There
are a lot of reasons to disdain Donald Trump’s time as President of the United
States but if I had to pick one thing, it’s Donald Trump’s own disdain for
being President of the United States. As I noted on this blog back in 2017 and
it stills holds true to today, Donald Trump is President only for the part of
the United States that voted for him. If you’re a white gun toting evangelical,
Trump will act like your President.
If
you’re not a white gun toting evangelical, Trump’s attitude is you don’t count.
This
attitude was on display during Trump’s State of the Union on Tuesday. His
remarks put him firmly on the side of his white gun toting evangelical base.
Take,
for example, guns. There are citizens in the United States who are fiercely
concerned about upholding the Second Amendment and not having their rights to
bear arms being abridged. There are also citizens in the United States who are
fiercely concerned about people having their lives abridged by nut cases with guns.
A
President has the responsibility to speak to all citizens. Donald Trump,
instead, picked a side. If you’re a
white gun toting evangelical, you were happy to hear of Trump’s pledge to
defend the rights to have a gun. Nothing
about being protected from a gun.
(This
was enough to prompt an angry outburst from Fred Guttenberg whose daughter was
killed in Parkland two years ago.
Guttenberg was escorted from the gallery by security.)
When
Trump said “remember that America has always been a Christian nation”, the
white gun toting evangelical base stood up and cheered. If you’re an American citizen who is also
Jewish or Muslim or Hindu or Atheist or whatever, well, fuck you. You don’t
count.
If
you’re a white gun toting evangelical, you were probably thrilled when Trump
awarded Rush Limbaugh the presidential Medal of Freedom as if Limbaugh was some
universally beloved national treasure that the whole nation is bummed out to
find has lung cancer. If you’re an American citizen who is part of any demographic
that has been the target of Limbaugh’s insults, attacks and vitriol, that’s OK.
Trump wasn’t thinking of you when Melania draped the medal around Limbaugh’ neck.
Trump’s
speech was the usual mishmash of lies and half-truths that stuff his standard
stump speech from one of his circle jerk rallies. No wonder at the end of it,
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi tore up her copy of the speech into little bits. But
who cares? Neither Pelosi or her constituents are part of Trump’s United States.
For
Donald Trump, President only for the part of the United States that voted for
him, the state of HIS union is strong.

Yep, the Senate voted to acquit Donald Trump on both articles of impeachment.
Wow.
What a shock.
I am surprised.
I am bowled over by that surprise.
I might just keel over dead from that surprise.
OK, is my sarcasm too subtle?
As I've said all along....
"Ain't nothin' gonna happen."
And nothing did.
