This (Non) Sporting Life: Duke Wins the ACC!

It's time now for another installment of This (Non) Sporting Life, the blog post about sports written by a guy who knows little about sports.

The Saturday movie night at the Fortress of Ineptitude was replaced with SPORTSBALL!!!

Specifically the final game of the ACC Men's Basketball Tournament with the Duke Blue Devils vs. the Virginia Cavaliers.

For some reason, the Cavaliers are called "hoos".

Why?

Official University of Virginia sports documents explain that Washington and Lee baseball fans first called University of Virginia players "a bunch of rowdy Wahoos," and used the "Wahoowa" yell as a form of derision during the in-state baseball rivalry in the 1890s, presumably after hearing them yell or sing "wa-hoo-wa."

The term "Wahoos" spread around the University and was commonly in use by the 1940s. "'Hoos" emerged as an equally commonly accepted nickname on the university Grounds (campus) and in student publications. In recent years, the Hoos nickname has become a nickname used by students and recent alumni of the University, and it is also commonly used in the media in reference to U.Va. sports teams.

Which is more than you wanted to know.

I know I lost interest about halfway through that.

Despite coming into the tournament as a top seed and a dominating record of play, Virginia never led the entire game.

Under Duke's first year head coach Jon Scheyer, Duke held off  Virginia for a 59-49 win in the title game to complete three wins in three days right here in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Duke freshman Kyle Filipowski earned ACC Tournament MVP honors. Whenever Filipowski makes a big play, I like to punch up his name as FiliPOW!ski! It is ever so much fun.

FiliPOW!ski!

Andrea watched the tournament championship game with me even though she lost her enthusiasm for college basketball after her Carolina Tarheels got sent off early with a loss on Thursday night which is expected to polish off any chances at NCAA Tournament play.

During Carolina games, the announcers talked a lot about lemon Oreos which appears the be the favored snack of the team or something?

For the record, Andrea and I both like lemon Oreos.

Anyway, Duke's season is not over as the NCAA Men's Tournament is next, heading into the big dance with an ACC Tournament Championship pushing them forward.

DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUKE, BABY!!!!!!!
