Moore Vs. Jones

Yesterday was Tuesday, December 12th which was significant as the day of Alabama’s special election to select a new Senator. You know, the one with Democrat Doug Jones and Republican Statutory Rapist…ooops, sorry. Typo.  I meant, Republican Roy Moore.

Now, to be fair, the accusations against Roy Moore were just that, accusations. Granted, accusations from credible witnesses but nothing proven in a court of law so for me to snark off by referring to Moore as Republican Statutory Rapist is a bit unfair.

Particularly when there was so much else about Roy Moore that we know of for absolutely sure that is cause for alarm. His fanatical devotion to extremist Christian conservative ideology over American law. Look, if Moore wants to view gay people as spawns of the devil, you know, go on and let him. He can take those views and run for church deacon or become a church pastor. But as a Senator, your constituents should be more than your fellow extremist Christian conservative ideologues.  But make no mistake, Roy Moore’s myopia did not extend beyond that narrow definition.

Which may well explain Moore’s ultimate loss on Tuesday night. Despite its rep that Alabama is a bed rock of Christian conservative values, I imagine that some Christians realized that Moore’s brutally harsh view of Christian faith did not represent them. Even if there were doubts about the accusation against Moore, his response to his accusers were as much an embarrassment as the accusations against him. Roy Moore’s utter disdain for anyone who does not capitulate to his world view was remarkable in it clarity. There’s no guess work in assessing Roy Moore’ views of anyone who dared to differ from his fanatical devotion to extremist Christian conservative ideology. What and who Roy Moore stood for was clearly defined and understood. Which left a lot of Alabama citizens out of that rigidly defined circle.

Over in the White House, Li’l Donnie trump will fuss and fume like the spoiled little man brat he is and he’ll set fire to his base to avenge a loss he will accept no culpability for. And if the Republican Party sighs with relief over the bullet they dodged by Roy Moore not getting elected to the Senate, I’m sure the Democrats will work to the keep the memory of what almost happened alive.
