While Randie was visiting us over the weekend, we ventured forth from the Fortress of Ineptitude to go see the new DreamWorks animated film, Abominable.
Yi is a teenage girl living in Shanghai and she’s got a lot
on her mind. Still at loose ends since the death of her father, Yi spends every
waking moment being busy, hustling dozens of odd jobs, dog walking, baby
sitting, taking out garbage. She’s looking to earn as much money as she can. She
has a plan to take the trip across China that her father dreamed of. When she’s
not in a constant state of motion during the day, she spends her nights on the
roof of her apartment building, playing the violin her father gave her.
One night on the roof, Yi is joined by a Yeti.
The Yeti is being hunted by Burnish, a wealthy man intent on
capturing a Yeti, and zoologist Dr. Zara who is not what she seems to be.
As helicopters pass overhead, Yi does what she can to keep
the Yeti (whom she names “Everest”) hidden but if you’ve ever tried to hide a Yeti
on a roof, well, it’s not something you can do for long. Sinister forces are at
work to reclaim Everest so Yi finds herself on an epic quest to get her magical
Yeti friend back home. She’s joined in
this journey by Jin, a teenage boy obsessed with his social media standing, and
Peng, a young boy with big dreams of being a big basketball star despite his
short stature.
Abominable covers some decidedly familiar ground as Yi and
her friends accompany Everest on a wild journey towards his home. But while the
ground may be familiar, Abominable covers it in style with beautifully
rendered animation bringing to life a
story told with humor and humanity.
Abominable is a story with heart and it's gorgeous to look at too.
