Well, fans of Doctor Who, the moment has arrived.
After months and months of anticipation, Ncuti Gatwa takes over in the TARDIS as the Doctor.
And we meet our next new companion, Millie Gibson as Ruby Sunday.
Enough with the nostalgia tour of the 60th Anniversary specials. It's time to move forward for real.
Are we ready?
This edition of Doctor Who Is NEW! takes a look at...
"The Church on Ruby Road"
by Russel T Davies
No post regenerative problems for this installment. Ncuti Gatwa is up and running as the Doctor as he investigates a web of weirdness surrounding a young woman named Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson).
Ruby has a bit of an origin mystery. Left as a newborn baby at on the steps of a church on Ruby Road, she has no idea about her parentage. Her adoptive mother (who took her in as a foster parent) provides a loving and supportive home for Ruby and the other children takes in temporarily as a foster parent.
Including her latest charge, an infant named Lulubelle.
Meanwhile, that "web of weirdness" is an incredible series of bad luck that's affecting Ruby and those around her. The "bad luck" is the result of the sneaky machinations of goblins.
The goblins abduct Lulubelle up a long ladder into the clouds.
Ruby goes in pursuit of the baby up the ladder.
And the Doctor joins the pursuit.
Up in the clouds is the goblin ship where we learn the intentions of the goblins for the baby.
In a song.
About eating a baby. Or specifically feeding the baby to the Goblin King!
The Doctor and Ruby intervene and announce their plans to save the baby.
In a song.
Really!
The Doctor and Ruby save Lulubelle! Yay!!
Then the goblins make a crack in time and....
Ruby vanishes and nobody remembers she ever existed.
Nooooo!!!!!
The goblins have gone back in time to retrieve baby Ruby from the steps of the church on Ruby Road.
Stand back! The Doctor is going to use SCIENCE! He pulls the goblin ship down from the sky and impales the Goblin King on the spire of the church on Ruby Road!
EPIC!
And he saves the baby!!!
Back in the present, Ruby still exists and all is as it should be.
But Ruby's wondering....
Who was that guy?
She rushes down to the street and enters a blue box that's bigger on the inside than is on the outside and...
The rest will have to wait until Spring 2024!
Damn it!!
Ncuti Gatwa is awesome as the Doctor! It's a unique take but with hints of other Doctors. (An encounter with a police officer at the start sees Ncuti channeling Chris Eccleston's 9th Doctor.)
Millie Gibson's Ruby Sunday looks to be a worthwhile addition to the pantheon of those lucky souls to be known as Doctor Who companions. She's human enough to be a little freaked out by the weird but strong enough to take a deep breath and face the weird.
Ncuti and Millie have great onscreen chemistry in their first outing with the potential of being one of the shows great Doctor/companion pairings.
There's a bit at the end after the TARDIS vanishes from outside Ruby's home and as a neighbor reacts with shock at the disappearing box, another neighbor, an older woman with white hair named Mrs. Flood looks right out at the screen and says, "It's like he's never seen a TARDIS before." Mrs. Flood is played by Anita Dobson, wife of Queen guitarist Brian May. And Mrs. Flood will apparently be reappearing.
So that's a thing.
And we'll have to wait until Spring 2024!!! Really?!?!?!
I'm really excited for what happens next.
And here's a teaser for the new season.
"Classic!!!!"
Remember to be good to one another
