MERRY CHRISTMAS! And welcome to another installment of COUNTDOWN TO CHRISTMAS!!!!!
Today’s Christmas movie is The Santa Clause!
It’s
the only Christmas movie I know of where the premise requires Santa Claus to
DIE!
This
was made back in 1990s when Tim Allen was on top with a hit TV show Home
Improvement and movies like Toy Story and Galaxy Quest. So I’m sure it seemed
like a good idea to have Tm Allen become Santa Claus.
But how we get there? Wow!
But how we get there? Wow!
Tim
plays a put upon single dad who has to take over as Santa Claus after good ol’
Saint Nick falls off his roof and DIES! Because he found the now DEAD Santa
Claus, the magical suit passes on to him (a magical rule known as “the Santa clause”….get
it?) and Tim starts gaining weight, his hair turns white and he keeps growing a
beard. Despite efforts at exercising, hair dye and shaving, Tim Allen is
turning into Santa Claus to replace the previous one who is now DEAD.
I really can’t stress this enough: in order to advance the plot and have Tim Allen become Santa Claus, the original Santa Claus has to DIE!
And
he DIES falling off a rooftop! Rooftops are Santa’s jam! He lands on rooftops! He
walks, dances and skips on rooftops! But this time, he falls off one and
DIES!!!
The
Santa Clause was a success and spun off two sequels. The third one is that in
order to stay Santa Claus, Tim needs to get married!
Yes,
the plot of the 3rd Santa Clause movie is that Santa needs to get
laid!
It’s
been years since I’ve seen The Santa Clause. As much as I can be a grumpy curmudgeon
when it comes to Christmas, I still have issues with watching Santa Claus
DIE!
Today’s Christmas song is another one from Saturday Night Live, an oddball number featuring Horatio Sanz, Jimmy Fallon, Chris Katan and Tracy Morgan.
“I
Wish It Was Christmas Today” has been replicated many times, even as the 4
members of this troupe have moved on from the cast of SNL.
I
like that Tracy Morgan takes time out of his schedule to return for a
performance of this song to do… whatever the hell he does.
I saw an interview with Chris Kattan who was on a movie set and took time out to fly back to New York City to hold a keyboard and turn his head back and forth for 2 minutes.

And
now it’s DOCTOR WHO CHRISTMAS SPECIAL TIME. Today’s installment looks at “The Next
Doctor”.
This Doctor Who Christmas special
deposits the Doctor in a Victorian Era Christmas. There’s even a proper snow
this time.
This story is perfectly Dickensian with missing children and gruesome murders against a background of Victorian London at Christmas time.
Granted, Charles Dickens never had to contend with Cybermen.
David Morrisey is fascinating to watch as the man who thinks he's the Doctor and his dark descent as this facade is stripped away bit by bit to reveal a man brought low by horror and tragedy.

And before we go, here is today’s Christmas
Comic Book Story!!!!
Since we started off today's post with a movie recap where Santa Claus has to DIE, today's Martian Manhunter yuletide tale begins with.... MURDER!

Well, that is that for today’s
Countdown to Christmas.
The countdown continues tomorrow
with another movie, another weird song, more Doctor Who and another comic book
story!
Happy holidays and remember to be
good to one another.
