Songs For Saturday: The Music Of Blondie

Today's Songs For Saturday spotlights the music of Blondie.'

Fronted by singer Debbie Harry, Blondie was a pioneer in the American new wave scene of the mid-1970s in New York.

"One Way or Another" was inspired by Debbie's experience with a stalker in the early 1970s, an incident which forced her to move away from New Jersey.

So the experience wasn't all bad? It did get her out of New Jersey? OK, not funny. Sorry.

"One Way or Another" was a favorite for us to play on Guitar Here here at the Fortress of Ineptitude.

Blondie was inspired to create songs with all sorts of musical styles.  From hard driving progressive rock of
"One Way or Another" to the reggae influence of their cover of "The Tide Is High". Blondie was willing to try almost anything.

Blondie's experimentation led them to rap. When it came time to expose the world to the African American sound of hip-hop, a blonde white woman led the way with "Rapture".

OK, that is, as they say, that for today's Songs For Saturday and the music of Blondie.

Tomorrow's Cinema Sunday will feature the movies of Blondie.

Spoiler: it's a different Blondie.

Until next time, remember to be good to one another and to always keep the music alive.
