SpongeBob LIVES!

On September 16, 2018,  SpongeBob SquarePants said farewell to Broadway.

It was the end of a 9 month run at the Palace Theater for the SpongeBob SquarePants Musical. The Palace was due for a multiyear renovation and the underesea gang of Bikini Bottom no longer had a home on the Great White Way.

Ethan Slater who played SpongeBob on stage thought it was the end.

But not quite.

A few weeks ago, Ethan Slater and other members from the original Broadway cast were back on stage one more time to film a production of the show which aired on December 7, 2019 on Nickelodeon.

Andrea and I waited until our daughter Randie was back home from college for the winter break to watch the special which we did Friday night.

The SpongeBob SquarePants Musical is a very entertaining show told with boundless energy on a stage set teaming with color and life.

As befitting the anarchic nature of the animated show, the musical is not above being metacontextual and calling attention to its own staged artifice. SpongeBob and the cast frequently interact with the conductor and the foley artist. In the TV production, as SpongeBob is saying hello to everyone in Bikini Bottom in the opening number, Ethan leans right into the camera to say, "Hello everyone at home!"

The songs are written by a variety of contributors such as David Bowie, Cyndi Lauper, Sara Bareilles, Jonathan Coulton, John Legend, Steve Tyler, They Might Be Giants, Lady Antebellum and The Flaming Lips. That might seem like a hodge podge recipe for confusion but the soundtrack comes together organically to further the narrative.

My only regret watching this show was that I would love to actually be present in the theater at a live performance. The energy of the show would be something wonderful to experience in person.

The SpongeBob SquarePants Musical is a very entertaining time of near boundless joy.

Below is a link to a clip of the opening number, Bikini Bottom Day.
