Lois Lane Vs. Racism

Hi there and welcome to I'm so Glad My Suffering Amuses You and today marks the conclusion of our series of special posts, Lois Lane Versus.

Today's installment, Lois Lane Vs. Racism!

Lois Lane wants to do a story on the Little Africa community in Metropolis. She thinks it's a prime gig to get a Pulitzer Prize for "telling it like it is".

So she heads off to Little Africa and finds that none of the black people who live there want to talk to a white person. There is a LOT of distrust.

So Lois hits up Superman for a favor to use a Kryptonian machine to make herself appear African-American.

Under the guise of a black woman, Lois makes another foray into Little Africa and find out black women have to put up with a lot of shit.

Lois' new look gets people in Little Africa to open up to her and Lois gets some profound insights into what its like to be person with brown skin.

She does make a misguided effort to call out Superman for racism for not wanting to marry her now that she is a black woman. Superman calls her out on her bullshit with his usual bullshit about not wanting to put her in danger blah blah blah.

This story is heavy handed and cheesy. Writer Robert Kanigher was an old, white guy whose heart may have been in the right place but there are some parts that are cringe worthy.

One rather odd thing was the title:  "I Am Curious (Black)!"  When this comic came out, there was a rather famous porn film out called  "I Am Curious (Yellow)!" It is a very strange thing for a comic book to reference.

And that is that for Lois Lane Versus. Thank you for indulging this nonsense. I'll be back tomorrow with... something.

Until next time, remember to be good to one another.
