An Attack On What We All Stand For?

“It's an attack on our country, in a true sense,” Trump declared. “It's an attack on what we all stand for.”

What got Li’l Donnie Trump in a tizzy was the FBI raid of the office and apartment of Michael Cohen, Trump’s lawyer who reportedly out of his own back pocket and the goodness of his heart paid $130,000 to porn star Stormy Daniels whose real name is Stephanie Clifford. I don’t have to look that up; knowing that porn star Stormy Daniels real name is Stephanie Clifford is just one of those pieces of trivia that has now taken up permanent residence inside my brain.

Anyway, back to the FBI raid on Cohen, here’s what went down. Apparently Robert Mueller uncovered so dirt on Michael Cohen that did not exactly connect with Mueller’s Russia probe so Mueller kicked the matter upstairs to his boss, Assistant Attorney General Rod Rosenstein who in turn handed it off to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Manhattan headed by Geoffrey Berman.

A few things about Geoffrey Berman. He was appointed by Trump. Berman was a Trump supporter, actually donating money to Trump’s campaign for the 2016 election.

Geoffrey Berman is a Trump guy.

BUT…..Berman saw something that didn’t look right and took action to check it out.

The seizure of documents belonging to an attorney is a complicated process. Communications between client and attorney are considered privileged and protected. There is a precise and meticulous process that must be followed to authorize such action to seize documents held by a lawyer. It’s called rule of law and it appears that rule of law has been followed in this case.

To avoid compromising privileged/protected attorney/client communications, usually a subpoena would be issued only for relevant documents. The authorization for a raid and a broad based seizure of documents would be invoked if there was an immediate concern that evidence may be disposed of.

And Trump's reaction to all this? The usual ill-tempered, ill-informed petulance.

“This is the most biased group of people, these people have the biggest conflicts of interest I’ve ever seen. Democrats all — or just about all, either Democrats or a couple of Republicans that worked for President Obama. They’re not looking at the other side. They’re not looking at the Hillary Clinton — horrible things that she did and all of the crimes that were committed.”

There is as with most things Li'l Donnie rants about very little that is rooted in any kind of fact.  Robert Mueller, a Republican, was appointed by Rod Rosenstein, a Republican Trump appointee. And as noted above, Geoffrey Berman has some serious bonafides as being a Trump guy.

And as for the crimes of Hillary Clinton, there is nothing there for Li'l Donnie to hang his hair piece on other than the conspiratorial rantings of the alt-right media machine.

As for Trump's assertion that “It's an attack on our country, in a true sense. It's an attack on what we all stand for", let's be blunt and call this for what it really is: Trump sees this as an attack on his power as "Donald Trump" and his perceived selfish view of his authority as President.

While Trump is personally upset by the FBI action against Michael Cohen, it appears that the rule of law was objectively followed in the execution of the raid on Cohen's office and apartment.

In the  U.S. Attorney's Office in Manhattan, Geoffrey Berman acted in pursuit of truth and justice following the rule of law. Geoffrey Berman did not act to serve Donald Trump's self interest.

And that is what pisses off Trump more than anything.

Since this post went live at 11:00 AM EDT, there have been some updates on who did what.  It seems Rod Rosenstein did not refer this to Geoffrey Berman in the  U.S. Attorney's Office in Manhattan. Instead, Rosenstein signed off on the FBI raid himself.  It appears that Berman is recused from the Cohen investigation.

So it changes this sentence to:

Rod Rosenstein acted in pursuit of truth and justice following the rule of law. Rod Rosenstein  did not act to serve Donald Trump's self interest.

But does not change this sentence at all.

And that is what pisses off Trump more than anything.
