Edmund Fitzgerald

I am a frequent visitor to the video links for live coverage of the the canal that connects Lake Superior to the harbor of Duluth, MN.

Today was a somber day of remembrance for those who call Duluth home and others from around the world familiar with the maritime history of Lake Superior.

The SS Edmund Fitzgerald

50 years ago on November 10th, the SS Edmund Fitzgerald sank during a particularly violent storm, taking the 29 souls aboard to an icy watery grave.

The terrible tale of the ship's fatal fate was immortalized in a song by Canadian musician Gordon Lightfoot.

Gordon's lyrics are powerfully evocative of the cutting cold of the November storm and the bravery of the ship's captain and crew. It's hard not feel a lump in the throat thinking about this most tragic of events.

I watched some of the memorial service commerating the 50th anniversary of the loss of the Edmund Fitzgerald and the 29 lives lost on that tragic day.

This is a poignant reminder of strong men who did hard work and fought against the powerful forces of an angry lake, ultimately giving their lives.

Lives that 50 years later have not been forgotten.
