Oddball Super Heroes: Matter Eater Lad

Hi there! Welcome to I'm So Glad My Suffering Amuses You, the blog with more fiber and few calories than the average blog. I'm Dave-El and would you like some fresh ground pepper?

Today is another installment of Oddball Super Heroes, a look at comic book super heroes with quirky powers. For the last few weeks, I've cast my gaze towards the future, 10 centuries into the future in fact to look at some of the stranger heroes that came out of DC Comics' Legion of Super Heroes

When you have a super team with the word "Legion" in the title, you're gonna have a lot of different characters, some of whom will have power sets that are just lame or very weird.

Today we look a character with one of the strangest powers of all. He even made it to full Legion membership without being forced to hang out with the rejects in the Legion of Substitute Heroes. Today, I present...

Matter Eater Lad!

Now, in case the subtlety of this character is lost on you, let me clarify that Matter-Eater Lad is a LAD who EATS MATTER.

And as you can see from the graphic above, it's a stupid looking power in action.

Matter-Eater Lad, real name Tenzil Kem, is from the planet Bismoll (really!) where all the natives possess the power to eat matter in all forms.

I would say, "You can't make this stuff up." But this is comic books; it's ALL made up.

Matter-Eater Lad joined the Legion of Super-Heroes soon after Bouncing Boy.*

*Once they let Bouncing Boy in, the Legion said, "Standards? We don't need no stinkin' standards!"

Matter-Eater Lad faced a double whammy of having a power that was ridiculous to look at in action but is also too formidable. The deal was Tenzil could eat through anything. So literally there was NOTHING that could stand in the Legion's way when Matter-Eater Lad was around.

"Oh no! A wall of pure neutronium!" "Don't worry! Matter-Eater Lad will eat it!"

"Oh no! We're trapped in a net made of pure steel!" "Don't worry! Matter-Eater Lad will eat it!"

"Oh no! We're encased in Venusian pig excrement!" "Don't worry! Matter-Eater Lad will....hey, where did Matter-Eater Lad go?"

Hey, even Matter-Eater Lad has to have some kind of limits, right?

Efforts were made to write Matter-Eater Lad out by drafting him into politics, making him a Senator on his home planet of Bismoll.**

**"Guys, I changed my mind about the Venusian pig excrement! Guys?!"

Later, Matter-Eater Lad came back to save the day by eating the Miracle Machine, a MACHINE that created MIRACLES (in case that got past you) that was being used to kill and destroy. This action left him insane. Of course that could've been from his time in the Bismoll Senate. Or the Venusian pig excrement.

There were later efforts to make Matter-Eater Lad more interesting and less awkward but no one really cares about that. He's a LAD that EATS MATTER and just leave it at that.

Next week, one more visit to the next millennium for a super powered dude that didn't make the grade for either the Legion or the Subs. In fact, as far as I know, he's made only one appearance. But he's a character that still captures my heart and my imagination after all these years.

There's another post coming up tomorrow. Until then, remember to be good to one another.

The Call Button That Does Not Call Anyone

Hi there! Welcome to I'm So Glad My Suffering Amuses You, the blog with a buy one/get one free special. I'm Dave-El and may I take your order please?

So this past weekend, I and the rest of the Els actually absconded from the Fortress of Ineptitude for the first time in over a month to dine out. Due to my illness for the last several weeks, we've been eating at home. My wife actually did some cooking which is a bit of a feat for her. It's not that she can't cook but that she takes so damn long doing it because she obsesses over details. If something takes a 1/2 cup of water, she will meticulously make sure there is exactly 1/2 cup of water in the measuring cup. "That looks more like 3/7 of a cup. Let's add a little itsy bitsy more water and...no, now it's 4/7 of a cup. Hold on, let's pour a little out. OK, it's short again. Better add a bit and....blast, too much!" And so on and so on.

When she didn't cook, it was take out and delivery. So after over a month of that, the idea of sitting down at a table somewhere not at home with a knife and a fork and a plate had a certain appeal. So Saturday we went to lunch at Red Robin.

Red Robin is a chain restaurant that features a variety of overpriced specialty burgers. It has the distinction of being relatively close to the family fortress and has a chicken tender meal that my daughter will actually eat. So off we went.

Over in Europe, you can find restaurants with kiosks right at the table where diners can pay their bill without a credit card being in the hands of waiters who maybe in the back making a mold of the card in Play-Do. This is starting to catch on in America and in particular, Red Robin.

I don't have a problem with this particular innovation. I'm all in favor of this development as a convenient and secure resource for paying via credit card. But this pay kiosk can be used for other functions such as summoning your server if you require their assistance. Which would be a good thing if it worked.

As we were nearing the end of our meal, we wanted to get a couple of drink refills to-go. Hey, at $4 for Freckled Lemonade, you get all you can get for the money. We also needed a to-go box as my daughter had not quite finished her meal.  So we pressed the call server button which caused a red light on the kiosk to blink. And we waited.

And we waited.

And we waited.

And then our waitress arrived.

No, I'm kidding. We waited.

And we waited.

OK, for real this time, our waitress shows up. But instead of asking how she may be of service, she immediately reaches for the kiosk and directs the device through the pay bill function. I guess she assumed we did not know how to pay a bill through this thing.

I had to interrupt her and explain we called her because we needed additional service. And we had been waiting for several minutes.

Our waitress apologized and explain the the "call server" function does not send any kind of an alert to the wait staff.

So let me get this straight. This kiosk thing has a "call server" button that actually does not CALL a server.  What the hell?

That bugged me and added to the bugging I was already feeling that the waitress had left us alone so long without checking on us and then presumed to know why we called her without first asking.

It was perhaps a minor transgression but since it was my first time eating out in a long time, I was particularly irked by it. It strikes me as the all too often failing of relying on technology to cover things we can't completely rely on.

Really, a call button that doesn't actually call anyone? Really?

And I'm so glad my suffering amuses you.

Money Can't Buy Me Love

We all know the old saying, "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again." The amendment to that is, "If you're still not succeeding, stop; you're making a damn fool of yourself."

This Saturday, former Florida governor Jeb Bush, after not succeeding in Iowa and trying again (New Hampshire) and again (South Carolina), decided it was time to stop making a damn fool of himself and dropped out of the race for the Republican nomination for President

I'm not saying that Jeb would've made a great President but of all the candidates that were still in the race before the South Carolina primary Saturday, Jeb had the most experience and was easily the best qualified of that group to be President.

A year ago there seemed to be a lot of support for a Jeb Bush run for President. Both the Bush campaign and the Super PAC associated with that campaign amassed tons of money. Jeb's advantage in money over other probable candidates like Scott Walker, Rick Perry, Chris Christie and others was almost insurmountable.

But Walker and Perry were out of the race months before the first vote was cast in Iowa and Christie was gone right after New Hampshire. And by the time Jeb Bush made it to South Carolina, the financial largess enjoyed by his campaign was nearly gone

So what went wrong?

A lot can be made of the baggage that came with the last name of Bush. Brother George W. served two terms but ended his time as President with the economy in collapse and the country mired in two wars, one of which was completely avoidable.

And something could be made of Jeb's lack of skills as a campaigner. Jeb seemed to struggle with questions that may have been tough but easily anticipatable.

But the big thing that laid low the candidacy of Jeb Bush (or, if you prefer, JEB!) is the threat that nipped at the heels of Mitt Romney in 2012, a threat that has gathered in strength and numbers over the last 2 decades. A threat the Republican Party created itself and now threatens the very existence and future of the party.
You can call it the Tea Party Movement but its a threat that has been growing since before the launch of that segment of the party. It is the threat of the hard right wing elements of the GOP.

For years, Republican candidates have emphasized an "us vs. them" mentality against the Democratic Party. It's not so much "vote for us because our way is better" but "vote for us because our way is right." Political opposition is cast as "enemies of America, people who hate America, deliberate destroyers of the American way."

This black and white view has moved from candidacies to actual governance. Compromise and negotiation became dirty words. Why would anyone compromise or negotiate when the other side are "enemies of America, people who hate America, deliberate destroyers of the American way."

The result of such a mind set is nothing gets done and that adds to the rage and fury of Americans who have been told over and over the other side is wrong.  Problems that may have negotiated solutions become intractable when negotiation is not an option.

So why doesn't someone just do something?

And along comes Donald Trump who sees an opportunity and seizes it. Donald appeals to those masses that the GOP has stirred up with a simple message: "I am going to fix it!"

How?

"By doing something!"

What?

"Who cares? It'll be something and it will be awesome and huge and you'll love me for it!"

Jeb Bush, policy wonk extraordinaire with his bullet pointed resume and his position papers, never stood a chance. Against the hyper cartoon that was Donald Trump, Bush with his millions in campaign funds could not buy the electorate's love.

It's a circumstance that was foreshadowed back in 2012 when Newt Gingrich snatched South Carolina away from Mitt Romney. Newt was riding a wave of hard right wing dissatisfaction with Romney.

Mitt was running against his own record as Governor of Massachusetts where he had launched a statewide health care reform plan that served as a model for President Obama's own national health care reform proposals.

But in 2012, Mitt Romney had racked up a win in New Hampshire and a strong organization in place for the long haul while Newt Gingrich basically had enough in him to win South Carolina and that was it. In 2016, Jeb Bush was already marginalized even before Iowa and Donald Trump took South Carolina with a win in New Hampshire and a 2nd place finish in Iowa already in his back pocket.

So Saturday night, Jeb Bush saw there was no further need to make a damn fool of himself and dropped out of the race. Which is really messed up. Because for all his shortcomings, Jeb is not the damn fool of the Republican Party

The damn fool is the one who is winning.

Jeb Bush: exit stage right

That's that for today. Another blog post is up tomorrow. Until then, remember to be good to one another.

Doctor Who: The Chris Chibnall Episodes

Hi there! Dave-El here and welcome to a brand new post to my blog, I'm So Glad My Suffering Amuses You

Among my varied interests is the BBC series Doctor Who. I tend to posts stuff about Doctor Who on Sundays but I've kind of taken a break from that for a couple of weeks. But I thought I would jump back into that pattern a bit with today's post.

As is the timey-wimey nature of Doctor Who, today's post looks to the future by way of the past. Several weeks ago, it was announced that Chris Chibnall would take over as Executive Producer and Head Writer of Doctor Who as of 2018. Naturally, the question arises what kind of show will Doctor Who be under Chibnall? To provide some context for that speculation, let's let a look at what Chris has already done for the show.

From 2007 to 2012, Chris Chibnall has written 5 full episodes of Doctor Who and written 2 mini-episodes. So I've ranked these 7 contributions from worst to first to see if we can get some insight as to what Chibnall brings to Doctor Who.

"The Power of Three" (2012)
This episode is a prime example of a Doctor Who episode that starts off with a charming premise but then takes a sharp turn towards the dark and undermines the whole thing. In the case of this episode, it is a very interesting look at how the lives of the Doctor and his companions intersect. I'm not sure if I should give the benefit of the doubt to Chibnall that the stronger first half was mostly him and that the sudden shift in tone in the 2nd half owes to production interference. I have a feeling someone realized, "Hey, we're running out of time and/or money! We need to wrap this up NOW!" If this was the case, it does seem that Chibnall is certainly good at character development but may have some problems with wrapping up a story on the fly.

"Cold Blood" (2010)
This is the 2nd half of the two parter from Series 5 that brought the Silurians back to the revived series. Part 2 suffers from what a lot of TV shows (not just Doctor Who) run into: after setting up everything in Part 1, what to do next.  It's not a bad episode but a lot of the mood and tension developed in Part 1 cannot be sustained through Part 2. Still, we see good character work from Chibnall in developing the supporting cast for this story.

"P.S." (2012)
This was a mini-episode intended as a coda to The Angels Take Manhattan where Amy and Rory's adopted son meets Rory's dad to explain what happened to them. Limits in time and money meant that the episode was not shot but presented as a bonus feature with recorded dialogue over storyboards. In it's raw and incomplete form, PS is hard to judge but once again, we witness a very touching character interaction as scripted by Chibnall.

"Pond Life" (2012)
This was a series of 5 mini-episodes, no more than 1 or 2 minutes each. The first four are a lighthearted look at the Doctor's life running parallel to the events of Amy and Rory's lives on Earth. The 5th installment takes a dark and depressing turn. Once more, like The Power of Three, I think Chibnall had to respond to an edict outside of his original concept since Part 5 of Pond Life has to set up the status quo of Amy and Rory's disintegrated marriage that we see at the start of Steven Moffat's Asylum of the Daleks. Of course Chibnall would've known that going in so perhaps this falls on Chibnall for not seeding things better in the first four parts.

"The Hungry Earth" (2010)
This kicks off the return of the the Silurians to the revived Doctor Who. Time is spent getting to know our supporting players for this particular drama which is important if we're going to care about them. Their decisions and actions are important to driving this story forward. But this development of the guest stars does not come at the expense of the Doctor, Amy and Rory. And then there's the story itself, the ominous threat from beneath the earth itself and from the Silurians, filled with tension punctuated with action. As noted above, Part 2 does not quite stick the landing but Part 1 is a very effective set up.

"42" (2007)
This is Chris Chibnall's one entry for Doctor Who that is not for the 11th Doctor and under Steven Moffat. With Russell T Davies at the helm and David Tennant as the 10th Doctor, this is a gripping tale of interstellar terror that is told over the real time span of 42 minutes. The real time concept adds to the tension but works against character development. Still, the guest stars for this episode avoid cookie cutter status despite the rush and the Doctor and Martha are well represented as they each seek to do what they can to help this crew and each other.
I actually debated whether I wanted to put 42 in the top spot but ultimately, I gave this Series 8 episode the nod for first. There's so much to love about this story, the kick ass Egyptian queen, the droll African game hunter, Rory's too sweet for words dad and DINOSAURS! On a SPACESHIP! This episode is a rollicking good time with some sharp crackling character banter and some far out sci-fi concepts. Once again, it may be noted, that the story does take a sharp turn towards the dark side with the revelation of the total genocide of the Silurians who had been on board and the Doctor's rather cold blooded resolution for the bad guy. In this case, the dark turn seems less abrupt and more organically part of the story.

So from these episodes of Doctor Who, I imagine we can expect an emphasis on character development under Chris Chibnall as show runner. I would expect less of the fairy tale elements that Moffat introduced during his run and more of an emphasis on more straightforward science fiction. But will we have a show that is darker in tone as many of the above Chibnall scripts tends towards that. But again, how much of those shifts in tone were from Chibnall and how much from outside direction?

We've got a long time more to speculate on a Chris Chibnall Doctor Who. After all, Steven Moffat isn't done yet.

OK, that's that for today. Tomorrow is a post on some darn thing or another. Please pop by and see what I slap together for that. In the meantime, remember to be good to one another.

Ted Cruz Is a Lying Fuck Bastard - Part 5

Greetings, my blog reading friend. I'm Dave-El and I welcome you to my blog, I'm So Glad My Suffering Amuses You.

I would like to start today's post with an apology that yet again I'm posting another edition of TED CRUZ IS A LYING FUCK BASTARD.  The original intent was I would post this once a week with maybe one or two examples per post.

But since January 29th when I posted part 1 of this series, today marks the 5th appearance of TED CRUZ IS A LYING FUCK BASTARD. And if you add to special post to Iowa caucus voters on February 1st, that SIX posts on what a lying fuck bastard Ted Cruz is. That averages to about a post every 4 to 5 days on this subject. So, sorry, here it is again today. Why?

Today is the South Carolina Republican Primary and Ted is still up to his same old lying fuck bastard tricks as you will see as we proceed through today's edition of...

Without further delay, let's move forward with today's analysis. We've got a lot of ground to cover as we touch base on topics like relations with Cuba, support for firefighters and particularly first responders from 9/11, the continuing kerfuffle over the Supreme Court vacancy, gay marriage and dirty political tricks.

Cuba
A few years ago, President Obama made the historic announcement that he would normalize relations with Cuba. Sen Ted Cruz (R-TX) took exception to this plan of action, calling the communist country “a leading state sponsor of terrorism.”

Yes, it’s true that Cuba — along with Iran, Syria and Sudan — is listed by the State Department as one of four State Sponsors of Terrorism.” But the department’s annual Country Report on Terrorism provided little evidence of Cuba sponsoring terrorism, especially compared with the extensive portfolio of the others on that list.

In fact, the State Department report said: “There was no indication that the Cuban government provided weapons or paramilitary training to terrorist groups.” It did note that Cuba has historic “ties” to two regional terrorist groups: Basque Fatherland and Liberty (ETA) in Spain and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). But Cuba’s ties with the ETA “have become more distant,” and it has supported and hosted peace talks between FARC and the government of Colombia, the report said.

Maybe back in the day when Cuba was benefiting from the largess of the USSR, it could afford to be more involved in other national affairs. But today's Cuba does not possess those same resources.

With the recent announcement of President Obama's plan to visit Cuba, look for Ted to revisit this material. He is consistent.

Firefighters and 9/11 First Responders
During Ted Cruz's victory speech after his win in the Iowa caucus,  Cruz invoked the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the work of the first responders. "To the police officers, and the firemen and the first responders, the heroes who rushed in to burning buildings instead of out of burning buildings -- the last seven years of having a president, having an attorney general that demonizes you, that vilifies you, that sides with the criminals and looters instead of the brave men and women of law enforcement -- that will end on Jan. 20, 2017."

This particularly irked Harold Schaitberger, president of the International Association of Fire Fighters. "He said he embraces fire fighters and the dangerous work they do, says he’s our friend and calls himself a great patriot. But when it came time to actually have the backs of fire fighters across the U.S., he was AWOL." What Schaitberger refers to is Cruz's opposition to reauthorizing the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, which provides health care for those same firefighters and first responders. More than 72,000 people are monitored by the 9/11 health program, and 33,000 ailing responders rely on it for treatment.

Schaitberger added, "Cruz is the worst kind of politician who will say or do anything to get elected."

Supreme Court Vacancy
Sen. Ted Cruz has had some help from fellow GOP Presidential candidate Sen. Marco Rubio on the subject of distorting the history of Supreme Court appointments in arguing that President Obama should not be allowed to fill the vacancy left by the death of Supreme Court Justice Antonin ScaliaThey say there’s “a long tradition” and historical “precedent” for presidents not to fill a Supreme Court vacancy in their last year in office or during an election year.

But there are no rules, laws, regulations, formal guidelines or suggestions written on the back of a cocktail napkin to support that this is an actual thing. The "precedent" of not having Supreme Court nominations owes more to a lack of opportunity. In fact, in the rare cases where a vacancy on the Supreme Court needed to be filled in an election year, the sitting President put forth a nominee, the Senate reviewed said nominee and, except for 1968, confirmed the nominee as appointed to the Supreme Court.

What makes Cruz's part of this particularly egregious is the fact that Cruz served as a clerk in the Supreme Court and should really understand how these things work.

For more on this story, click here

Gay Marriage
While Cruz and Rubio are in lock step on the appointment issue, don't think Cruz isn't above or beneath throwing some lies Rubio's way.

Sen. Ted Cruz said Sen. Marco Rubio believes that the Supreme Court decision on gay marriage “is the settled law of the land and we must … surrender and move on."

On the day of the court ruling, Rubio said he disagreed with it and argued that the U.S. Constitution gives states – not the federal government or courts – the power to define marriage. He said the next president should “nominate judges and justices committed to applying the Constitution as written.” In December, Rubio said the decision is not “settled law” and can be overturned, promising to “appoint Supreme Court justices that will interpret the Constitution as originally constructed.”

For more on this story, click here.

And Cruz ain't done with Rubio yet.

More Rubio Under the Bus
From the Cruz camp is an image of Marco Rubio shaking hands with President Obama in front of the Capitol in Washington. On the right side, these words are etched into the picture: “The Rubio-Obama Trade Pact.” It is a reference to a Senate vote Mr. Rubio cast in favor of granting Mr. Obama the authority to negotiate a global trade agreement. As it happens, Mr. Cruz voted for the same legislation, but later reversed course when it came up for a second vote.

1) The photo is fake. (Very badly faked, actually.) The Rubio campaign even says that Rubio's head is attached to someone else's body.
2) The global trade agreement was actually something that most Republicans were in favor of voting for as opposed to most Democrats. Yes, it was something that Obama was getting more grief from his own party than the GOP.
3) It was not some specific joint effort between Sen. Rubio and the White House. Rubio was just one of many Republicans who voted in favor of the trade agreement.

Whew! C'mon, Ted. Having to post all these lies and deceptions is exhausting. But I gotta make sure the word stays out there that....

TED CRUZ IS A LYING FUCK BASTARD

The State of Things

Hi there! Dave-El here and welcome to I'm So Glad My Suffering Amuses You. And to my readers in Norway, velkommen til jeg er så Glad for min lidelse morer deg.

I'm finally kicking loose from the pneumonia that has plagued me (PLAGUED ME!) for the last three weeks. I've had pneumonia before, back in 2007. I remembered the experience was a bit more intense (coughing, fever, etc, were stronger) but not lasting as long (I was back to work after about 10 days.)

The most basic element in fighting off pneumonia is rest and it seemed that was something I really had a hard time doing this time. Despite various meds designed to help me sleep, I never felt truly at rest. My head would hit the pillow and within seconds, I would have a major coughing fit that would make my eyes water and leave me gasping for breath. I think I could've kicked this a lot sooner if I could've gotten some proper rest.

Life, as they say, is what happens when you make other plans. And I definitely had other plans, particularly relating to the change in status quo regarding my mother.

As I've mentioned in prior posts, my mom has been in declining health for sometime due to advancing dementia. Efforts to help keep her in her own home were running up against several limits including financial assistance. I was paying out of pocket for in home care that only provided assistance to my mom for a few hours a day.

The thing is my mom is not that far gone. There are moments when she is as sharp and aware and funny as she has ever been. But there were too many moments where she was clearly unable to tend to herself or make sure she was taking her medications. And the family was reaching the limits of what could be done to help her.

This meant going into assisted living. This was not a decision that was entered into lightly. My mom has a perfectly fine home to live in and it wasn't like she was completely incapable all the time. But the assessment of her doctors were consistent and firm on this point: without round the clock access to aid and assistance, we would be looking at mom going into hospice within the coming year. Her dementia was deteriorating too greatly.

Talking to my mom on this subject was probably one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. I had to make the case for a course of action that I was not entirely sure I wanted to take. Slowly but surely, she made peace with the fact that she couldn't live on her own and we had no options to keep her in her own home.

Others in the family were less at peace with this. I spent a good deal of time outside my mom's house pacing about in the cold air engaged in emotional discussions about what to do about mom. (And that's probably where my pneumonia took root.) Family who watched over my mother consistently were on board with getting her into assisted living while others who were less involved seemed to think mom was being rushed into something. From what I understand, this is not an uncommon family dynamic when someone needs to go into assisted living or a nursing home.

My plan was to visit my mom at least every week or two and keep an eye on the house. Then pneumonia sets in and so much for those plans. Reports from my family is after about 3 weeks, my mom seems to have settled into the rhythm of life in her new circumstances. The first week was pretty hard and she was mad at a lot of people for putting her there, me included. But she's made friends and she gets consistent help with her medicines and health care. All told, it appears the right decision was made.  But even in retrospect, it was still a hard decision.

So that is the state of things for my mom and myself. Me, I've got to get back into my own rhythm of sleeping at night and working during the day. I really need to get back into a comfortable routine. Let's see what I can do about that.

Unless life has other plans.

Everyone, be good to one another.

And to my readers in Norway: Alle, være godt Ã¥ hverandre.
