Across much of the United States, winter weather has been striking hard with bitter cold temperatures, ice and snow.
Except here in my little corner of North Carolina in the area of my humble abode, the Fortress of Ineptitude.
At least until this weekend.
Come Saturday morning, a sheath of ice adorned everything. It was a crystal tableau of exquisite beauty. It was also a slippery tableau of potential danger. My daughter Randie was able to safely navigate her way to her job Saturday morning only to learn upon arrival that she didn't need to come in.
Meanwhile, my wife Andrea was supposed work Saturday morning as well. Since she works from home, slippery roads were not an impediment to her work.
Power outages? Well, that's different.
The Fortress of Ineptitude was bereft of electricity Saturday morning.
We bundled up in layers (including Rosie in her dog sweater) and huddled together on the sofa under blankets prepared to accept our cold and powerless fate. We were actually quite comfortable and fairly content when the Fortress of Ineptitude hummed to life.
We were quite fortunate. Throughout Sunday, many homes and businesses were still without power.
Falling trees were a particular hazard. I watched as our neighbor across the street had a particularly tall pine tree come crashing down, narrowly missing their home but taking out part of their fence.
Our neighbors next door lost a tree in their front yard. They are ever so efficient and the tree was already chopped up and ready to be carted away by Sunday afternoon.
So far this winter, we have not had a major snow event. We've had a couple of dustings of snow that have gone away within hours.
Which is for the best because my area of North Carolina is not prepared to deal with much beyond a dusting of snow.
