Batwoman: The Ruby Rose Exit Strategy

A few weeks back, Ruby Rose announced that she was stepping down from her role on the CW series Batwoman.  The early word was the role of Kate Kane and her Bat suited alter ego would be recast.

The most recent word on the matter is different.

Batwoman showrunner Caroline Dries seems to decry the idea of re-casting Kate Kane as some kind of tired soap opera trope and that the show will be creating a new character to take over the role of Batwoman.

Furthermore, the character of Kate Kane will be killed off at the start of season 2.

Whoa! The producers are swinging for the fences.

I understand the thrill of the challenge of creating a brand new character. "That’s what makes it fun," Dries says.

But fans have spent a whole season following Kate Kane and watching her grow and develop as a person and in her role as Batwoman.  Are the producers going to throw that whole season by asking the viewers to follow someone new?

And what about the familial connections that form the latticework of this show?

Kate Kane is the cousin of Bruce Wayne.

Kate's sister Beth is her arch nemesis Alice.

Kate's step sister Mary is her confidant and part of the Batwoman support team.

Kate's father as head of the crows is a her greatest challenge as Jacob Kane is determined to stop Batwoman.

We're going to bring in some new character who has no connect to Bruce, Alice, Mary or Jacob?

You know, Caroline, replacing an actor in a role is a tricky thing to pull off and it does smack of the worst cliches of day time soap operas.  But I think this is a case where the option to recast is the better option than replacing the character.  Kate Kane's family connections are vital to the world of Batwoman. To replace Kate Kane is to betray a lack of understanding of the show you're in charge of.

Maybe, just maybe Caroline Dries and company are playing at a long fame fake out.  Kate Kane appears to die, Ryan takes over as Batwoman and then after some reconstructive surgery, Kate (with a new face) is revealed as not being dead after all to reclaim the mantle of the Bat.
