Welcome to This (Non) Sporting Life, a blog post about sports written by a guy who doesn't know a lot about sports.
Today's topic: the Atlanta Braves win the World Series.
Which is... well, great for them.
My wife Andrea stayed up Tuesday to watch the Braves win the series winning game, long after I gave up and went to bed.
I am of the mindset that sports teams will win or lose whether I am watching them or not.
Andrea is staring intently at the TV, shooting concern rays from her eyes, daring to control the game.
The Atlanta Braves are big for our respective families. My mother who had zero interest in sports decked her house with Braves merchandise.
She was a big follower of long time Braves legend Otis Nixon who was born in Evergreen, North Carolina, not far from my mom's home. Poor bastard had to put up with a lot of shit, a black man in the heart of the racist south and on top of that, he had a cocaine habit.
My mom took this native son player to her heart and rooted for him whenever he was on the field.
Andrea's parents were dedicated followers of the Atlanta Braves as well.
If I had any interest in the World Series at all, it was to see that the Houston Astros went down after the scandal of them stealing signs in 2017.
Stealing signs is dangerous. Someone could drive right into oncoming traffic if a stop sign is missing or into a train if a railroad crossing sign is...
Hold on. I'm being told that's not what stealing signs means.
OK but still, fuck the Astros if for no other reason than to deny Gov. Abbott any bragging rights.
Oh, speaking of skeevy politicians...
Donald Trump attended a game. I saw a lot of headlines about how Trump was caught doing the racist Tomahawk chop.
Well, I hate to cut Li'l Donnie a break of any kind but EVERYBODY was doing the racist Tomahawk chop.
The other thing about Trump's visit to the World Series was Melania standing next to him with a broad smile on her face. For all of like 3 seconds. She soon reached an expression of "Ugh! Who do I need to kill to get out of here."
Oh, one more thing about Trump's visit to the World Series: he insisted he was invited by Major League Baseball.
Major League Baseball issued a rebuttal that no they didn't.
Enough of this fucker.
The World Series win for the Atlanta Braves was a wonderful tribute to the memory of the greatest Braves player of all time, Hammerin' Hank Aaron who died earlier this year at the age of 86, still pulling for his team.
The Braves have not always had the best go of it. Back in 1988, Star Trek: The Next Generation aired an episode that features an unfrozen country singer from the 20th century who figures that after several hundred years, the Braves were still finding ways to lose.
Back in the 1980's, Ted Turner owned the Atlanta Braves, a woebegone ragtag team that sucked really bad.
He also owned TBS, a national cable channel that needed to fill time between reruns of Gilligan's Island and the Brady Bunch.
So the Atlanta Braves got to be a woebegone ragtag team that sucked really bad with a national audience.
Things eventually got better.
Anyway, congratulation to the Atlanta Braves for winning the 2021 World Series.
