Superman Would Not Approve

Back in the 1990's, Andrea and I liked to watch Lois & Clark: the New Adventures of Superman.  As the title suggests, the emphasis was on the relationship of Lois Lane and Clark Kent, two young reporters for the Metropolis Daily Planet as they investigated stories and solved crimes.

Most of the time, Superman was incidental to the proceedings which helped to lower those special effects costs for 1990's television.

A lot of the show's publicity centered around the sex appeal of Teri Hatcher who played Lois Lane. Such as a naked Lois wrapped up in a Superman cape.

Playing Clark Kent/Superman was Dean Cain. While Cain's Superman lacked gravitas, I found his take on Clark interesting, a mild mannered nebbish who could hold his own without always resorting to the big Red "S".

But let's get real, I was there for Teri Hatcher's Lois Lane with her spirited tenacity, razor sharp zingers and yes, those short skirts.

Hatcher would go on to additional fame as a "Bond Girl" in Die Another Day and also on the nighttime TV soap Desperate Housewives.

Dean Cain on the other hand descended into irrelevance.

He has also descended into right wing extremism.  Cain's main claim to fame these days is appearing on Fox News to decry woke liberalism especially when Superman is involved.

Like when in the comics, Superman's son Jon Kent came out as gay.

Or the recent James Gunn Superman movie which was declared as "woke" because Superman is... kind to people?

In a desparate attempt to get on TV, Dean Cain recently announced he was joining ICE in rounding up illegal immigrants.

Not just supporting ICE but actually working as an ICE agent.

On Last Week TonightJohn Oliver addressed this development in Dean Cain's "career":

“You know, there’s an old saying in Hollywood: “If all you can get is Dean Cain, you are fucked. Now, I’m not saying that ICE isn’t finding people. I’m just saying, when you are reduced to pinning a badge on the 59-year-old star of

  • ‘The Dog Who Saved Christmas,’
  • ‘The Dog Who Saved Christmas Vacation,’
  • ‘The Dog Who Saved the Holidays,’
  • ‘The Dog Who Saved Halloween,’
  • ‘The Dog Who Saved Easter’ and
  • ‘The Dog Who Saved Summer,’

...maybe you are in trouble. Although, on the plus side, no need for that guy to wear a mask because the chances of anyone recognizing him are fucking zero.”

Embedded below is John from this week's Last Week Tonight.

On a personal note, Dean Cain's hateful ignorance has sullied my memories of watching Lois & Clark: the New Adventures of Superman.  The show is on streaming (HBO Max, Tubi) and I've toyed with sampling some episodes of this series I once enjoyed.

But the idea of watching this man who is so antiethical to the ideals of Clark Kent and Superman just makes me sick.
Despite Cain's protests to the contrary, Superman would not approve of his current life choices.
