To Iranian President Rouhani: NEVER, EVER THREATEN THE UNITED STATES AGAIN OR YOU WILL SUFFER CONSEQUENCES THE LIKES OF WHICH FEW THROUGHOUT HISTORY HAVE EVER SUFFERED BEFORE. WE ARE NO LONGER A COUNTRY THAT WILL STAND FOR YOUR DEMENTED WORDS OF VIOLENCE & DEATH. BE CAUTIOUS!

OK, what prompted that? Rouhani said this during a gathering with diplomats on Sunday:  “America should know that peace with Iran is the mother of all peace, and war with Iran is the mother of all wars. You are not in a position to incite the Iranian nation against Iran’s security and interests.”

White House press secretary Sarah Succubus Sanders on Monday reiterated Trump’s warning to Iran, telling Fox News that “if needed, and steps are required, this president is not afraid to take them. He’s certainly not going to tolerate the leader of Iran making threats against Americans, making threats against this country, making threats against Israel. This is a president who is going to stand up and make sure he is doing what is necessary.”

To be fair, as I write this, I’ve not yet seen every single word Iranian President Rouhani said to those diplomats but in what I am seeing:

“America should know that peace with Iran is the mother of all peace, and war with Iran is the mother of all wars. You are not in a position to incite the Iranian nation against Iran’s security and interests.”

I’m really not finding “threats against Americans, making threats against this country, making threats against Israel.” Maybe that’s buried in the rest of the Rouhani’s speech transcript. 

It looks like standard posturing from Iran’s President that’s more along the lines of a warning to “stay out of our shit”. 

The response from Trump with  NEVER, EVER THREATEN THE UNITED STATES AGAIN OR YOU WILL SUFFER CONSEQUENCES BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH seems a trifle out of proportion to the offending statement.

Of course, never forget who Trump is always talking to. He’s throwing red meat to his base, trying to look tough.  

Well, we shouldn’t worry too much, right? I’m sure our diplomats will smooth things over. Speaking of which, let’s take a look at U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. As head of our diplomatic corps, I’m sure Pompeo will have something to say to maintain some balance between the United States and Iran. 

Lay some diplomacy on us, Mike!

“Iran is run by something that resembles the Mafia more than a government. Rouhani and Foreign Minister Javad Zarif are merely polished front men for the ayatollahs’ international con artistry and wolves in sheep’s clothing  with a radical, anti-western agenda.  These hypocritical holy men have devised all kinds of crooked schemes to become some of the wealthiest men on Earth while their people suffer.” 

Yeah, real smooth work there, Mikey!

Look, I’m not saying Pompeo’s assessment of Iran’s leadership is incorrect. The ayatollahs of Iran have held in Iran in a tight grip for decades in pursuit of a fervent anti-Western ideology while consolidating wealth and power in their hands.  

But that’s hardly the diplomatic approach one should expect from the U.S. Secretary of State.  Of course,  it warrants remembering that Trump picked Mike Pompeo to be U.S. Secretary of State because Pompeo was of a like mind with Trump regards to Iran.

Anyway, another day with Trump doing stupid shit.
