Goblin King!

The Doctor and Ruby intervene and announce their plans to save the baby.

In a song.

Really!

The Doctor and Ruby save Lulubelle! Yay!!

Then the goblins make a crack in time and....

Ruby vanishes and nobody remembers she ever existed.

Nooooo!!!!!

The goblins have gone back in time to retrieve baby Ruby from the steps of the church on Ruby Road.

Stand back! The Doctor is going to use SCIENCE! He pulls the goblin ship down from the sky and impales the Goblin King on the spire of the church on Ruby Road!

EPIC!

And he saves the baby!!!

Back in the present, Ruby still exists and all is as it should be.

But Ruby's wondering....

Who was that guy?

She rushes down to the street and enters a blue box that's bigger on the inside than is on the outside and...

The rest will have to wait until Spring 2024!

Damn it!!

Ncuti Gatwa is awesome as the Doctor! It's a unique take but with hints of other Doctors. (An encounter with a police officer at the start sees Ncuti channeling Chris Eccleston's 9th Doctor.)

Millie Gibson's Ruby Sunday looks to be a worthwhile addition to the pantheon of those lucky souls to be known as Doctor Who companions. She's human enough to be a little freaked out by the weird but strong enough to take a deep breath and face the weird.

Ncuti and Millie have great onscreen chemistry in their first outing with the potential of being one of the shows great Doctor/companion pairings.

There's a bit at the end after the TARDIS vanishes from outside Ruby's home and as a neighbor reacts with shock at the disappearing box, another neighbor, an older woman with white hair named Mrs. Flood looks right out at the screen and says, "It's like he's never seen a TARDIS before."  Mrs. Flood is played by Anita Dobson, wife of Queen guitarist Brian May.  And Mrs. Flood will apparently be reappearing.

So that's a thing.

And we'll have to wait until Spring 2024!!! Really?!?!?!

I'm really excited for what happens next.

And here's a teaser for the new season.

"Classic!!!!"

Remember to be good to one another

Tuesday TV Touchbase: 2023 - The Year In Television

Well, as the John Lennon Christmas song says, "Another year over and what have you done?"

Well, I've watched too much television.

And so much remains unwatched?

What's a TV watching obsessive to do?

Well, let me take a look back over previous Tuesday TV Touchbase posts and review what exactly did I watch this year.

Let's start with the world of Star Trek.

Star Trek Picard gets high marks for most improved but after the misguided debacle of season 2, that was a pretty low bar. And to be honest, the first part of season 3 was hampered by a lot of the same problems of poor pacing, lapses on plot logic and misguided characterization that brought down the first 2 seasons. But season 3 ended on a big note that finally gave the fans what they wanted, the Next Gen crew back together again. Hell, they even figured out a clever way to get Brent Spiner back as Data instead of another variant of the disreputable Soong family.

Star Trek Lower Decks had a fairly strong season 4 that was undermined by a questionable denouement of the season arc, revealing Nick  Locarno as the big bad.

But far and away for consistent quality across it's 2nd season, Star Trek Strange New Worlds  with two particularly high points worthy of being singled out, the musical episode and the crossover with Lower Decks.

Moving from Trek to Wars, Andrea and I did our obligatory Star Wars watch with The Mandolorian and Ahsoka.  We will follow Baby Yoda and David Tennant almost anywhere.

Speaking of Mr. Tennant, 2023 gave us the 2nd season of Good Omens.  The stakes were a bit less high and the tone was a bit uneven but our favorite demon/angel pair is always worth a return visit. (And the show will return of a 3rd and final season.)

And 2023 gave us MORE David Tennant with 3 outstanding Doctor Who 60th anniversary specials.

By the way, look for Doctor Who Is NEW! posting tomorrow for my post on the 2023 Christmas special!

TV from comic books still fill my viewing schedule. The Sandman perfectly captures the dark, mind fuckery of the original Neil Gaiman comic book series.

Superman and Lois took a foreboding turn with Lois Lane battling breast cancer. Everyone involved approached this subject with sensitivity and compassion. Lois struggles with the news of her diagnosis and the turmoil of her chemotherapy leading to her mastectomy. No corners are cut in this storyline of approaching this terrible journey as realistically as possible. It's a shame Superman and Lois has not gained more attention for this groundbreaking storyline.

I am finally catching up to Doom Patrol just as Max has released the final episodes of it's 4th and final season. This is a show that looks and acts like nothing else on TV and also deserves more notoriety. As I write this, I've got 4 episodes before the end. I'm going to miss this weird little show but I'm not entirely sure it's been good for my mental health.  More on that in a future Touchbase.

In the world of sitcoms, Andrea and I took deep dives over the summer into the first 2 seasons of Abbott Elementary  and Ghosts. We've enjoyed both series a lot and look forward to both shows debuting their 3rd seasons in February.

Young Sheldon can be quite funny and emotionally engaging; George Jr and Mandy having a baby was a game changer and the biggest change of all, Mee Maw's house gets destroyed by a tornado. But the series continues to falter in what to do with Sheldon himself. And the series will be wrapping up with it's 7th season.

I think Andrea and I are still on board with the revived Night Court but damn it needs to get a lot better to keep my interest.

The revived Quantum Leap has developed into something that is most definitely holding my interest. Some of the changes from the original series (spending time with the project team) that I wasn't originally sure about have paid off very well for a very satisfying revival of the classic series.

The return of Timothy Olyphant as Raylan Givens in Justified: City Primeval was not as satisfying. It's always a good thing to see Olyphant as Givens but Givens was more or less a guest star in his own series. The epilogue of this series teases what we really want to see, Givens up against arch nemesis Boyd Crowder.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel did pull of a satisfying landing for it's series finale. I think I might want to introduce this series to Andrea so I can watch it again.

On the subject of introducing my wife to shows I've watched, 2023 saw us finish Lucifer and The Librarians. We just finished season 1 of The Orville.

Andrea and I also watched  FUBAR this year, the derivative but still somehow sweetly funny spy series starring Arnold Schwartznegger. And the very much NOT derivative 3rd season of Only Murders In the Building

2023 brought back another season of Outlander which I watch on my own. Some of the graphic violence is not exactly Andrea's thing.  The series is winding down to a series finale within the next year or so. As much as I am devoted to following Claire and Jamie, I think it might be time for that journey to end.

I started catching up on Community but haven't had time to return to it after I finished season 1.

Shows that I watched the first season of but may not return for season 2? Lucky Hank (navel gazing college professor struggles to realize his fucked up life may actually be his own fault) and Digman (animated series with Andy Samberg as a wildly unhinged archaeologist).

Our Flag Means Death came back for a 2nd season. Yay!

The Crown (aka That Damned Thing) came back for a 6th (oh no!) and final (yay!) season. Why are we still watching this thing?

And that is NOT all the TV I watched. And that is a lot for a year that saw TV production truncated by the writer and actor strikes.

In the upcoming 2024, I will resolve to watch MORE TV!

Until next time, remember to be good to one another and try to keep it down in there, would ya? I'm trying to watch TV over here.

Doctor Who: It's Beginning to Look Like Christmas

Today is Christmas Day so I'm taking another breather from the blog.

Since the last four five Monday posts have been Doctor Who themed, why stop now.

Here is a classic post that connects Doctor Who with Christmas.

That I wrote in July 2016.

A Christmas post from July?

It's a timey-wimey thing?

From Sunday, July 10, 2016, here is....

Doctor Who: It's Beginning to Look Like Christmas

(Even in July!)

First of all, I need to apologize for the title of today's post. Last year I posted about my disdain for those who try to link Christmas to July. I really, really despise that. Christmas is for cold weather. July is for hot weather. Never the twain should meet. You hear me? No twain meeting between Christmas and July!

Yet there it is in the title for today's post.

I am so ashamed and I throw myself on the mercy of blogger's court, if there is such a thing.

But the problem is, it fits.

OK, the actual event being described in today's post happened in June but I'm writing about it in July so...

Why am I explaining all this? Can't I just get on with it?

Fine, fine, no need to get so testy.

So here we are....

This is from the interior of a store called The Christmas Mouse. This location (yes, there is more than one) is located in North Myrtle Beach, most specifically a shopping center called Barefoot Landing which is built on and around a marsh. The turtles who live there seem OK with it. I'm not so sure about the alligators.

No, I'm not going to ask the alligators.

Anyway, The Christmas Mouse is jam packed with all sorts of decorations for the holiday season including a variety of tree ornaments.

And since you may have noticed that "Doctor Who" is in the title of today's post, you might surmise that we found Doctor Who ornaments at The Christmas Mouse.

And you would have surmised correctly.

For example, check out this Dalek.

And more Daleks!

And Davros too!

Although who would want Davros in their Christmas tree, I have no idea.

There were also ornaments of Cybermen (full body and Cyber heads for your own "Handles") and K-9. (Why didn't I get photos of those? Dang it!)

But then we found this wonderful item.

Geronimo! The 11th Doctor and the sonic screw driver! And thanks to my family, The Christmas Mouse sold TWO of these!

While my wife, child and I were just gushing and giggling over the Doctor Who ornaments....well, I wasn't giggling. I'm a man. Men do not giggle. It's just not done. No, I would not-

Yes, yes, I giggled.

Shut up.

Where was I? Oh, right!

Anyway, while the three of us were chattering about all these Whovian wonders of the season, two women approached us and one of them said, "So you're fans of Doctor Who, right?"

Affirming that we were indeed Doctor Who fans, she said, "Well, we're not exactly but my daughter, her sister-" (indicating the other woman) "is a BIG fan of the show and she would just love for us to get her a Doctor Who ornament. What would you suggest?"

The three of us agreed that of all the Doctor Who stuff there, you really couldn't beat the one-two combo of having the 11th Doctor AND a sonic screwdriver in one package. They took our advice and that was the Doctor Who thing they bought.

We also bought a Doctor/sonic combo along with a red Dalek.

One more photo before I wrap this up. It's not Doctor Who related but I still wanted to share it.

Now that's a big Christmas ball!

Oh, one more thing and it is Doctor Who related. The cashier who rang up our purchase was a fellow Whovian. How cool is that?

Until next time, remember to be good to one another.

Songs For Saturday: CHRISTMAS!

Today marks the last Songs For Saturday post for Christmas.

Thinking about what songs to select for today's play list, should I go pop or traditional or carols?

Or I should just go for weird!

Weird it is!

First up is that perennial seasonal classic "Baby It's Cold Outside" featuring GALBOR, THE ALL SEEING EYE!!!!

"GALBOR WILL MISS SONGS FOR SATURDAY!!!!"

Well, thank you, Galbor.

GALBOR HAS SPOKEN!!!

Yes, you have!

Here is another weird yuletide favorite of ye olde blog, "Sammy the Christmas Snake".

Think you understand what Christmas is all about? From the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, here is "I Don't Know What Christmas Is (But Christmastime Is Here)" to explain it all to you.

Do not mock this song! For all we know, Santa does have a flamethrower.

You just never know do you?

Well, that is that for this week. Remember to be good to one another and to always keep the music alive.

Next week, it's the series finale of Songs For Saturday.

GALBOR IS SAD!
