Tuesday TV Touchbase: Lucifer, Doom Patrol and Bones

Before we get down to this week's Touchbase, a moment for news from the Star Trek universe that Star Trek Discovery will be ending with season 5.

I suppose conservatives out there will celebrate the end of the "Woke" Star Trek, you know, with the captain who is black AND female, the married gay couple and their non-binary daughter.

After stumbling badly through it's first season or two, Discovery has evolved into a tap flight representation of Gene Roddenberry's original vision of Star Trek.

While the cancellation is a shame, I don't feel it was a surprise. I kind of had a sense the shoe was going to drop on this iteration of Star Trek. What I did NOT expect was that the 5th season would be delayed until 2024? Really?!?!

That seems to be to be quite a ridiculous and unnecessary delay.

Andrea and I are continuing with Lucifer. Every Friday night, we watch 2 episodes, maybe 3.  We are now 2  episodes away from the end of season 5 and then after season 6, well...

We're not sure what we're going to do with our Friday nights.

I complained earlier in our watching Lucifer how Cloe Decker was outside the loop that when Lucifer Morningstar says he is the Devil, he really is the Devil. We've now reached the point where everyone except Ella Lopez is in the inner circle of who is  a celestial.  Hell, even Dan knows now.

He did not react well.

The cast of celestials has expanded with the sneaky plotting shenanigans of Lucifer's twin brother, Michael. (Tom Ellis hunching his shoulders and sporting an American accent.)

And no less that dear old Dad has put in an appearance. Yep, God is on Earth. (Courtesy of Allstate spokesperson Dennis Haysbert.)

While the whole mythology surrounding Lucifer Morningstar takes up more space in season 5, we still have murders for Cloe and Lucifer to solve.

Seriously, what are we going to do when we finish Lucifer?

Speaking of solving murders, I'm still watching Bones although not in order.  I'm catching up on whatever happens to be showing on BBC America, WE TV or Cozi.

It's kind of weird to bounce back and forth between Brennan & Booth should be a couple to Brennan & Booth are married with 2 kids.

There are some episodes I'm seeking out that I missed before such as "The Cinderella in the Cardboard" which features a pre-Big Bang Theory appearance by Mayim Bialik.

Meanwhile, I'm on a personal watch project to catch up on Doom Patrol.   While cited (correctly) as being created by Arnold Drake, Bob Haney and Bruno Premiani, Much of what drives the TV series are concepts created by writer Grant Morrison.

  • Mr. Nobody, an omnipresent supervillain capable of traveling through dimensions, altering reality and totally aware of being in "a streaming television series watched primarily by Grant Morrison fans".
  • Kay Challis aka Crazy Jane, a woman with 64 personalities, each with their own super power.
  • The concept that Cliff Steele is a human brain in a metal container that still remembers what it's like to be hungry for food, needing to take a dump and having sex which is more than enough make a human brain in a metal container really fucking angry and really fucking crazy.
  • Danny the Street, the magical gender queer avenue that can appear anywhere in the world to protect the world's lost and cast away people.
The Doom Patrol may be a team of beings with powers and abilities beyond mere mortals but they are not super heroes. Yeah, they save the world a time or two but mostly by accident. Most of the time, Doom Patrol is more about how totally fucked these people are, how they got to be so fucked up and can they do fuck all about it going forward.

People say "fuck" a lot in this show, especially Cliff, the erstwhile Robotman.

My journey with Doom Patrol will be finite since the show's 4th season will be it's last.

Coming up on future posts of the ol' Touchbase (but in no particular order):

  • The Mandalorian
  • Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur
  • Superman & Lois

PLUS more about Star Trek Picard, Quantum Leap, Night Court and Young Sheldon.

And coming up in April, the last season of the Marvelous Mrs, Maisel

Until next time, remember to be good to one another and try to keep it down in there, would ya? I'm trying to watch TV over here.

Tuesday TV Touchbase: Ghosts

Ghosts wrapped up it's 3rd season last week. In a strike shortened season with only 10 episodes, a lot of ground still got covered.  ...
