Oddball Super Heroes: Night Girl

Hi there! Welcome to I'm So Glad My Suffering Amuses You, your online source for Illudium Q-36 Explosive Space Modulators. I'm Dave-El and I was supposed to hear an Earth shattering ka-boom.

Today is another Wednesday installment of my look at "oddball super heroes". I've been focusing on DC's Legion of Super Heroes. Some of the would-be heroes seeking membership in the Legion are so out there, they don't make the cut.  Many of these rejects find a home with the Legion of Substitute Heroes. But there are some who actually have a pretty strong power set yet are relegated to the Subs. For some, it was a matter of not having control over those powers (like Polar Boy or Infectious Lass).

And then there is the case of Night Girl.

Night Girl  is Lydda Jath, a native of the planet Kathoon. Thanks to science stuff done by her scientist father, Lydda has super strength and decided to try out for the Legion of Super Heroes, mostly to be near her crush, Cosmic Boy.

Now you may wonder why Lydda's super hero name is Night Girl. Well, it's because her home planet of Kathoon is a world of perpetual darkness, heated by an internal power source. And since it's dark all the time, there was no reason to suspect Lydda's pretty gosh darn inconvenient weakness until she came to Earth with it's sun and everything.

Her powers only work at night.

That's right, Lydda Jath has super strength... at night!

Lydda Jath is pretty near indestructible... at night!

Lydda Jath rescues victims of disaster.. at night!

Lydda Jath fights forces of evil... at night!

Yep, Night Girl is pretty darn invincible. Unless you have a flashlight.

So Night Girl comes under the heading of Oddball Super Heroes less for her power and more for her weakness.

Still, Night Girl has comported herself well given that she's powerless over half of the day. Given that very inconvenient weakness, Lydda is well trained in hand to hand combat even without benefit of her powers.  And learning how to work around a power set that is missing for more than half a day at a time has made Lydda an effective trainer at the Legion Academy.

Still, we are talking about a super powered being who can be defeated by a light switch.

Next Wednesday, we look at another Legion Substitute, one who works best in the day time.  And tomorrow is another post on some stuff 'n' junk.

Until then, remember to be good to one another.
