It's TIME FOR CRIME for this week's Tuesday TV Touchbase.
She's a former actress turned homicide detective.
He's the Prince of Darkness, ruler of Hell.
Together.....they solve crimes.
Say hello to Lucifer.
1) I can't believe my wife Andrea is along for this particular TV viewing journey. Given her particular traditionalist background in matters of faith and religion, that she's watching a TV series that is literally sympathy for the Devil is a most fascinating development.
2) Tom Ellis as Lucifer is charming, I'll grant you that.
3) Interesting thing about Lucifer is he doesn't lie about who he is. He will tell anyone who is listening that he is the Devil. No one believes him, assuming him to be delusional or pulling off a marketing scheme for his nightclub, Lux or he's just being... British?
4) There are ongoing storylines involving Lucifer interacting with other supernatural beings but the show is most interesting to me when it focuses on Lucifer's relationship with Chloe Decker (who he refers to mostly as "Detective") as they solve the murder of the week.
Next up on TIME FOR CRIME....
She's a scientist who is a firm believer in facts and science.
He's an FBI agent with a religious faith and follows his gut.
Together.....they solve crimes.
Say hello to Bones.
1) Bones ran for 12 damn years on Fox so there's a lot to pick from in the syndicated reruns popping up on BBC America. The show centers around a science institute that helps the FBI solves murders where the body is in a really bad condition.
2) Dr.Temperance Brennan (the "Bones" of the show's title) is played by Emily Deschanel, sister of America's sweetheart Zooey Deschanel. You can really see the family resemblance in the eyes. Brennan is prone to the occasional malapropism when it comes to slang and is frequently clueless regarding pop culture. But she is not an automaton; she has her own quirky sense of humor and is constantly haranguing Booth to let her join him when it's time to bust a perp.
3) Agent Seeley Booth (no one calls him "Seeley") is played by David Boreanz who I first encountered as Angel in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Booth can fairly open minded when it comes to accepting the scientific tactics of Brennan and her team of eggheads. Mostly. There have been episodes where Booth is too broadly written to be the voice of "clueless" audience who may not be able to keep up with Brennan and her team.
4) Brennan's team of scientists and experts are extraordinarily good at their job and reconstructing the identities of murder victims, how they were killed and who killed them. But they have developed characterizations; they are not just plot devices.
5) Gross out factor: most of the time, the murder victim of the week has been dead for awhile so there are a lot of images of desiccated corpses and battered skeletons. I don't mean a quick pan over a morgue table either. Brennan and her team are picking over the victim in excruciating detail so lots of close ups of cracked bone and rotted flesh so.... eww!
And that is that for this week's TIME FOR CRIME!
Next week, the ol' Tuesday TV Touchbase will cover whatever the hell happened with season 3 of Umbrella Academy.
And after that, we catch up to season 3 of The Orville.
Until next time, remember to be good to one another and try to keep it down in there, would ya? I'm trying to watch TV over here.
