But lately, people are massing in the streets of Hong Kong to protest against attempted incursions by China into Hong Kong’s autonomy.
Does Donald Trump understand what's going on? He posted this on Twitter.
“Our Intelligence has informed us that the Chinese Government
is moving troops to the Border with Hong Kong. Everyone should be calm and
safe!”
I'm going to go with "no, he does not understand".
I'm not sure that pro-democracy demonstrators in Hong Kong should feel "calm and safe" from the knowledge that "the Chinese Government is moving troops to the Border with Hong Kong."
One might make the case that Trump's tweet is admonishing that all parties involved should just cool it.
But given Trump's predilection for autocrats and his own desperate need to make nice with the Chinese government to make a trade deal, it's not hard to see "Everyone should be calm and safe!" has a comment directed to the pro-democracy demonstrators in Hong Kong to cool it because China has an army aimed at them.
In short, is Trump doing China's work for them?
Who cares about democracy and freedom when there's a trade deal on the line?
