Cinema Sunday: Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World

Today, Cinema Sunday looks at a movie made this century for people born in this century.  I watched this movie a couple of weeks ago using a platform created for this century, streaming on Netflix.

Today's spotlight falls on Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, a 2010 film based on the graphic novel series Scott Pilgrim by Bryan Lee O'Malley.

Let's give you a taste of the movie. Here is the opening of the movie including credits.

OK, what a lot of nerd cred in those credits.

  • Captain America, Chris Evans.
  • Captain Marvel, Brie Larson.
  • Superman, Brandon Routh.
  • Future star of Star Trek Picard, Alison Pill.
  • Aubrey Plaza from Parks and Recreation.
  • Michael Cera from Arrested Development.

Michael Cera is Scott Pilgrim, a 22 year old bassist in a floundering Toronto based garage band called Sex Bob-Omb. Scott is dating Knives Chau, a 17-year-old high-school student. It's a nice safe chaste relationship since Scott is still in a funk over the break up with his ex, "Envy" Adams, who has her own band.

Then Scott meets Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead).

Scott falls crazy head over heels in love with Ramona.

Without breaking up with Knives first. Yes, that will cause complications.

If Scott wants to date Ramona, he will have to defeat her 7 evil ex-boyfriends.

Or as Ramona corrects him, her 7 evil exes.

Yes, not all the exes are boyfriends.

OK, what happens over the course of this movie defies easy summation so I won't.

Suffice to say there are kung fu slugfests, Battles of the Bands and video game fights and the course of true love does not run smooth.

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is a crazy mishmash of styles and effects. It is by turns funny, sad and weird and sometimes it's funny, sad and weird at the same time.

I had a lot of fun watching Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Yes, it's a weird little movie but hey, I like weird.
