Doctor Who: What's Next? or Rumors Amuck!

While we're in the middle of Series 11 with 5 more episodes to go, we can't help but ponder the future of Doctor Who.

We discussed on this blog on Tuesday the news that Doctor Who will not have a Christmas special for 2018.  There really hasn't been any formal word on this but the scuttlebutt is that there is going to be an 11th episode after the 10 episodes of Series 11 are done and that it will air on New Year'a Day, 2019.

As of now, the BBC has not issued any formal statement on the presence or absence of Doctor Who from TV screens on Christmas Day.

But if the bonus episode does air on New Year'a Day, 2019, there is a concern that it may be the ONLY episode that airs in 2019.

Wait! What?

Yeah, there's a rumor going around about a gap year between Series 11 and Series 12 with the latter not appearing until 2020.

What's up with that?

As far as I know, production has not begun on Series 12 which is cause for concern.  This time last year, production was underway on Series 11 and even with that lead time, the new episodes were not ready to be delivered until a whole year later, in October 2018.

In 2015, as Series 9 was winding down, I noticed there was no word that production had begun on Series 10. I wondered then if there was anyway Series 10 could be delivered in 2016 with such a late start. Eventually, my worries were confirmed and the announcement was made that Series 10 would not debut until 2017.

While the lack of episodes in 2016 was quite annoying, at least it came after 6 years of Steven Moffat at the helm and 2 years with Peter Capaldi as the Doctor.

A gap year in 2019 would be more problematic in that we would have only had 1 year of Chris Chibnall as show runner and 1 year with Jodie Whitaker as the Doctor. That's too slim of an experience to then ask fans to wait a whole year before getting another batch of episodes.

Maybe with all the kinks worked out by the new crew in getting Series 11 off the ground, perhaps Series 12 could be delivered in 2019 with a later start. Again, there is not official word from the BBC on this but I'm deeply concerned that there may be some truth to the 2019 gap year rumor.

Also up in the air is the fate of the Doctor's current crew of travellers in the TARDIS.  Again, the rumor is that the gang of Graham, Ryan and Yaz are only going to be around for one season.

Man, I hate rumors!

Let's just enjoy the show, eh?

Tonight, tune in for Demons of the Punjab and I will endeavor to have a write up on it here in this space by Monday.

Until next time, remember to be good to one another.
